I really like watching a true blind playthrough. It really makes me appreciate what Miyazaki does to these games in terms of design - nothing is told directly, everything is taught via worldbuilding and level design. Forcing you to take a step back and use your head - the solution is always pretty easy, but we're so used to games explaining stuff that lack of such explanation makes it even more fun. During one of his interviews Miyazaki mentioned that he wanted for the players to have a similar sense of discovery to the one he experienced when he started reading more difficult books as a child, and even though he didn't know the whole Japanese alphabet, the part of discovery and filling in the gaps was even more fun. Really resonates well with lots of players.

Dying a lot in FROMSOFT titles IMO is very rewarding as you see really cool new moves and interactions which you could miss if you're searching up best builds and breeze through the game. Not saying I condemn it but as a viewer it's so much more enjoyable watching someone experiencing things for the first time without being spoiled what's the best weapon or what boss is which or if it's a hard one and it makes you start appreciating the story/gameplay/cinematics of the actual fights even more.

Just wanted to say since you specifically asked chat about this in the last vod: upgrading shields does in fact make them better, just not every level. If you upgrade it, I believe, to +3 it will gain +1 to its Guard Boost (If you block D damage D * (100 - Guard Boost) is the amount of stamina you will lose) and typically a further +1 Guard Boost every ~3 levels after that. It scales slowly because Guard Boost is quite powerful. I think they should really have made them gain their first increase to Guard Boost at +1 because some people seem to think there's no reason to upgrade shields because, presumably, they've never leveled one up far enough to see the benefit. I think players are typically more interested in upgrading weapons and all weapons improve meaningfully with every upgrade and since the game never gives you any reason to think shields might work differently it's entirely reasonable to assume that shields will never improve meaningfully by looking at the stats on the first upgrade.

I really love how Grubby is just having fun exploring the world, trying things and isn't letting any silly notions in chat hurry him or tell him how to have fun. I can feel the joy of just wandering around in the world and it's contagious. 😊 First time playing a Soulsborne game is just really special 💕

Epic Name Bro, one of the original Souls youtubers had a good way to get better at fighting bosses. He would spend all of his time in the first few attempts just trying to dodge and survive for as long as possible and not attack at all. Basically what Grubby did there with Darriwil

It's been super fun watching you blindly experience the game, appreciate the no backseating policy even if sometimes the mods are a little heavy handed on it. (Example, explaining very basic mechanics the game will never directly tell him such as "hey you can hit the glowly part when they're stunned for a special attack")

@@just-gaming213 If Grubby actually paid attention, yes. It's not like he doesn't read, he just glazes over stuff sometimes because he thinks he already knows what it's telling him. His experiences solely sticking with RTS frequently narrows his perspective on things and causes him to overlook simple solutions. His curiosity practically doesn't exist so things take longer to solve, but he makes up for it in patience and usually figures things out thoroughly with enough time.

2:45:00 Also wanted to note how you can and should utilize heavy attacks and variations of them for each and every weapon (some are unique, like the lucky 1% drop chance Iron cleaver you got, if you hold down the heavy attack button, see for yourself), as well as jumping attacks, guard counters, because they help breaking enemy guard faster - all these things you've done/learned in the tutorial level at the very start of the game. Some Ashes of War have two variations as well, for one you press light attack for the other heavy attack (square off is one of them, you can pretty much just read the description of it to see this :P), I'm not familiar with KBM inputs, so I'm guessing it would be ctrl+LMB and ctrl+RMB.

Spoilerfree tips: - I will reiterate that you should read item descriptons ALWAYS (the bigger and more detailed version of the description I mean). Reading weapon descriptions will also describe its skill and how to use it - The numbers that indicate damage are a bit hard to read. The first number is the base damage followed by "+ x" where x is the scaling, that needs to be added to the base damage to see what the total gets to. Alternatively, you can change view on the right side of the screen and see the total value already added up under "right armament 1 attack damage" (or whatever armament you're analyzing)

I know you don’t like “backseat drivers” or spoilers but this isn’t that. Because you ran through and missed so much of the tutorial, you should know that when you stagger a boss or large creature, a “lit up spot” appears on them which allows you to get a critical hit. You finally figured out how to do backstabs so now it’s time for critical hits. BTW, I know I’m months late with this but just found your channel. Hopefully in the next episode or two, someone shared this with you or you figured it out.

I don't like when people go, "how does anyone think of this???" when seeing a design. Like they just thought, "ok we have mausoleums where you can duplicate boss souls how do we make this more interesting and challenging?". Making it move in an open world game is a natural choice, then they logically go, "ok but if it's moving how will players know when it's nearby?" so they put a bell on it. Then they logically go, "well how will we put guards around it if it's moving?" in which case they put ghost guards that can appear and disappear naturally. All creative decisions are born out of logic and I think just going, "well it's cause they're Japanese" or "well it's cause they're on drugs" is insulting to the creative process artists around the world go through.

The one thing I hate about this game is the cliff jumping... It is extremely unrealistic and on top of that it's confusing. You can jump from like a 50 meter tall cliff, but 55 meters kills you. It's almost impossible to judge if you will die from fall dmg, or if you can safely jump off:(( In the previous dark souls games was waay easier to judge whether a jump would kill you or not.
