Hard to believe we are nearing the 15 year anniversary of the completion of its widening. I lived in the Katy area throughout the duration of the project and drove on it on opening day. I believe it was October 2008.

The reason why sodium vapor is so common is that the brightest wavelength of the light (589 nm, amber-orange) is relatively close to our eyes' "easiest" color to see at 555 nm (lime-green). However, the sodium vapor light mostly produces light at only 589, making it difficult to see other colors, which likely compromises safety while driving. White LEDs emit full-spectrum light which creates near-daytime lighting conditions (which is proven to make driving at night safer and easier). Still, some people do not like white LEDs as white light can be really harsh and blinding if not properly angled.
