breeding labs are hard trust me every lab breeder wants the puppies to be a litter of every color but that's a 25%chance to happen it's a WAY higher chance for the whole litter to be all one color of one of the parents and about 50/50 chance for 1/2 to be one of the parents colors and the other 1/2 to be the other parents color

Hmm, great with old people? Not sure... our lab would always jump up on my elderly grandma when she came over. I was worried about him knocking her over. :( The problem with labs is that they don't think about the consequences of their actions, well, no dog does... therefore you can't generalize and say they're great with such and such.

CheesyTV thank you for the comment. I understand what you are saying. No dogs come trained , it's how the dogs are raised with daily training. They are great with elderly because they are an easy breed to train and food motivated. So if someone who is elder wants a Labrador, they won't have problems with daily training.

@westmeathguy my dogs are not over weight, I take a lot of pride in them and they are average weight. In person you can still see where the ribs end. Girls get about 1 1/4 cup twice day and my male 2 cups twice. I work in a vet office so I have seen overweight. I have the appropriate measuring cup. Thank you for your concern.

If a family wants the specific qualities and health testing of a breed, there is nothing like the experience of getting a well bred dog.

Yes I believe in rescues as well. I grew up with them. I still have them today. But now that I am a breeder- I learned the best of both worlds. I love my rescues! But for breeding sometimes it's best because families are looking for specific traits and health guarantees that rescuing cannot offer. There is a dog out there for everyone and with alittle research and educaiton they can find them :)

Those are nice looking english labs. People that are interested in labs need to know that there are actually two very different lines of labs. English labs are kind of chubby, fluffy, laid back family dogs with big blocky heads and a stout tail. American field labs are trimmer, much more muscular, thinner coat dogs. American field labs have many of the friendly characteristics of English labs, but usually have much much more athleticism and energy. They are awesome for field work, but for some people they can be a challenge to work with because they need lots and lots of exercise. Both are great dogs, but pick the type that best matches your lifestyle.

+Aleshia Parham - Like the girl in this video, many or most breeders of purebred dogs also welcome mix/rescue dogs into their hearts and homes. It doesn't have to be all one way or the other, does it?
@spongesmith5456
@spongesmith5456 8 жыл бұрын
There are far more dogs in shelters then homes for them. Why are people purposely breeding when we should be saving dogs that are already here. A lot of per breed dogs have health and mental conditions because of inbreeding" to keep the blood line pure". Lets save before we breed.

+Aleshia Parham - I understand and agree that there are many dogs that need to be saved from euthanasia due to being stray or abandoned by irresponsible people.  I am a dog breeder, and I am proud that I produce quality puppies for people who want specific qualities in an animal.  One of the places that seek my puppies are service training organizations that take our pups and put them through a year and a half to two years of training to assist disabled service men and women.  Before that I worked as a docent for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, placing puppies with sight impaired individuals who will need a dependable lifelong companion.  The breeds chosen for this work come with an inherent call to service - they understand that their humans need them.  Training agencies, for the most part, don't want mixed breed dogs or poorly bred dogs that will present obstacles during the training process due to their activity levels, temperaments, or personality flaws.  I breed the purebred dogs that these agencies rely upon to make their efforts to assist others go smoothly. I also think that it is entirely appropriate to seek a lifelong companion whose breed qualities match your needs.  While you might be only familiar with puppy mill or back yard breeders who bring more problems into the world than assets, this AKC video is trying to present to the world the other side of the coin - those of us - the majority - who produce healthy, happy litters for loving, responsible homes.  I only ask that you educate yourself to your opposing view, which is what any good debater does.  The AKC assists me in educating me about my breed, keeping my puppies healthy, and helping to find them good homes with good people.  They also do so much for mixed breed and abandoned animals.  You should support the AKC. Let's save - - - an breed responsibly.

I see and understand your point. For service work I get that you need to know what your getting from that dog. I do know some people really love a breed and want to better it. I just think more should be done about backyard breeders and puppy mills. I think to breed dogs or cats or any animal you should have to have a license. That is renewed ever time you want to breed your animal. I see both sides and understand both sides. I just feel their is less done about the less glamorous side.
@sherylelyman9688

+Aleshia Parham - You make some great points, Aleshia.  Reputable dog breeders, like most folks who work with and within the AKC, are in total opposition to "back yard breeding" and those who breed dogs so that their kids "can watch the miracle of birth."  I have people call me all the time for a dog that they intend to breed later for those purposes. I try to educate them, and they never get a dog from me. My contract for a puppy includes clauses that state: (1) if they can't keep the dog for any reason, that I will always take it back. (2) that the dog may not be bred for any reason, either "accidentally" or intentionally, or I will sue. (3) that the dog not be spayed and neutered until the dog has reached physical maturity - at around 18 to 24 months old, in order to complete the maturation of the bone growth plates and ensure lifelong health. There are many other clauses to protect the dog from any unscrupulous action on the part of the new owners, and although I maintain a friendly lifelong (of the dog) relationship with my owners, they know that I will enforce my contract. This is not unusual in the world of good dog breeding, it is pretty much standard practice.   People who don't understand the costs of breeding think there is money in it.  And if you do it the irresponsible way they do, you might make a little change.  We have had seven litters - all of our dogs are health certified through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.  The Golden Retriever Club of America mandates what tests have to be done on our breed in order to be certified safe and healthy to be bred.  So we get testing done on their hips, elbows, heart, eyes, and thyroid.  Most of these tests can only be done when the dogs meet physical maturity - at around 2 years old, and they are very expensive.  So there is already a huge investment in a good dog in order to breed.  Our bitches are bred to the finest stud dogs in the country - who, of course, are also thoroughly health tested and who have proven themselves structurally sound in the show ring, obedience ring, rally, agility and on occasion the field as hunters. This is not unusual. Good breeders like dog activities and we like to play with our dogs and give them good lives. These are also our pets.  If for some reason we find that they are not good to breed, we don't sell them or farm them out.  They are our companions for the rest of their lives, whether or not they produce litters. In the end, you don't make any money breeding good dogs - like the people in the videos, you do it because you want to better the breed, and you want to pass down those wonderful characteristics that are inherent in each breed.  German Shepherds are uber smart, and want to work hard.  Goldens want to serve.  My Havanese comes from centuries of breeding to tell me when someone is on my property.  Rat terriers want to hunt vermin. Old English Sheepdogs want to bring the flock home.  Coon hounds want to tree raccoons. This has been bred into them, and now its what they want to do, because they do it well. All of these in-bred traits create very specific personality and temperament features that make them splendid dogs for some specific person or family, and they should continue "being."  I do have a county licenses on all my dogs, and because they are intact girls, the licenses costs me three times as much as a spayed or neutered animal.  I wouldn't mind if someone wanted to come inspect my kennel area - but for God's sake, let's work together to go after the puppy mills and back yard breeders first, huh? And how about the "rescue" organizations that are importing poorly bred and unhealthy dogs from Asia and Turkey, in order to satisfy the American sentiment to "rescue."  Haven't heard of that scheme?  Google it.  Right now there is a widespread canine flu epidemic in Indiana and Ohio, a strain of canine flu not seen in this country before, that has been traced to imported dogs from S. Korea.  There is no shame in getting the dog YOU want - from a reputable breeder.  But lets stop the "either, or" absolutistic approach to obtaining a pet.
