DP, here is a Vietnam jeep story for you. This is from a neighbor and fellow veteran, a SeaBee, that was part of the caper. Sadly, he died from the effects of Agent Orange over 2 decades ago despite 2 heart transplants. Both happened on Veteran's Day 7 years apart. His SeaBee group was working on a project out in the field. Their CO had his jeep hit a mine. The only thing saved was the Mustang bucket seat. The CO had a bad back and that seat was the only way he felt comfortable in a jeep. My friend and his buddy was at Danang to pick up bridging timbers. The night before leaving Danang for their base, they got loaded at the NCO Club. Staggering back to quarters, they spotted a new jeep at the Officer's Club with a General's flag on it. Yup, they took it. They took the jeep and their 5 ton truck to a back part of the base. They unloaded the bridge timbers and figured a way to drive the jeep into the bed of the 5 ton. Then they reloaded the bridge timbers in such a way the jeep couldn't be seen. They reparked the 5 ton for the convoy. He had no memory of how they pulled that off. The next morning, hungover, they drove the 5 ton out the gate of Danang in convoy while the base was on lock down as the military police were looking everywhere for the missing jeep. Once back at base, the Mustang seat was installed and serial numbers repainted, they presented the new jeep to their CO. I don't think he really dared to ask about the how.

As you were picking up the front l kept thinking, l hope he puts some kind of jack stands under it. I’ve seen y’all work on vehicles with just the air lift holding it up. Anytime you crawl under whatever you’re working on be sure there is something that you can put under it so it cannot fall completely flat on the concrete. I worked for a mechanic when I was just starting out and a car fell off the jack and smashed his head. He lived like a vegetable the rest of his life, just to save a minute.

My grandfather had 3 jeeps 2 1942 models and 1 1944 model. They are in my opinion the best Jeep ever made. As a youngster I learned to drive standard on the ranch in them. The abuse those things could take and the situations you could in to and get out of was just insane. They were also extremely easy to fix. Somebody may have already commented this, but from my experience with older jeeps like that, the wrong handed studs on the wheels, that MBTS was talking about, are true to form. Usually like on a DANA rearend, the left side is left hand threaded and the right-side, right-hand threads. But if it came from Louisiana, where I was born, raised and still live, there ain't no telling what you are going to find on it! sometimes we redrill and tap, because we can't find any other bolts!! Back in the late 70's I was serving on a sub in engineering. A bunch of the other guys had this club that involved those jeeps. On our off time, which was 95 days after a 105 day on schedule, they would take their jeeps to some woods near New London. Then they would play hide and seek, with the jeeps. Skitch, an electrician, would hoist his jeep up into a tree, and laugh as all of the other guys were looking for him. I don't recommend this. But their stories were funny, they often got stuck in the mud, hoping the 5th wheel would get them out. I think your jeep might have belonged to one of them. He was very abusive to his CJ. They got back at Skitch with a honking big capacitor. They asked him what it was and waited till he discovered 500 volts.

This would have been a good episode of your WILL IT START lol . I learned how to drive on the same year jeep as this one. Brought back memories of my dad teaching me. Funny memory was me asking my dad how to stop it, because there were no brakes on it either. So i parked it between 2 small trees with the mirrors. Thanks for those great memories💙

Oh man 😮!! I was cringing when it was getting airborne. Thankfully, no one was under it.
