I miss Houston so much! I lived off 59 (I-69) at the Weslayan exit for 15 years. Saw a lot of road construction on the freeway through those years.

Great job. All your videos are excellent. It's amazing the amount of concrete poured on freeways in Texas. People who don't live in Texas just don't understand the scope and the scale. It's just stupid the amount of freeways in Dallas and Houston and the Interchanges involved. I think it's even greater than Los Angeles. The high five exchange and Dallas is just ridiculous. Has to be the most concrete poured any place in the world. Other major cities in the US and their freeways don't even come close. Not even the Sunbelt city of Atlanta comes close to Houston or Dallas. I can't believe the amount of construction that's happened over the years. In every direction. All without without a state income tax. Amazing.

Another fantastic video in one of my favorite cities in the world. Makes the freeways here in Kansas City seem like child's play.

I love Houston too! There's nothing like coming out of the trees of I-45 in Conroe, to travel over 100 miles of solid urban freeway. dallas has its moments but it's still not Houston's level.
@plorsomnia8 жыл бұрын
Agreed. When coming down south from Dallas on I-45 it felt like endless wasteland, trees, traffic, and when I was on that road it was raining extremely heavily at night. When we entered the metro it was such a nice welcome to the city with the numerous lights. When we were traveling back north entering the freeway from bissonet street,I took a nap for like 30-40 minutes and could not believe we were still in the metro area when I woke up. Dallas felt like a mini Houston even though it has a bigger metro.

+Wesley Tran if I miss read I'm sorry. But Houston metro is bigger than dfw metro not in population but by land.
@plorsomnia8 жыл бұрын
Houston77x Yes I meant population-wise "bigger". Implied from my post is that Houston has a larger, more appealing freeway system.

I love riding through this freeway! I think the Southwest Freeway is one of the better freeways in the city compared to any part of say, I-45 within Houston.. doesn't beat the Katy Freeway though

I was very impressed, this was my first time on the road. My personal favorite is probably i45 North of bw8, but I love this, I10 and I610 as well.

Parts of that freeway is so wide that it would have been wise to divide the mainline into general-purpose express lanes and collector lanes, like Hwy 401 in Toronto.

Great stuff, JD. All they need to do now in Houston is get the new signage in place inside of Loop 610 on the overheads, the ground, and the side-street approaches. Mile markers are already on the Eastex Freeway, as the mainline I-69 in Texas will actually begin in Victoria. The branches in South Texas will be separate and none of those MMs (and the associate exit numbers) will factor into the mainline.

I have been following the I-69 project for a while now and Houston is one of my favorite sections. I remember staying at the Crowne Plaza right off of Kirby St looking at this giant freeway. Too bad I'm not in Houston a lot. Too bad it looks like it was filmed during rush hour because the section where it crosses I-45 is just breathtaking for me. It sometimes makes me wonder why TXDOT had to make these massive freeways in Houston compared to Dallas where we actually invested more in railroad development and we didn't have to keep adding lanes to US-75. Maybe it's Houston's Zoning rules :/?
@InterstateJD8 жыл бұрын
Houston freeways totally destroyed their Dallas counterparts until very recently imo because of Houston's "freeing the freeways" programs, the more linear grid style, and as you mentioned the lack of zoning. (The NTE, 635, 30, future 35E, and of course 75 will bring Dallas closer to par).Though, as you mentioned, DART .>>>>> Houston metro LRT, both need work. And I'd like to do a big I-69 metro video like I did with I-30 and I-45... eventually. Thanks for watching, would like to see you go to Houston sometime!

They replaced the exit signs with ones with numbers starting with the southern interchange of I-610 and I-69/US 59 and they done so upper north.

Love it! But it's Rosenberg, not Rosenburg at 0:34. Still, minor quibble, not worth worrying about. I also disagree with the "next 20 miles...accomplished neighborhoods", because basically between Beltway 8 and 610, it's pretty run down. A few things that I'm surprised weren't mentioned is that the lanes west of 610 are pretty narrow (too narrow for Interstate standards I believe) AND a lot of the on-ramps were metered ramps. And yes, that is a full-sized neon-trimmed piano mock-up at 3:30.
@InterstateJD8 жыл бұрын
Oops. When I was talking about the "accomplished neighborhoods", I was referring more to Uptown/Galleria, Greenway Plaza, Montrose and further south areas like Rice Village. This was filmed almost 2 years ago so I don't remember all of the details, and I could have sworn 290 was the only freeway with meter ramps... oh well. Glad you enjoyed nonetheless!
@Psuedo3D8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, metered ramps are now gone from 290 (even then there weren't many for years, the only ones that I can remember being there in the years prior to reconstruction was West Road, though there was one at FM 1960 at one time), as well as I-10 pre-reconstruction. Some areas on the North Loop/I-45 have them (not sure when they were used last), but the ones at 59 are still active AFAIK though I've never seen them active in person (they were running as of April 2015 as per Google Maps Street View). Gulf Freeway near Beltway 8 has them too (have seen them running), though I've been told these were actually put in less than 15 years ago.

@bingbong98444 жыл бұрын
Anshul Bellamkonda there are currently no plans to connect the southern portion of I-69 to the midwestern portion of I-69 in KY as a bridge across the Mississippi River from or TN to MO or TN to AR would be almost 10% of the total cost to build the Midwest section. It’s just not needed yet.
