I Am Sick Of Pokémon Gimmicks!

Megas were good, i just wish we had more. I've said this before but in X/Y the version that released the megas not a single gen6 pokemon recieved a mega, and only a single gen5 pokemon. It was until ORAS when the only gen6 got a mega....and it was a mythical. So not even obtainable in the early part of the game

I heard the reason why gens 5 and 6 didn't get many megas was because they want to focus on older pokemon so the majority of megas was from Gens 1-4 while Gens 5 and 6 were still new at the time of XY's release.

For double battles? Absolutely, but it was TERRIBLE for singles! I do think they should have allowed Dynamax mons to be flinched with fake out, though

A reset is very much needed, they (mostly) did that for gen 5 and i loved it for that. I think every 5 gens or so should be a reset

I love the early gimmicks. Mega's were an amazing addition to the games, my only problem is Mewtwo X and Y aswell as Charizard X and Y. Yes they are the two most popular of Gen 1 and got special treatment, but the point is of Mega's is to amplify the strengh of a pokemon and go beyond the normal strengh of the pokemon. for some examples, mega Camerupt keeps the Volcano theme on it's back, Mega aggron gets bigger and adds more steel to it's body and Mega Diancie adds more rocks/gems, not all the mega's have this same style of evolution but still, overall the same pokemon but with a similiar concept with stronger stats. In the end Pokemon should have given Mewtwo and Charizard the Y Mega's since they are closest to the actual Pokemon. Z-Moves were an interesting concept, less then Mega's but it was still the first time we saw this powerful one turn move which changed the game, Dynamx is the worse since it seems like a worse version of Z-moves and Mega's where the the pokemons change forms and that the turn for the powerful move last longer. tera is also very bad because it's looks like a worse version of Mega's and Z-moves again where this time each pokemon get a a new attack (Z-moves) and for unlimited turns (Mega's). Overall just go back to the originals. also instead of changing each generation, they should change it every 2-3 generations depending on popularity, keeping stuff like gen's 6 horde encounters or gen's 7 calling for other pokemon so that while it is repetitive, not enough that people are bored.

Oh absolutely! I don't think Charizard AND Mewtwo needed two forms! One would have sufficed! I do like Zard X a lot so I am leaning more towards that one as the actual mega but Mewtwo Y made more sense for that mon! Yes, Dynamax is way, way worse and I can't get behind it! Tera isn't as bad as Dynamax, but I do like z moves more than it! yeah, having gimmicks stick around for 2-3 years is fine! Do what Yugioh did and make a gimmick every 3 years like they did with synchro, XYZs, Pendulum and then links!

I never found dynamax over powered most online matches against people using a ton of legendarys or meta teams I just forgot to click the dynamax button and still held on against them just fine without it

I like Megas, I *love* Regional Variants and Convergents, Z-Moves are fine and fit very well within the culture of Alola, Dynamax blows chunks, and Tera is very unique and interesting. That all said, whatever the 2024-2025 games are should absolutely carry on Tera so we can extend the lifespan of the generation and actually play the new games competitively (cough BDSP cough). But I hope Gen 10 has no gimmick and just goes back to the way things were in gens 4 and 5. The simple times.

Gimmicks were done because of megas and because otherwise people will complain about pokemon being the same. They’re no different than each series of yugioh having an extra deck feature.

I like how you saved my comment for last lol. XD Other than that, I can see what you mean by a "hard reset". (I mean, they sorta tried doing that with Pokemon Black/White by locking all the Pokemon from past generations to the post-game. Although that's probably more of a "soft-reset"?) Idk, it's probably a matter of time until they somehow run out of more gimmick ideas later on in the future should they continue the status quo. I feel like Natures, Abilities, Held Items, and the Physical/Special Split work out for me as part of the status quo because they're permanent and for the most part they make sense to keep around. (Otherwise we'd have the whole fiasco of keeping Dark as a special attacking type and Ghost as a physical attacking type and the Elemental Punches as special moves) Gimmicks seem to easily be replaced each generation, I mean yeah we also got Megas in Gen 7 but they're obviously not in the forefront. I mean this isn't even the fangame/rom hack Pokemon Unbound where the devs try to have all the gimmicks (pre-Gen 9 at least, mind you) at once.

Sure, that probably doesn't go over well with a lot of people, but I do wanna keep all the mechanics like physical/special split, abilities, items, etc, just want brand new Pokemon every gen!

Because mechanics like physical/special split, abilities, held items, ability to run (thank goodness to gen 3), move tutors and move reminders, and even IVs and EVs and natures work as PERMANENT core staples to the franchise. The issue with gimmicks is that they don't quite work as a permanent core staples, they're easily replaceable each generation and they don't add much to the gameplay beyond uniqueness to an extent. Maybe that's why I'm not a fan of gimmicks being a literal status quo for the franchise and why I wanted each gen to be varied between gimmickless and gimmickful. (Okay, these probably are NOT actual words but Idfk man) But yeah, a full blown hard reset is probably necessary. I mean yeah, it's arguably risky and it might piss fans off, I mean the fanbase used to be livid when BW first came out as a soft reset....only for fans to realize the hard way over time when the Gen 5 games are now some of the most well-regarded games in the franchise and that underwhelming reception when the Gen 5 games first came out despite so much passion and love put into those games probably kinda kickstarted Pokemon going downhill from there. But still, I'd like to see a new pokemon game that is BOTH gimmickless and has pokemon from past generations/previous regions only accessible in the post-game unless they're part of the evolutionary family of said newly debut pokemon of said region. In a way, this would give the region a "clean fresh start". Keep important core mechanics, you can still add new pokemon and make new stories and characters, but sometimes something simple and not overly ambitious and gimmicky is a fine change of pace after like 4 gens of games with core gimmicks.

Terastallization is the best gimmick since Mega Evolution. While gimmicks do help to make the games more unique, the biggest drawback is that they usually seem to be locked to specific games/eras/consoles, eventually making it less likely for future Pokémon fans to relate to the older ones since they never had the chance to experience the hype behind them like when they were first introduced.

@@JaCubAsAlwaysytdynamax actually worked with the setting and story. It was all spectating and a show for battles. In other games pokemon was a side thing or not as glorified as it was shown in Galar. The closest was alola but that was it :/

Regional Variants aren't really gimmicks... since they're a recurring thing and regularly used to breathe new life into old Pokémon, they're probably the best thing the franchise has done since Megas.

I hated megas when they came out, I thought they ruined the game. I'm still not a fan of them but I got used to them. I liked the z moves but thought they were disappointing. Then the last two gimmicks have been absolutely horrible. I refused to use either one of them. I've beaten violet 5 times with different teams and never used terralization one time. I want them to get rid of all the gimmicks. The hard reset could be a really cool idea. It could really work well if it was in a region that represents Africa, Australia or south America. A place that doesn't have its own game yet and that in real life have their own unique ecology without much overlap from other continents

I agree to this statement and disagree as well in other ways. I agree with Dmax being horrible, but I definitely semi enjoy Tera. Z moves are cool and I loved Megas haha! And I'm glad you still have fun playing the games without the gimmicks! And I'm happy others are open to the whole reset idea, because I thought I'd get ROASTED in the comments! Haha

“Pokemon games that doesn’t have any gimmicks” Gen 2: Debatably- Breeding. Gen 3: Contests and Secret Bases Gen 4: Grand Underground Gen 5: Rotation Battles + Dreamworld + Pokeathalon Gen 6: Megas Gen 7: Z Crystals Gen 8: Dynamax Gen 9: Tera Depending on if you count breeding for Gen 2, we’ve been doing Gimmicks since Gen 2/3. They just weren’t as in-your-face until Megas were controversial in Gen 6. Personally? I’m tired of new gimmicks. I want them to either create something new and keep it, or bring back old shit. I’m tired of getting excited about a gimmick or thinking its cool and then being like, “Eh. It’ll be gone by next gen so there’s no point in investing my energy into it.” I want a Pokemon Game that has all of their good ideas brought into it- maybe you can only use one Battle Gimmick per battle (so either Mega, Tera, OR Z-Crystal) and then bring back Contests and the Pokeathalon. Maybe the Grand Underground, too.

This includes dynamax. The next gimmick though I'd love to see involving a set up gimmick. Say you get to double your stat boost when the gimmick is activated, incentivizes set up play. But you can only do it with one pokemon per battle.
