here's an idea,put an iron fence above the block you want to mine( the special block ),build all around it with cobblestone (3 blocks high) put a block as the roof between the 3rd block height .now put lava above he iron fence.dig out a hole showing the bottom iron fence,now you should be able to mine the special block,and if a mob spawns,they'll be trapped and slowly killed by the lava,while your stuff is still safe because the iron fence is blocking the lava from your items,but the iron fence is thin so you can still mine the block. edit: change the iron blocks to glass so you can see the mob and the items they drop,also iron fences dont stick to glass blocks so you'll have more room to mine the block
