I always thought the implication was that Renge WAS doing multiplication, and that it was Konomi explaining to her the addition method that helped her understand it. To a kid "9x9" might feel like this difficult and arcane problem, but when she understands that 9x9 is just representing nine added together nine times, it suddenly makes perfect sense.
