I went out about 7am to tinker in the garden. By 11am the heat index was 106. I'm just now going back outside at 7pm.

Got my brassicas (cabbages and brussel sprouts) planted and placed in my little greenhouse. That way, they are protected, but they harden off immediately when they sprout. My cucumbers, onions and lettuce are doing great right now. Tomatoes are still green but producing well. So frustrated trying to get basil, dill, sunflowers to germinate. You know, maybe, I will go to the grocery store and buy some fresh basil to root. (I forget that I can do that with basil, parsley, etc.) Melons and squash starting up great. My ginger is still taking it's time. Boc choy and pac choy are so reliable at any time...I will plant those a little later for Fall harvest. My goodness, a hurricane?! So glad we don't have to worry about that here in Wisconsin. We have been so blessed with rain every few days. You keep me on track with my planning. Thanks for all the good info.

You’ve got a lot of great stuff going! I buy the little basil plants from the grocery store and plant them. They also root well if I take a 3 or 4” cutting at a leaf node of a larger plant. Takes about 2 weeks but they look pretty and smell good on the counter under a cabinet light. I can take pinches for salads while it’s rooting.

I like the idea of shade cloth over your seeds. I put my seedlings in an old coke bottle crate and put them on top of the bed they’re going to be planted. The hope is they’ll get started better than if I direct sowed them. Pumpkins, artichoke, broccoli and kale is what I’m experimenting with.

get 4 tomato cages, put one in each corner of your bed. Then use clothes pins to clip the shade cloth to the cage. (you may need one in the center as well).

That would work well

Jeff from East Tennessee! I am growing a lot of late summer plants this year. I just planted more cucumbers. I have tomatoes and peppers growing at all different stages. I want to extend summer as long as I can. Things look good so far this summer. I am going to start short day onions in middle/late July. Everything else will probably be late July or early August.

Yeah I started my brassicas on the deck in the sun. Saves time as they germinated in 3 days and no week needed for hardening off. Direct sowing was not good with germination, just got to hot. I'm starting winter squash and melons indoors next year. You have me thinking of trying to over winter onion starts might experiment with it. Have a great weekend!

I suggest putting into small pots. My failures were because the little seed cells dry out quickly. I get the seeds sprouting ok. But at 3 or 4 weeks in, they dry out and fry. Or, my attempt to keep them watered brings on root rot. Shade is good until temps drop considerably. Indirect light should be ok. You'll be able to tell if they get leggy. I've been curious about direct sowing too. I may join you in the journey . I will definitely use shade cloth - for shade and moth protection.
