Nigeria’s problem today is that the current constitution is embarrassingly defective! It doesn’t provide clear cut consequences and specific penalties for moderate and humongous criminal offense like the extreme corruption of public officers including the President, Governors , Ministers etc who steal insane amount of money from public coffers. The constitution is not only very silent on how these officers will be punished, it also confers on them the immunity that no one should intervene against such heinous crimes until the perpetrators are out of office! This is how political crimes stench to high heavens in Nigerian! In America where Nigeria copied presidential democracy from , if a president committed any crime no matter the level, immediately a bipartisan high powered inquiries are instituted and mandated to get to the root of the matter and if found guilty impeachment proceedings follow immediately! That was what happened in the case of water-gate scandal that saw the president resign from office etc ! Nigerian constitution is as useless for good democratic governance as a basket is useless for fetching water! It requires total overhaul so that it’s lapses and weaknesses will be identified and formidably fixed to make it an effective and efficient instrument for building and sustaining a strong national and progressive political economy .
