Hyundai Tucson Review: The best family SUV?

I've had the Ultimate HEV for two weeks now. This is truly an awesome car for the money. Comfortable, quick enough when needed, mpg 45-50 if you know how to use the hybrid tech efficiently. Sun roof is fantastic and the whole car feels extremely well put together. So far I'm pushed to find a fault.

Then again the tiguan was designed by VWs famous no effort "meh" design department. At least hyundai takes a risk. The last risk VW took was hoping nobody found their engine emissions cheat system and look how that worked out

I drive one of these and love it! The Hybrid engine is mega and does do around 48 MPG in my hands.

I did choose one over a Volvo, VW and Audi. Objectively it's a great package all round has a fantastic spec, hybrid tech and it looks good too.

Please can you tell me if the rear indicators are at normal height with the main rear light cluster, or are they lower down at bumper level?

Looks like in the UK you got stuck with the short wheelbase version. Other markets get the longer car with much more legroom.

Great review! And great-looking rig. That crease business that runs across the top of the sides adds a bit of welcome drama - and it's hard to do! It'll sell well. Does the job with a lot of style and value, and it won't be a long-term ownership headache, like all the competitors you mentioned. What's not to recommend?

The great thing is that the Tucson does not have a CVT like most Hybrids which makes it more refined when accelerateing.

Just bought the hybrid ultimate. Only had it a few days but very impressed with it. Stays in ev mode quite a lot which is brilliant. Very quiet and comfortable

My sister drove a new Tuscon, lent it to me for a week while I was out west to visit. Impressive vehicle all around - room, comfort, fuel economy, reliable. She was so happy with it when the lease was up she got a new Hyundai Palisade Caligraphy.

Looks great in this colour. Interior looks better quality than recent efforts from VW and I would expect it to be more reliable too. If the 50mpg quoted is genuine too, seems a very strong package.

Is the luggage space in VDA or that other unusable metric? Coz if it’s not then that number is not comparable to the Tiguan since VW use the VDA standard. Saw somewhere the Tucson is 539L VDA which makes it 19L more than a Tiguan as opposed to 100L

Well... I like the car but the n line version does look much more sporty and stylish. It's like the package gives the car a soul and personality. I do especially love it in the unique N-line available only colour -called shadow grey. If you live in the UK ,I would definitely recommend buying N line S version, as you will only miss out on very few features compared to the ultimate model. And yes.. the 1.6 hybrid 230 ps engine is definitely the best engine out of all!! I will do my own review soon, to show you the difference.

Asking people to comment on a comparison with a Tiguan only confirms to me this site is for VW owners, it makes the assumption that everybody must own a Tiguan or at least have fairly in depth knowledge, it must be getting fairly difficult to continue with the VW flag waving.

If you get every single car out there and try to see what has stolen from other cars, you will surely see that everysingle model has common styling points Also the mask is unique not for the shape but for the parametrik lights and the diamond like grill, where do you see this design in a recent or older car out there, nowhere! so you searched diligently because you had to find something that hyundai "stole" from others.. 2015 HR-V has somehow the same v grill mask. Tucson is unique design.. this and 3008 best looking SUV's atm.

In the UK you need the Tuscon Long Wheel Base Model like in the Australia and the USA. -- No big deal. Just a far better proposition.

The LWB is not coming to Europe, and I think it's a good decision. I'm sure Hyundai has done some proper market research before deciding. This SWB would be the better choice for me personally, as I live in a city and don't need all that space at the back.

Don't get the implied comments that some design elements have been stolen from other cars. When you see them on the road they look like nothing else and a coherent design based on their parametric (bent triangles!) styling. Good review though :)

I think the hazard lights are poor. The rear ones are too low and too weak. My other car is a low slung BMW which is over 30 cm lower than the Hyundai. Despite this the BMW hazard lights are 20 cm higher off the road than those on the Tucson. In addition the brightness of the Tucson hazards looks very dim. I wouldn’t like to rely on these to warn other motorists if I was stuck on a dark road at night.

The biggest disappointment with this car is that even the "standard" options wildly vary across regions. For instance in the UAE, only the top trim get the digital drivers' display which is standard pretty much everywhere else. Likewise, the base trim gets an ugly manual aircon and no tech. Shame because Hyundai could've easily turned this into a winner.

No, the model year is country dependent. In some countries where the notion of model year is almost unknown, for example the UK, it's a 2021.

I bought their top-of-the-range Santa Fe brand new in 2013. The best car Hyundai made at that time. I couldn't have specced a better car from them, even spending extra on a bootliner and load cover. It developed faults at six months old that were never fixed, with them acknowledging but failing to fix the faults, then denying the faults existed later on. We're talking engine noise, multiple suspension/chassis rattles and water ingress issues. They may offer a 5 year warranty but don't expect anything fixed that isn't diagnosable within their tight schedules. A shame as I would have stayed with them otherwise. I'd also avoid any servicing plans as I was misadvised and so shafted on that as well.

To call Hyundai "reliable" is a very questionable clame. In my experience the three most unreliable cars I see are Kia/hyundai - their underpinnings are made of chocolate and parts are ferociously expensive. Next is Renault
