Hyundai ix35 vs. VW Tiguan | drive it!

With just under 35,000 units sold between January and September of 2011, the VW Tiguan was the most popular SUV in Germany. The facelift performed in Wolfsburg this year gave it an even more quintessential Volkswagen look: unspectacular perhaps, but certainly popular.During the same period, rival Hyundai sold around 9,000 of its ix35s. It was launched at the beginning of 2011 as a successor to the Tucson, and has a much more European look than its predecessor. We took the two rivals out to see how they matched up.

It is funny how people try to compare cars made with plastic,terrible handling and mediocre flashy design to Volkswagen. Other than its price the Hyundai has nothing over the Tiguan,. The Tiguan has a more powerful engine with higher torque more cargo capacity and higher towing ability since after all its an SUV ,alongside solid quality and built interior and lets not forgot that the Tiguans design from the outside is pure class.

The biggest compliment for Tucson is that it is being compared with TIGUAN. Otherwise this VW baby SUV is often compared with BMWs and Mercs. Well done Hyundai!

I did a similar comparison when I bought my Hyundai ix20. the Golf Plus was a better car but much more expensive than the ix20 which also had a 5 year warranty so I chose the better value Hyundai.

The 3 year Consumer Reports rankings in the US, show the Hyundai is far more reliable than VW which is almost next to last when it comes to dependability. VW's don't age well, unfortunately.

people need to grow up yes the Hyundai is good looking,yes it has a good engine,yes it has great fuel economy BUT its interior is very cheap compared to the Tiguan,all plastic,the Tiguan is more elegant,more sporty,do not try to compare Japanese/Korean to German cars i am very sorry,just try the seats alone and you will see the difference, VW/Audi/Porshe give you luxury and elegance on the inside out not plastic cheap stuff,i am not saying that Hyundai is bad but it does not compare to German.

i understand its designed for light offroading. but i live in the country and we have snow, my friend has i35 and he get stuck all the time on his way to university. while the Tiguan works fine on snow and is more solid on the road. The engines of Tiguan are far better 2.0T 200HP while the i35 is 2.0 165HP, Hyundai has slightly better fuel economy that's it for me

That's harsh! I think fuel-economy and giving more power for the engine is a reasonably justified compromise. We can all admit that VW has better craftsmanship, and that IS important. However, Hyundai still wins in terms of design. Yes, it is made out of cheaper plastic material for the interior, but it is by no means 'fragile' or unreliable. I like the Tiguan better, but you're being waaaaay too harsh on the Hyundai. ix35 is a GOOD effort by the Koreans.

I may agree on the cheapest interior of the hyundai, after all it is a cheaper car. As far as being handiccaped offroad, I think you should understand that this car are meant for a slight offroad, and a Tiguan or a Hyundai are exactly on the same level. Safety they both have 5 stars so you have no clue of what you are talking about. Same for power, there are many gasoline / diesel version with similar level of torque and bhp.

Volks Workmanship. See, makers of the Tiguan sees the car as a very valuable gift to the owners - workmanship uncompromised, quality at its finest. You are gettng something good. But the Hyundai, sees the car as a shit that they can earn A LOT OF MONEY by sacrificing quality of materials and built. lessening the price so people can go scrambling for it. dressing up a shit in to something acceptable doesn't make a any difference from the shit what it is made of. That's a Hyundai car.

I must admit the Hyundai is more powerful have had it for 3months. no doubt the design is flawless, but the tiguan is much better. VW is the best. Hyundai can't keep up with the Euro's.

How can you compare a SUV made by VW with a mediocre car like Hyundai IX35? There is no way of comparison... the Hyundai is full of ugly and cheap plastic, has an awful interior design, the engine offer is 10x lower than VW, there is no way of comparison. Tiguan is better at every single chapter... And if you evoke the price... well, this is the law of nature. You pay more, you receive more. Now it depends on consumer, but let's be honest, people who are buying a Hyundai aren't same people with those buying a german car (except for Opel).

If you drive ix35, you will be very embarrassed with your ignorant statement. My family owns three vw cars, Tiguan, Polo and Golf. All of them had major airbag and engine problems. Tucson cannot compare to Tiguan who is in the level of Audi Q3 Q5 BMW X1 X3 etc... its in the lux league. Tucson is against Kia Sportage,Nissan Quachquai etc...

i don't want to pay my money on a cheap plastic interior, uncomfortable seats,weak engines and torque,limited technology, and a Crossover who is handicapped on snow and has a horrible awd system for off-road, also some people care about safety and the VW always have some of the highest ratings.
