I thought there will be future I-422 to bypass north of Birmingham Alabama, but it is unlikely to do it. Ditto with I-222. However, there will be the auxiliary route of I-22 in Mississippi (I-x22) as designated as I-122 in Tupelo Mississippi from I-22 to Shannon Mississippi which shared with US-45 for 30 miles.

Ton of work must've been done to make I-22 to such a standard that no way US-78 ever had. For a state like Alabama, that's quite good looking.

Ya, many leaders in Walker County and elsewhere have talked about how US-78 prior to upgrades was starting to carry extreme tonnage for a road like it, and it was resulting in an increase in wrecks. Remember that US-78, and by extension I-22, organized by the US government to improve the quality of life in regions of the Appalachia, and an interstate from Birmingham to Memphis has been one of their top goals from the beginning

I still remember how when I was a kid and we traveled from Biloxi, MS thru Mobile to north of Nashville to the Cumberland Parkway to visit family where I live now in Somerset, KY that you had to travel thru Birmingham on other highways as I-65 was still incomplete in the metro area. I guess the roads have been built since 1976-81 a bit!...lol

I'm amazed that there is practically nothing from I-65 to Jasper on this highway and all the exits are county roads and no other state routes. I'm sure this will eventually change but it's a long lonely desolate road for the most part which is good for stress-free driving as long as you don't need anythign along the way.
