My Hyundai Santa Cruz truck 6 month owner's update review including a few problems I've encountered before hitting 4,000 miles on the odometer.
UPDATE: For those of you thinking I was making the person behind me wait to use the car wash (I got several comments accusing me of that), go back and watch. They were vacuuming their vehicle at the vacuum station. There were at least 2 other bays wide open, so they were not waiting on me. That's not in my nature to be that selfish. The cameras were already in place in a good spot so I took the few minutes to wipe the truck down with no one behind me waiting.

I'm an interstate driver (70-75mph typically). Just got 396 miles on 15.4 gallons. I definitely don't recommend driving that low on fuel - I usually fill up at 330-350 miles - but I wanted to see the max mileage I could get. I drive 100-140 miles per day and see between 25 and 29 mpg depending on how aggressive I'm driving. Just turned 4000 miles after 5 weeks. If you're truly only seeing 19 mpg, I'd get it to the shop though. As always, great video and looking forward to more!

I believe smart mode adjusts to your driving style and will adjust between normal and sport depending on how you are driving. My first 2 tanks of gas I was struggling to get 19 mpg in mixed driving and it has since improved to 23 mpg as the motor starts to break in. I also have the 2.5 turbo. I’m really enjoying it!

I took one of these for a test drive today. The 4 cylinder turbo AWD model. My wife loves the way it looks. Fair enough, we go check it out. Man I was blown away with the power this thing puts out. Now I’m a Ford pick up guy, I own a 2014 Ford Tremor. It’s a fast truck. This damn thing threw me back into my seat on normal mode let alone the sport mode. I’ll watch your other vids cuz if I’m going to pay $37k for this thing (less with her current car trade in value) I want to know everything. So glad I found you. Oh, and my truck gas mileage meter whatever the hell it’s called is all over the place. Those things don’t work for crap in my opinion.

My Santa Cruz SEL has the Adventure package, 2.5 Hytrak. Don’t have 1000 miles yet. Hope it will get even better. Only thing I can think of is do the math yourself. Hey Terr! Love your Blue Iguana reviews. In fact , your gushing endorsement pushed me into a test drive. Now I’m on the lookout for a Limited myself! I think your issues thus far are very common, and/or easily explained. I’d like to see what your trip computer is giving you for AVERAGE MPG. And like other posters have said, you can do your own math between fill-ups at the same pump. Cold weather affected your tire psi. When they’re all up or down together like that, the ambient temperature is to blame. If it’s only one, you’ve got bigger problems. Rusting rotors is normal due to their raw steel construction. Especially with that coastal salt-air you have. If the dealer consents to a free good faith replacement under warranty, (which would be a miracle on a “consumable” part), they’re probably just going to use the same ones you already have. Consider upgrading to a painted aftermarket rotor, like the ones they sell at Advanced Auto or Autozone if it bothers you that much. The dealer won’t touch non OEM parts though, so an independent shop is your other option. And for the interior dust, I plan on keeping a microfiber cloth or a mini Swiffer in the console. Smooth and shiny is a PITA for keeping clean. How do you like the Bose system? I have yet to hear it. My test drive didn’t have it. Keep the reviews coming. Onward and Upward my dude!
@BarefootVlogger
@BarefootVlogger 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, PbH excellent input and feedback thanks so much. Yeah, I should've realized the psi was cold weather related lol I can laugh about it now; but tbh never had that happen before through all the cold snaps down here. I've also never seen rust on rotors this quickly and badly. Some parts are definitely better constructed than others. I think the Bose system is pretty decent, but that's about it. Some people I've heard think it's garbage. I wouldn't go that far but honestly for the name you'd expect it to have more kick and less distortion. I'll keep you posted and thanks for sharing about your test drive!

I bought a Premium model and I love it. The dust you are correct about, I think the mpg is consistent on mine and works out about right, and from what I’ve seen the Premium trim is better than the Limited. Mine is in Blue Stone also. If the car is running and you get out with the fob in your pocket it beeps. It does get looks and comments, you’re rusting because of salt air.

Smart mode if I remember correctly from my Santa Fe is a mixture of both eco & sport. It will put you into eco mode when driving normally but if you need to floor it for whatever reason like changing lanes it will turn on that sport mode. The door sound when closing is due to leaving the car on but getting out with the key in your pockets. Believe its an alert to tell you vehicle is still on.

In regards to the instantaneous gas mileage value, I've found on many cars for them to never be even close to accurate, especially as an instantaneous value. I was under the impression that most people just reset their trip meter whenever they fill up with gas, and on the next fill up, just divide the # of miles on the trip meter by the # of gallons you just filled up. I'd be curious if you were to try that to see what values you were getting.

Also have Santa Cruz Limited. The chime is a setting in the vehicle setting menu that you can enable and disable. Also the MPG is a setting as well. You can set it to read average mpg per trip, per fill up or manually when you reset it. The reading you see should show 3 things depending on how your is set in settings. The blue bar will have a tick on it, that is your graphical display of average mpg best on the scale. The moving blue bar indicates your instant readout of mpg based on the vehicle at that moment. And lastly the number on the right side is your “average MPG based on your settings (I believe from the factory it comes set to reset at fill up). This explains the condition you showed of idle mpg going down (engine is using gas but car isn’t moving so your mpg at idle is zero and the instance of better gas mileage being averaged when you speed up (car is traveling a maximum distance per fuel consumption). Love your videos!

Hey T, from what I understand rotors rust when the car is kept outside and gets rained on. I don’t think it’s a problem that they will replace. And for the mileage, fill the truck with gas and see how many miles you get on the tank divide the miles by the number of gallons and then you can see the actual mileage. This is the way we used to do it before they put these gages on the dash. I hope you get the mileage you are expecting and then get them to fix the gage. Those instrument gauges for mpg tend not to be super accurate because of how they get the info. Instead of doing the actual mileage/fuel used, the gauge is using the sensors in the exhaust to measure what it is burning and calculates it from that. Please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but those are the sensors that are used to adjust the fuel air mixture to run as efficiently as possible. The only way you can truly know your mpg is to do the actual math. The gauge is an estimate.

Did have a big temperature difference there? My tires due that due to the crazy temperature swings in MN. Maybe the rims are aluminum, which makes a bad seal. Rust on the brake disk. Love your videos, Dude! I'm debating between the Santa Cruz and Maverick (just like most people! lol). I LOVE the exterior look of the SC, but I'm not fond of the glossy, dust attracting interior. The Maverick's look is "bla" compared to the SC, but the gas mileage is what's attracting me. But that useless little cubby next to the stereo (in the Mav) really bugs me! lol Oh decisions decisions! Oh hey, did you get the brake rust issue looked at? Any updates?
@BarefootVlogger

Thanks so much Andrew!! They wouldn't do anything about the rust because they said it's not covered. I know brakes rust on a lot of vehicles but for me that just says they're not doing what's necessary to prevent it. My other vehicle is older and zero rust. You're right about the mileage, it's no contest and with prices today that's definitely a factor. But that said I love the power I get in my 300 hp engine so I'm ok with it.

It’s because your not allowing the truck to shift in to higher gears and that’s why your not seeing the MPG you want. Accelerate fast to your desired speed and let off the gas to maintain the speed and watch your MPH will go up.

It's because you're in lower gears when you're stepping on it after your up to speed, you're in higher gears so your engine rpm drops so your average mpg go up. that's what I think, I may be wrong just my thoughts.

SO LOOKING FORWARD to the UPDATE on that rust situation....I’ve subscribed just for that purpose..I was totally interested in this vehicle at first until the price was finally disclosed ( I would have bought nothing but the limited ) there’s been NOTHING else I’ve been interested in since Ram keeps procrastinating about the new Dakota.... that’s been my 1st choice...only if it’s similar to the Ram not the Ridgeline. I haven’t seen NOT ONE of these here in Detroit or surrounding area AT ALL now since my 05 Dakota is rusting something terrible ( wheel wells ) Now this is on my radar again ... But NOW I’m seeing USED ones on line I’m thinking that could be the move to make providing there would be a discount realized at purchase.

Thanks Bruce, I took the Santa Cruz in and tried to get them to remove the rust and rustproof but they told me it's not part of the warranty because it didn't affect the discs only the rotors which are not covered. I still feel that aside from that and a few other nuisance type things, it's a great vehicle that I enjoy driving. If you can get a used one that's a score as long as the price comes down because last I checked used cars were almost as much as new ones. That may have changed by now. Anyway keep me posted on what you end up with and best of luck my friend!

I have a new Kia Forte, I manually check the gas mileage on each of the (only) 3 times I've filled it. The car calculated that my average MPG was 36 for the 350 miles since my last fill, I manually checked it and the actual mileage was 34.7, which appears accurate enough for me. I also notice that if you are sitting at idle, the active guage gets worse and worse because you aren't moving! Makes perfect sense that the vehicle's mileage computer is going to tell you that! It is measuring in real time!

I forgot to add, all metal rusts if it exposed to the air or water and things like salts, and acids make the metal oxidize or Rust faster. Granulated pressed metal components rust even faster. The brakes need to dissipate heat and the point of contact between the brake pad and rotor need to be clean and bare for proper friction to develope so you Can't paint them or oil them or coat them with anything to prevent rust. You can paint the now rusty places of the rotor but that will trap heat. Sorry it is what it is. 🤷

Am I first here? 🤩 I am surprised to see the MPG in the Blue Iguana. I have the 2017 Hybrid Highlander. The only times I got the advertised Hwy 28 MPG was with no passenger or any payload at 50 F at sea level going 50 miles per hour on cruise control. I don’t think I ever got the City 30 mpg. I stopped looking after first 6 months. It’s still a lot better than the gas version of this car I used to own. I fill up about every 3 to 4 weeks. I only drive only about 500 miles a month these days. If I drove more than that, I think it would bother me more. I honestly want one however I live up in the Northeast and we get a lot of snow. if your brakes are rusting and you’re down in Florida I can’t imagine what our snow up here in New York would do to it. PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE GOING TO YOUR DEALER! Hey Buddy. I have worked at a national auto parts chain for over 12 years ( who's name I probably shouldn't mention here, but their initials are N.A.P.A. ) and have been involved in the automotive business for over thirty. Rust residue is a product of two things. First, brake rotors are of cast steel. Raw steel will "flash rust" when exposed to moisture, ask any collision repair guy painting a car. Second, are the type of brake pads. I don't know if Hyundai uses "semi - metallic" or "ceramic" brake pads from the factory, but semi - metallic pads can aggravate the situation. Regardless, IT IS NORMAL. However, there are ways to minimize the problem. Several retailers ( including mine ) sell a premium type of brake rotor that are coated with a special high temperature coating to prevent rusting on the non - wearing surfaces as well as "ceramic" brake pads that greatly reduce the amount of brake dust on your pretty aluminum wheels. What the dealer will tell you is, that IT IS NORMAL. If you want to do a 4 wheel brake job at 4000 miles is your decision.

1. It's NOT your mileage that's the problem: you've got a faulty guage...should be a no-brainer for your dealership: they should replace it free (as your vehicle is fairly new). They should take issue with the vehicle manfacturer if lots of customers are reporting similar guage issues. 2. There are anti-static sprays available in aerosol... so if you spray it when it is clean you may find that dust doesn't cling much.
@uni4rm

One of the first criticisms everyone had with the SC when it came out was the glossy dash finish. It makes dust look a million times worse than it really is. You'd think automakers would have learned after trying to put glossy plastic wood trim finishes in cars and everyone hating that.

Thanks for the review. I'm sure that some of the video is for the sake of style, but the whole MPG thing, all you had to do was run 1 or 2 tanks, noting the miles driven between filling and you could calculate the MPG, compare that to what you were seeing. It would have been a 1 minute segment at most. I agree, it seems like something is incorrect in the system. As for the rust, yes, if this is rusting, what else might rust? I live where it snows and they salt the roads.... you REALLY don't want a rust problem or your vehicle is toast.

I've researched the Santa Cruz for a while. Unfortunately with the supply issues, I've never been able to see one in person just yet. Just from the little research I've done, I'm wondering if you can comment on some concerns I have. First, every pickup I've had has had a power sliding rear window. I'd open the sunroof and the rear window, and have wind blow through the cabin front to back which i find really nice. Without a power rear sliding window, I'd have to open the side windows which creates this vortex inside the cabin, which if you have dogs, prepare to have a face full of fur afterwards. Second, the in bed storage is nice, and i appreciate it with my honda ridgeline, but it makes a lot of sense for honda to offer a dual opening tailgate in order to access that space easier. Third, the already limited space in the bed is made more limited with the tonneau cover. I've heard that's its really difficult to remove the cover if you wanted to recapture that foot of space the cover and internal cannister take up. Any of these issues make you feel like you should have gone with another vehicle or do you feel like the pros outweigh the cons? I appreciate your content!

Thanks M great questions and concerns. Regarding the vacuum affect if opening the rear slider and windows yes definitely noticed that while driving but I still like doing it now and then for the circulation. Regarding the tonneau its a give and take. It does cut down on the already small room back there but for me too ts a must. I gotta have the tonneau moreso than extra room. If you need a truck this probably aint it. But if youre considering an SUV I think this is a great option. Hope this helps and thanks!

Terry, you're killing me here----I've got a blue one on order!! The instant gas mileage gauge starts all over again at 0 when you add or fill up your tank again. Check it again when you're closer to empty. The only way to be accurate is 'fill, drive, fill' & divide the driven miles into the gallons added. Rotors are cast iron---everyone's will rust unless you custom paint them. As far as the actual wear surface---that can have overnight surface rust on it if parked after driving in the rain---heck, even a heavy dew overnight can do it. First time you use them--it's gone. Modern wheels have more open area to see through. For the dash dust-- a lint free rag with some anti-static spray on it does the trick. Tire inflation?----seems like you guys just went through a cold spell down there----cold air contracts and lowers pressure. Take my word for it---I'm from Minnesota :) Pat

This episode came back. Have you resolved your MPG issue? From what you described you milage gauge is working. Lots of stop and go will indicate low MPG your trip to the Keys was a long drive at a moderate speed and few stops and will increase your MPG substantially. The real measure is to fill it up drive over 100 miles re-fill the gas get the real miles driven since last fill and now calculate by dividing the re-fill gallons into miles. I drive a Rouge SUV and my gauge is the same way. Just an FYI. Not sure about the rust on the brakes but your Lexus could have the better ceramic rotors...just a guess there.

I thought it was because I left the engine running after getting out of the car lol. You're probably right about highway driving but I've been on 95 and it's barely hitting 20. I'm ok with that but low teens is pretty low. Thanks Elaine!

@@BarefootVlogger you’re probably right about that too. The car doesn’t want you to leave the keys in it while it’s running :) I wouldn’t be surprised if your mileage gets better though. It got way better for me after the long drive to FL, otherwise, I wonder how long it would’ve actually taken. I just hit 11,000 miles on my car.

Ok I'm only just hitting 4,000. Usually takes 5k to break in the engine anyway so hopefully it'll start getting better soon.

The brake discs are cast iron. This is the case in most production cars. It is great for durability and heat dissipation. It rusts.

SC SEL owner here, seems like a faulty computer error or maybe even need to have sensors recalibrated. I usually go by total mileage per fillups but typically I will be getting 20-25mpg in the city for commutes . I’ve heard that driving it on normal mode is better for commutes and city driving. Smart mode for road trips. I’m not too fond of the sluggish gears on smart mode, I prefer smooth shifting and smoother handling.

As far as your tire pressure goes the drastic temperature changes will drastically lower your tire p.s.i. Next your car weights almost 6000 lbs. with a small 4 cylinder engine. That has a lot to do with gas mileage. Plus you have a turbo in there, correct. You have a digital dash board. Humidity and digital don't go well together. That's why some guys prefer the old analog gauges. I like the vehicle very much and it has a cool color. As far as the discs rusting is because there cheap factory brakes. No I wouldn't tolerate that either. Hope you get everything fixed. It seems like a very good truck other then the few mentions.

I'd buy it not matter what. I love it. How many miles do you get out of a full tank? That's all that matter tbh

Saw your title and was worried, But then I watched the video and was relieved at the first world problems you had. Dust, rust on bare metal rotors, low tire pressure - which will reduce mpg

I hear you Keith, no blown engines or transmissions, but the car's got under 4k. Me, I don't like rust on new cars. Not even on rotors. For me that's a problem. I've owned a lot of new cars in my life. Never had rust on any of them. Also, the mpg was just as bad after I reinflated the tires.
