They could also change its exit numbers along I-81 in New York to a mileage based system for 190 miles from Pennsylvania border to Canadian border around 2025. They have done it on I-84, I-99, and I-781 several years ago in New York. I-88 in New York is mentioned of changing its exit numbers to a mileage based system for 117.45 miles from I-81 in Binghamton to I-90 (New York Thruway) near Albany.

Overall it's probably my least preferred area of the country for driving. More toll roads, higher gas, more cramped and congested. But I will say that the highway designs themselves are more interesting from an engineering perspective since they had to fit them in tighter spaces around a lot of the cities. Then of course they do have the NJ Turnpike which is the best designed roadway period in my opinion. In the South and West it feels like you can hop in your car and just go.

It must be aggravating to have to pay a toll for the privilege of driving through the boondocks.... Seriously, tolls should be reserved for busy roads or bridges that are located in densely populated areas. Why would anyone want to pay a toll just to drive to freakin Rochester?
