This song was described by its writer and singer, Mr Neil Diamond, as one of the most difficult he has ever written. Maybe because it is autobiographical in nature - written when he was feeling despair, unheard by anyone, not understood, maybe rejected in some way - things we all feel at some point or other in life. Especially when younger.
Well, his countless fans certainly love the song (which secured a Grammy nomination in 1971). Many of them can relate to it, and say it is their favourite of all his songs. Not so his critics, some of whom say they hate it. One of their points of denigration being that he used the word “chair” not for any deep reasons but just so that it would rhyme with “there” in the previous line of the song.
To which…someone who might have a tiny bit more insight into who Neil Diamond is, might be justified in responding “does it really matter?” Is it not more important that it comes as a cry of anguish from deep inside his soul. Does it not matter that he is actually so deep that even his external self (that is, his looks) tells some of the story. It would not be far-fetched to say that he was absolutely striking when he sang his songs. And it never mattered about lofty sounding language, he got his point across even without that - and in a big way. Women still swoon when they see his pictures and hear that unique voice.
For a long time, I felt rather hesitant about doing a video of this song so special to Neil. But it is a simple enough song and I felt it was time I put aside my diffidence. Neither here nor there, it’s just another video among many others in this forum. I hope you will enjoy it.

Stimmt, es ist ein schöner Song. Und tatsächlich, tut es manchmal gut zu weinen, nicht wahr? Solange es nicht zu lange dauert 😊 (yes, it is a beautiful song. And actually it is sometimes good to cry isn't it? As long as it doesn't last for too long).

Hello Nas! I did like the vídeo. The Song, of course is in my top 10. The chair, for me, is the psichiatrist chair. It doesn't really matter. My interpretation of these lyrics is that he had come to the crossroads of his life. Not necessárily a choice between two cities. Maybe a choice between what his way of living up to then and a whole New One in a New Horizon he hadn't considered yet... I don't know. All I know is that I love it. I Believe this was my first Neil Diamond Song. Good for you, Nas. Nice vídeo!

Hi Joana, great to hear from you again! Hope you've been well. Thanks for the comment and of course you are right about the "crossroads of his life". It certainly would have been a big thing to leave home behind and find a new place far away - and everything that goes with that (something I'm well acquainted with 😊 It was the first Neil song you heard! Such a significant and well-loved one too. Thanks again for your comment, it is much appreciated.
