I was in the exact same situation once. A kind of lunatic woman approached me and asked me why I took photos of her while I photographed a church. I changed streets because I already noticed that she was kind of weird, but she followed me and started taking pictures of me with her phone. After getting in an argument and deleting the picture of the church I left while she was still yelling. I think those people look for a chance to get in a fight. And as a street photographer you are the perfect, vulnerable victim. The lesson learned is that it's good to show some teeth like you did. You handled the situation perfectly fine!

This video hits home - I was out shooting here in Omaha and snapped a few pics of a guy who was trying to get his dog back and 15 mins later he charges up to me demanding my camera and when I say "no" he rears back and tries to bash my skull in with a 2 lb solid metal car part. He missed because I ducked but then he went after the part and came at me again. I ducked into a coffee shop and the dude disappeared but I felt stupid for not keeping distance between me and this guy as he charged at me. A few weeks ago I was taking a picture of a building and a lady drove up to me, took my picture with her phone, said she was calling the cops, she took a picture of my truck and drove off. People are real cagey when it comes to photographers making work in public. Be careful out there, everyone! And thanks for sharing your story.

Had a gun pulled on me while I was taking a picture of a hotel neon sign out in Portland. Guy thought I was taking a picture of his car and kept pressing me on it. Thankfully was able to de-escalate the situation by trying to speak calmly and explaining that I was only taking pics of the signs. I had my partner next to me so all I was thinking was how to keep her safe. But you never know with people these days. Glad you were able to walk away from everything relatively safe!

I was out with a Ukrainian rangefinder I had just bought and decided I wanted to be brave. I was on the 6 train in Manhattan and I took a picture of a guy seated right across from me. A lady to my right saw me and started staring at me, then say out loud "this guy is taking pictures of people!". Another woman joined in with her, telling me that I can't do that. The guy across from me is looking at me say "what's going on?" And I said "they are upset because they saw me take a picture of you". And he stands and up starts screaming! "What is wrong with you?! Delete it! Delete the picture." I tried to get him to calm down, but the ladies are yelling for cops, and we are about to pull into the next station. My bravery was all used up. so I said "OK, I'll delete it." And fiddled with the backplate and was like, there its gone. He was still pissed, but I just got off the train. Yeesh! Oh, and I had never used a rangefinder before, so the photo didn't even come out.

Thanks for sharing the tips on how to deal with unseen circumstances when doing street photography. I respect the reflection that you did after that incident and I think it was total normal that you got upset over him when he confronted and I sincerely feel that you handled it well enough, which is by walking away than throwing him a punch. Anyways, nice content as always, God bless you, bro!

Hey this happened in Adelaide Australia.. I took a photo of a woman eating some chips on the street and she came up to me, “show me the photo, you can’t take pictures of people” I told her I was allowed to take photos of people in public and she back handed me across the face really hard. It totally shook me. I walked away stunned and got the cops to go up to her. I could have taken her to court but I decided to just get her to write me an apology. I didn’t do street photography for a while after that and even now I don’t have as much confidence. I’m getting there though, every positive reaction helps me gain my confidence back.

That sounds terrible. Horrid experience. You were kind not to press charges.
@aprilroselilleyman7 ай бұрын
Just because it's legal doesn't mean it doesn't effect or hurt other people. I know you have 'a right' to take photos in public, but maybe that woman for whatever reason was so uncomfortable with you sneakily taking a photo without her consent - she's entitled to her feelings. Where do you draw the line with street photography? Candid moments are great but I feel like it's equally important to show respect when doing street photography. That's just my opinion.
@FrazerDoesWargaming6 ай бұрын
If the rolls were reversed and I was a woman, and it was a man who nearly knocked me out what would you be saying. I never said she wasn’t entitled to get upset but it’s not okay to assault people
@aprilroselilleyman6 ай бұрын
If the rolls were reversed it’s exactly the same situation, you took a photo of someone clearly not wanting to be photographed - you are going to get a reaction. Yes she/or he legally shouldn’t of slapped you, but just as street photographers say ‘it’s legal to take photos’ ‘I’m allowed to in a public space’ ‘people hand over the right to privacy once they walk out their door’ well you are also handing over the right and should accept that people aren’t going to approve, will argue with you, and confront you. Think of it from the other persons shoes, hearing ‘I’m legally allowed to take photos of you’ is creepy and disrespectful, not to mention you’ve already started the argument on me vs them territory. doesn’t matter if it’s legal, there’s other ways to reassure people on the street and to open them up to the idea of street photography rather than constantly declaring to the world ‘it’s legal!!!’
@BP-xe7dw6 ай бұрын

He yelled "I should break yo camera" lots of cursing and stepped forward when i steoped back. Hit him with a step back counter right and dropped him. Crowd of people started yelling "oohhh" and "worldstar!" The decade+ of boxing never fails me. When you can fight/defend yourself it comes in handy when you can't calm the situation.

Only weird thing I’ve had happen so far was some dude trying to walk up on me/behind me as if he was going to try to rob me or sucker punch me (I think he thought I was taking pictures of him) but I had my eye on him the whole time while I was at this park. As I was leaving I see him walking across the grass diagonally towards me. I sped up and so did he. At that moment I knew it was about to go down so I put my camera in my bag and got ready for whatever. I turn to look over my shoulder at him so he knows I acknowledge his presence. I circle the bench where a guy was sitting and I guess I spooked him out of whatever he was trying to do since he realized I was fully aware of him so he just kept walking straight but we kept looking back at each other. I left the area and walked near a group of people. Didn’t see him again. Always be aware of your surroundings and I use common sense when and when not to photograph certain people (just based off their look/demeanor)

Glad you are safe. I used to do a lot of night photography in Seattle. It became really unsafe, unless I was with somebody. I get engrossed in what I am doing and not paying attention as to who is coming my way. When you have a tripod, you stick out like a sore thumb. So I had a couple of incidents, almost confrontations. Trying to explain to people is actually counterproductive. Just walk away. Recently a pier fisherman thought I was working for the government or a local newspaper, telling me he has a license. The pictures were all from the back. He got angrier and I just walked away. No need to explain. You are not dealing with reasonable people, its all emotions. Your safety comes first. Again glad you were safe.

OH and if that Konica ends up having some problems let me know id love to work on one of those and fix up and add to my collection .. I have yet to see any Konica cameras here in Michigan .. Not sure why lol. But anyway that film stock . I did not keep any of the boxes or the spools :(.. The film says Kodak GC 400. I know it was not gold 400 .. No idea but turns out I got amazing results from that film stock and would buy it again if I found it.. Normally around here all I find in local stores is Fuji based films.. I have many rolls for Seperia and and 200 that ill be shooting this season.. And I have had decent luck with Seperia in the past.. Now if you asked Medium Format stocks.. I love Kodak Ektar 100..

i dont live in or near a huge city like anything in california but i always try my best to be aware of where my camera is pointed since like you said people are the most sensitive creatures ever. Like for example one time i was trying to take a picture of a coffee machine (on display, not behind the counter for use) with my sony a7riii at a coffee shop and pointed my camera down a few times when people were walking by, just little things like that that remove people's ability to get mad at you. Might also help i dont have a stereotypical "photographer aesthetic", no disrespect to anyone at all but a decent chunk of photographers tend to have a "nerdy" look to themselves, and if i had to guess that makes those people feel more confident in being rude. I dont think you fit in that stereotype with your style and such but still could be a factor with other people and their stories in the comments
