Follows a route from the McKees Rocks Bridge to just past the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, then back towards downtown and up I-279 a few miles with some colorful skies at dusk.

Thank you, I'd have to admit I have a real soft spot in my heart for Pittsburgh, it is the most interesting city I've seen.

Yes I just moved here and I love it - I was iffy at 1st but its always something different to do here - definitely loving the less traffic factor than Los Angeles...

I remember the sky use to be lit up along 376 from the steel mills. At dusk and at night, the huge, monstrous Jones and Laughlin steel mill was silhouetted against the sky as far as you could see down the Monongahela River going west. It looked so ominous. Every now and then you could see flames shooting up from one of the chimneys. It was awesome. The whole area smelled like sulfur. As kids, we used to hold our noses as we drove by. Now it's all gone.

Absolutely *loved* this video. This, too, is going straight to the favorites. So many interesting things to see, from a road perspective...bridges, flyovers, hills, views of the skyline, and so on. I never did see the McKees Rock Bridge in person, nor did I even know of its existence. Oh yeah, and thanks for mentioning me in the video! The song worked great for this particular video.

So many things have changed since this video, but one thing will never change - when you drive in Pittsburgh you are either going uphill or downhill.

Thank you guys for making Pittsburgh so interesting, especially with this song and with Cate Brothers "Union Man" (a forgotten gem from 1975) in a previous video.

Very nice video.. I used to drive a truck and have been in many of the places you have taped. I recall going through the squirrel hill tunnel and thinking I was going to get stuck. 20 years ago, i279 north of Pittsburgh didn't have very many interchanges and if you made a wrong turn and ended up on that road, you had to travel 10-15 miles before you could turn around

That was an eye opening clip. In all the pictures Ive seen of Pittsburgh, I never would have thought that the city has the topography that it does. I always pictuted Pittsburgh to be flat and not hilly or mountainy like. Pittsburgh looks small too...Looks like I gotta do some research om The Steel City

Oh it's very hilly and rugged, maybe the most of any big city (Metro Population about 2.5 Million) in America....it's a fascinating place, one of my favorite cities to visit. Check out pics of the view from Mt. Washington.

For me, driving on 376 in Pittsburgh feels like the Harlem River/FDR Drive on Manhattan's East Side. Especially when you go westbound and approach the mixing bowl of 376/279/579... it looks and feels like you're either about to enter the Brooklyn Bridge, or you got to go straight for Battery Park and try to make a turnback someplace. That happened to me once trying to get up to Erie from the Oakland section.

Hopefully when both the Mon-Fayette Expressway (PA Turnpike 43) and the Southern Beltway (PA Turnpike 576/Future I-576) is completed that PennDOT reroutes all truck traffic off of I-376 at Squirrel Hill.

They are doing construction along stretches of I-70 between the Turnpike and 79, including new flyover ramps connecting 79 North (from Morgantown) to 70 just east of Washington City. Also seeing construction in pockets on 70 through Washington and Westmoreland counties.

I don't really unbderstand the question, Pittsburghs antiquated road system is interesting but not always easy to get around unless traffic is light, that pretty much goes for any large city.

@TheChamba999 It's more Pittsburgh than anything. Pennsylvania only has a handful of "problem" Interstates: I-376 through Pittsburgh, I-76 through Philadelphia, I-70 between I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and I-83 through Harrisburg. (There is a master plan to upgrade I-83, at least.)

I-70 is in the process now. They are using advanced design techniques at the interchanges featuring many roundabouts and something new called a "diverging diamond" interchange.

Having driven on Pennsylvania highways myself over years, I believe PA's best stretch of road is the I-84 linking 380 in Scranton to the PA/NY/NJ border at Matamoras. All the others... meh.

@danie123182 The federal government said they didn't have enough money to help PennDOT replace the Greenfield Bridge, and instead gave them pocket change to build the "dummy" bridge under it. The Greenfield Bridge is going to be demolished and replaced in December 2014.
@joestewart8914
@joestewart8914 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The new Greenfield Bridge is now competed, the old crumbling bridge with it's unique "debris-catcher" is now gone and the new bridge is a beauty. Right now they are embarking upon a $75 million upgrade to the Highland Park Bridge (not seen in this video).
