Hyundai Veloster - Fix clicking steering wheel

I show how to fix the clicking steering wheel by replacing the steering coupler. This is a common problem with Hyundai/Kia vehicles and a fix that is not difficult. The coupler can be purchased from a variety of places online for about $5. I bought mine on Amazon and it was called a 'APDTY 112837 Flexible Steering Coupler'.

VERY IMPORTANT POINT... Prior to re-inserting 14mm screw, make sure to raise rear of steering column FIRST and carefully insert rear lip of column into square which can be seen after 16:07. You will know when it's properly inserted because the rear will stay up while you're still holding front using steering wheel. Next twist on both 12mm nuts just enough to hold front of steering column. NOW... you can install 14mm screw. It might be necessary to push straight up a little from bottom rear. Tighten 14mm. And FINALLY, you can tighten both 12mm nuts. Sorry, for long comment, but this extra attention will definitely make life better for you. Additional note... There are a total of 5 plug-ins attached to the steering column.

I have 2012 Veloster in automatic, from Germany, and also experience clunking noise in the steering. I bought the coupler, started dismantling the steering column as per your instructions. Following them closely, really helped a lot. So big thanks for your effort making it! Funny enough, I did not have the metal bracket, you show in 5:30. I also did not have to disconnect all the plugged in cables, as only two of them prevented me from lowering the column. The 14mm bolt was a hard ride, as everyone described. I managed to carefully hammer the spanner on it towards the floor, to loosen it. Luckily it gave up and I could easily remove it. Reassembling wasn't that hard, and the column wasn't that heavy as expected. I lied on the floor, with the column on my chest and slowly began to lift it. I didn't realize, there was a special bracket in the back, to which the column is being inserted into - just behind the 14mm bolt. So I had to refit it. Once I inserted the column in the right position, I tightened it with the 2 x 12mm bolts by hand to hang above me securely yet still having some play. Only then I screwed in the 14m back in. Once, all was secured I probably spent most time on the two plastic covers behind the steering wheel, reattaching them together. All in all, it turned out, my coupler was in 95% ok, just slightly worn, (55k miles), yet I replaced it anyways. Unfortunately my clunking is still there, so I am worried about bigger service that will be needed. Probably steering rack is at fault.

This video was an absolute lifesaver! I watched it and decided that I didn't feel comfortable doing the work; but after contacting my local dealership and finding out they wouldn't be able to fit me in for 3 weeks, I changed my mind and committed to tackling it on my own last night. Without your video and step-by-step instructions, I'd probably still be under the steering column right now. It was arduous but definitely doable; and your video made that so much more possible. Ku-friggin-dos! (If you have a means to get it, I'd love to buy you a coffee as a small way to say thanks again!)

Worked like a charm! About 2 hours time from start to finish. A couple of key points: - the 14mm is a beast. I used my long torque wrench to break it loose. - it helps to have someone give you a hand to get the steering wheel back in place. - it’s easier to disconnect the battery *after* you remove the two screws on the steering wheel shroud. Thanks again for the video - saved me $400!!!

I did this repair a couple of years ago. At the time, I could only find videos for the Elantra. The process is almost identical EXCEPT for the placement of that 14mm bolt. I almost gave up and put everything back together, but I finally found the 14mm bolt and managed to drop the column. As others have stated, it DEFINITELY helps to have an extra set of hands to help mount the column back into place. And now my wife's Elantra GT is doing the same thing, so gearing up for round two. Lol.

The difference between the new and the old one was that the old one felt very soft so I changed it for the new one and the noice was reduced dramatically.

Great video. Saved me about $400 in shop repairs. I did have to remove the MOBIS airbag control module in order to get to the 14 mm bolt that’s tucked way the f back there. Since this is my first time loosening that bolt it was nearly impossible to break it by hand since it was factory torqued. Used a rubber mallet and tapped on it for about 2 minutes to gently start to break it. Used good ol’ elbow grease to finally release the bolt. Needed more room and removing the airbag module box was the only way. Good luck everyone.

I'll echo the thanks for your excellent video! It took me longer to clean the gooey old coupling spider remains than it did to either disassemble or reassemble all of the related stuff. (2012 Veloster, manual, naturally aspirated, ~118,800 miles, didn't know cause and had been getting worse for at least 10k miles, no notable damage to coupling halves)

Yes, you need to get the rear of column situated. Start the 2 nuts then just wiggle the column as you thread in the 14mm. It's not bad if you have the steering column adjustment unlocked so you can move it how you need to.

Outstanding presentation. Thank you so much for the effort. Thanks to your video, I just replaced the coupler on our 2014 Turbo. That 14 mm bolt is a beast...both ways. A few suggestions: Schematics of the Veloster steering column are available online. Also, I found it easier to remove and replace the trim behind the steering wheel without the lower trim piece in place. One more thing, after I removed and cleaned out the remains of the old coupler, I confirmed the alignment of the motor and the column assembly before I inserted the new coupler. Once I had them aligned, I inserted the couple about halfway so it would act as a guide as I replace the motor. And I definitely needed my son’s help to lift the steering column back in place.

This is a great video. Another topic for future video would be getting that column back in straight, as it's not straight forward for people that don't do this every day.. For any uninformed comment readers (similar to me): I didn't realize there was a notch to insert at the end of the column next to the 14mm bolt to help realign the 14 mm bolt. It made getting the column in straight easier.

Thanks again. I would like to add a few optional tips; 1. I found it easier to remove the plastic bottom housing prior to the removing the plastic bottom steering wheel housing. Once you get the bigger piece off, the smaller housing come off easier without having to wiggle it off. 2. It made life easier to just pull off the steering wheel after you remove the 2 12mm nuts. This would allow easier access to the 14mm AND the coupler it self. Reinstallation was much easier after I accidently pulled off the steering wheel. Lol

You can do this. Some folks said lifting the steering wheel back into place is easier with a friend’s help. Keep that in mind if you have trouble.

@@Frostcall ended up being a nightmare. I replaced the part and was getting the steering column remounted...got the two front nuts in but when i reinserted the long bolt at the base I did not realize the column was not up into the bracket....i tightened the bolt, and then started to wonder why the base of the column was still not secure.....it was then i realized that from tightening that bolt without the column in the bracket....the bracket bent inward. Now that part of the column will not fit in the bracket....even after bending the bracket back out. Whats worse is the bracket is welded in. It can’t be replaced I imagine without a mechanic gutting out the inside of the car. Not sure what I can do.

@@Frostcall had it towed to a local shop. I hope they can fix the bracket. It was my careless mistake and hopefully someone will read this and not make the mistake I did. Video was great though and I in know way want to take away from that.

Had the same issue with my 2012 Veloster, dealership wanted to charge me $350. Thank God for my extended warranty that paid for it. I think Hyundai needs to recall this issue with the Veloster just like they did with the Sonatas and Elantras

Yeah I asked the dealership for a trade in estimate and they said they'd have to dock $500 for this to be fixed. Fuck that

@@adriancontizano5316 something didn’t get plugged back in all the way. It could be a fuse or one of the plugs. Even if you know you plugged everything back in, unplug and then replug everything just like you were going to do it all again. Also check the fuses. Generally, it’s a plug that isn’t making a good connection.

I am about to get underway doing this repair by myself on my 2013 Veloster. The dealership can't get to it until August 15th, but they are confident this is the issue. I have a feeling I will need to use some solvent (it doesn't feel like there is any of that cushion left); it's probably gunky from Georgia summer heat. I'll make sure I grab some before starting. There were a few repair places that quoted 5 hours of labor and parts to cost between $450-$650. Update: The part and solvent was only $11, plus q-tips and a toothbrush. Mine was shavings and rubber goo as well. I was concerned about the harnesses so I just used little stickers and numbered them to match them up. Possibly an unnecessary step since there weren't many harnesses, but experience with engine and generator changes in the Air Force taught me it's worth a few extra minutes. I am waiting for a guy to come over to help me lift the column back up. I'm not as strong as I was 20 years ago. I underestimated how heavy it would be to get this back into place and bolt it. Finished product! I was finally able to lift it back up myself. I had to take a break to rest my arms and cool off. It took the better part of an hour just cleaning that rubber from the parts. No more clunking, no funky steering, and no play in the steering wheel. Thank you for this video, I can't imagine filming as I did this work! Thank you so much!

I think I underestimated how difficult lifting the steering column would be for a lot of people. I think I’m just used to lifting heavy things with my body in oddly contorted positions, and didn’t consider that not everyone is just like me. I’ll try to be more considerate of others in the future and point out where I think some might struggle. Best wishes!

It’s the metal pieces inside touching and ‘clicking’ as they touch. I’m not sure how long you can go without causing damage. I went about 8 months before I was annoyed enough to change it and I didn’t see any damage.
