This is probably repeat info, but consider having 2 of the smaller buckets so that each load of ashes has longer sit-time outside, and also grab a brick or large rock to put on the lids in case of wind. Fires are scary AF...so glad this one was caught in time to not spread out and grow.

Well,.... I can think of one individual who believes everything he does is "perfect", he used to be a president of a large international concern. Rumor has it that he's found himself a bit of trouble with the law lately. But the name doesn't come to mind though. 😄😉😇

No one was hurt, no animals were hurt, and property damage was minimal, no major structures were lost or rendered unusable. As "lessons learned on the homestead" go, this is about as good as it could have been. It's good you shared so others might not make the same mistake. You could have easily never shown it or told your audience. I'm glad you are all safe, and now you now you know what not to do.

Evan, close call. Glad it wasnt worse and not by the animal bank barn. Over the winter, weld up a skid for a 250 gallon IBC tote. Set it up with a gas powered pressure washer or high flow water pump for use as a portable fire suppression system that you can move with one of the tractors. Or put it on a trailer and then you could move it with your pickup truck. For the future compost bin, consider a filled cinderblock design. Or weld one up with the drill pipe. If you decide on wood, maybe try to find used heavy equipment pads that are put down for excavators Glad Rebecca caught it in time!

I feel your pain brother. I had a pile of mushroom compost and late summer I burned crabgrass before it dropped all its seeds. I was sure I pulled all the grass away from the pile. Over the next few days I was smelling something burning, but that is nothing with neighbors all around. Several days later I was out and about and noticed about 1/2 my compost pile was gone. I filled the bucket of my tractor and after several trips I got it put out. So I feel your pain.

I once read a news article about a hunter who walked across a field that a winery was using to dump the grape solids after the squeezing process. As he walked across the field, the ground collapsed beneath him and immediately started cooking his legs. The grape detritus was generating so much heat from the compost process that it was smoldering at extremely high temperatures. He wound up losing both legs below his knees. That story makes me wonder if your compost was already at a temperature to promote combustion in the hay, and an ember from your ashes accelerated the process.

Putting the compost bin away from everything else, so the fire fidn't spread, is domething you did right. Normally we think of compost as damp, but some of the things thst go into one can spontaneously combust under the right conditions. So congratulate yourself on forthought.

Mistakes, and we all make them. Teach us what not to do, and what works and what doesn’t. I am just really thankful and glad the fire was contained to one area, and that no one got injured. And there is some good news, because now you get to relocate the compost pile. You might want to consider a design for making the pile fully accessible on all sides with your loader. Might work better because you would have no expensive sides to build or maintain. Simply place it in an open area away from any buildings. Preferably on a sandy hill to avoid mud. Or if you had an old slab of flat concrete available. This way you could add material to the pile from any side. And have easy access for turning up the pile with your loader from any side. You might have to fence it off to keep the curious animals (chickens) out of it. Plenty of time to think about a plan until spring gets here.😊

You both are very skilled. Never thought I would see a little mistake. I have often thought you might think of making a couple piles 4ft high x 10ftlong. That way you could keep it turned with your tractor .

Evan - everyone makes mistakes. Glad the fire wasn't more serious. You may look back at this as a "blessing in disguise" and your opportunity to get a more functional manure/compost setup. Not sure what you have planned for the relocation but maybe consider just a compost pile with access from all sides with the TYMs rather than boxing it in. I think this would give you more flexibllity with both size (less restrictive) and opportunity to "turn" it more easily. You are a smart man and I'm sure your next setup will serve you well whatever you decide to do. Love your channel and your videos including your transparency when things don't go as planned.

I set the side of our house on fire when I was 11 years old doing the exact same thing you did. In fact, I remember seeing you dump the ashes on the compost pile and remarking to myself that at least you were smart enough to have the compost pile far away from any structures just in case it caught fire. (So, I probably jinxed you!) In my case, it was my job to clean out our wood-burning fireplace one Saturday morning. And we always just dumped the ashes in the metal garbage cans along side our wooden-sided house. Several hours later I was outside playing and I saw the side of our house ablaze! I quickly grabbed the garden hose and was able to put it out before it took the whole house. I recall that the charred wood extended up about 20 feet and was about 10 feet wide. Fortunately, I caught it soon enough and we only had to replace the siding. (I seem to remember getting thanked for my quick thinking more than being scolded for my arsonistic-ash-dumping actions - since we always dumped the ashes there.) After that we placed a special metal garbage can about 20 feet from the house specifically for our fireplace ashes. So, what I'm saying Evan, is that you're in good company!

I did this as well. I put what I thought was cold ashes on the compost pile. At least one was still hot. Twenty minutes later, it was on fire, and the fire had spread to my woodshed. I called the FD and then went out with 2 fire extinguishers and a garden hose. I almost managed to put out my wood splitter, but it was too late. It took the 3 FD's that showed up about 1.5 hours to put out the woodshed with 3.5 cords of seasoned wood inside it out. Total loss. We burned about 1/4 acre of the woods. We managed to recover about a cord of "pre-burned" wood. The charcoal burns for a while, but it's not really satisfactory. So, I bought a new wood splitter, and friends donated about 2 cords of raw firewood. We gathered about 2 more from the woods. I managed to crush my pinky on Christmas day while splitting. Eight stitches later, I'm still recovering. Stuff happens.

6:13 Don't waste your time with a bin. Just find an open spot to pile it up per year for 2 years and take your tractor to turn it. In 2 years you'll have great compost. It will be easy to turn without the walls to fight with. On my sister's farm we never had "bins". She had cattle, sheep, goats, horses and chickens. Beautiful piles of compost.
