I got the opportunity to ride the world famous Whole Enchilada trail in Moab, UT. Being my first time on the trail I was nervous to say the least. I wanted to put together a video to share a few things I learned that may help you if you plan to ride it.

I dig all your videos-- but this is your finest yet. I know it is a few years old, but I am just getting around to hitting Moab again (last time was 1996 coming from from Cal) and this will be my first time doing the whole enchilada. So, I just found this one... Easily the best WE breakdown on youtube (after watching what seems like them all, in order to prep). Anyway, brilliant post. Thank you so much for sharing. I've lived in Utah for 20 years now (man that flew by) and there is not a day that goes by where I am not grateful to be here. Especially the days I get to ride! Thanks for killing it. 🤘

Spot on advise bro...rode it last Sept and it's all the above...best riding of my life and what a challenge. Preparing was the hardest part believe it or not and the anticipation is through the roof. We had 8 of us and several mechanical failures but I was unscathed...rode above my comfort level and smiled the whole way throughout. My Ibis HD4 was the bomb and enabled me to do things I only saw on film...Best trail ever!!! Nice job bro!

I'll add in the perspective of a 67 year old man. It's a 55 minute shuttle....PEE before you get on the van! There's no toilet paper at the outhouse at the drop off point. Last week, at 11 o'clock when we got there, the drop off was about 30 degrees cooler than in Moab (which was about 75). I had more warm stuff than I needed, but a flannel shirt, cool weather gloves and a warm skull cap were sufficient. I peeled it all off for a T-shirt and regular gloves, no skull cap by Hazard. I prefer the 10 o'clock shuttle this time of year, as it's a bit warmer and I have time to process my morning coffee. Plus, a hearty meal at the Moab diner (BEWARE - closed Sunday!) lasted me TWE + Jimmy Keen with only a bit of trail mix after Jimmy Keen (which, BTW, adds 6 miles...it's 7.5 miles, but you cut out 1.5 of Kokopelli.). If you're doing TWE for the first time, I'd skip Jimmy Keen, but if you've done it before, it's a worthwhile add on, I think. It begins as a left turn onto single track very shortly after you cross the road onto Kokopelli....like 200 feet. For timing purposes, my riding time for the combo TWE+Jimmy Keen was 3 hours 55 mins (best I can tell, Jimmy Keen adds 30 or 40 minutes and not much climbing), with a total of 4 hours 25 mins, but I've ridden TWE before and already had 5000 pictures from previous rides! The first time will take longer. Pictures, sight seeing and sessioning will add an hour, easily. Oh, and ribs at the Moab Brewery after 5.....I know, off topic, but you have to fuel up for the next day's ride. I think I'm heading back Tuesday or so. Retirement is sweet!

Got a chance to ride the WE two years ago. No trail has been the same since. I have not ridden that many different places, but it is hard to imagine a trail with this much diversity, a locale with this vibe, and scenery this good anywhere else. Quality ride, top to bottom. No section is boring. I have been chomping at the bit to go back since!

Dude, just got done with WE yesterday. Love the video. I wouldn’t say this is a trail for an intermediate rider lol. Im thinking it is more for an advanced rider. consider my self an intermediate rider and I was in hell for the last half of the trail. It was carnage on the way down. There was a total of 5 people with injuries and that’a only what our group saw. 1 person with a broken hip (had to get taken out of there by the ambulance company, 2 with broken wrists, 1 with a dislocated shoulder, and 1 guy ate it on the downhill of Borris pass and cut open his arm.

My first time on the Enchilada I started to energy crash around the same spot you rolled. I learned that it's important to eat before you actually get hungry. If you're waiting to fuel until you hit the crash, it's way too late. On longer rides like that fueling up along the way is as important as drinking water.

This trail IS NOT for intermediate riders. This trail is for expert riders. It's extremely technical and loose after you get to the top of Burro Pass and start the steep decline down. We both crashed hard twice in about one mile after the start of the decent.

Would it be better to take a 120mm hardtail xc bike or a 210mm downhill bike? The downhill bike is a turner dhr and I can tune it to have minimal deflection on the suspension, but it’ll still be a pain climbing, but the xc bike will be hard to descend. Which would be better?
@SingletracksWhiskey
@SingletracksWhiskey 4 жыл бұрын
Hardtail for sure. There’s technical stuff on this trail but nothing DH specific/level. A DH bike on TWE would be awful imo.

I came over from London FIRST ride solo there’s enough people to scrape you up if it goes wrong! SECONDLY you can easily get a shuttle don’t stress THIRDLY keep moving to be air cooled flow like water to save your own! When you get to the end there is a natural spring! FOURTH hire a bike it’s already tuned!! And they give you spares! FIFTH don’t worry about bears they are cows!!! SIX go to the Moab Diner eat breakfast by the time you hit the trail you will fired up!!! SEVEN you won’t be doing the whole trail if snow is on Burro !!!! So go last 2 weeks August first 2 of September! EIGHTH know you bailout routes and ride within your abilities!! It’s all doable!! SMILING IS NOT OPTIONAL THE TRAIL IS 34 MILES OF DOWNHILL FROM 11000 FEET

Your video made me petrified to ride Porcupine Rim, ever since I signed up for a Moab MTB camp. I was loosing sleep over it, and almost bailed out of doing this ride due to your video. But when I finally rode that section where you "almost died", it was nowhere near as sketchy as your video made it out to be. I just stopped and walked it. No big deal. And there were two levels of ledge below where you fell, not an exposed cliff. It looks much worse in the video than it does in real life. So while I liked the rest of your video, I think you are doing other riders a disservice by stressing them out over this section of trail. Maybe it was just me.
