Red Dragons are much more iconic than Greens, appearing on the cover of the Red Box, which was the most iconic release of the rules. So I understand why they made the change in the D&D set, though I do prefer the face on the original Green Dragon. If you look carefully at the Inn, there are multiple mimics inside, the bed and a the chest and there is a suggestion that the inn itself is a mimic in the way it's coloured.
@acidous7 ай бұрын
the issue isnt just the face, but that "DnD accurate" dragon has almost no articulation in the limbs and you cannot wrap it around the tower like the original set. We voted for a cool diorama setpice and we've got shitty "adventure". There are more compromises like that trough the entire set.

The submission designer said he chose green because the first LEGO dragon was green and it was a callback. The interviews with the LEGO designers said that for licensing requirements they had to switch it to red and the character of the red dragon had to fit within the lore. The first two Basic D&D sets had red dragons on the cover. The first was the one I grew up with and the second is considered so iconic WotC has done takedowns of people alluding to its design. This is them working within constrains imposed for licensing reasons which is not better or worse. The former wouldn't have been possible, it was vetoed by the rights holder (Hasbro).
@tychay4 ай бұрын
@@Lil_BroskeeThe adventure is great. There is even a live play through of it on KZbin as part of launch. I disagree on what "we voted for" since unlike the other sets, LEGO acquired the licensing first (as well as a timeline to coincide with the 50th anniversary of D&D) and had a competition to submit instead of it coming from the community first. So what the winning set did was beat out competing designs, not have a particular feature that got it to 1000+. The biggest win in the set is playability. The proof is in the facts that 1) I don't have the Mimic GWP because it sold out before I woke up even though this is one of the most expensive Ideas sets, and 2) They are coming out with minifigure line and probably more in this theme. If not for the playability - which is crazy here, I don't know of an 18+ line that comes close to this level - I don't think there'd have been spin-offs. Since it is D&D and not a video game, you just need representation in the playability, not articulation. Some RPGers have been using LEGO as a substitute for lead, pewter, and now plastic miniatures and dioramas for a while now. I'd gladly trade off the articulation of a single set for basically the possibility of an entire line of D&D stuff that could replace miniature representation in a game (and be better). All the fans who beat me to purchasing such an expensive set proves that this may be amongst the best Ideas set for LEGO the business.
@goldenbottle46286 ай бұрын
I agree that Lego overall improves the sets. I just think that you should not count added details like stickers and fitting base plates as improvements because that is something ideas sets can't print or manufacture. Also a lot of improved sets are just better because of a collaboration with an IP. While the ideas sets are just fan recreation of a show or a movie... so it can't possibly be as accurate.

I think there are a couple other parts in there that were long out of production at the point the set was approved.

As someone who *is* into D&D, swapping the green dragon for a red dragon is a bit arbitrary. Lots of old D&D manuals had either a green or a red dragon on the cover. The very first Basic Set box had a red dragon, so maybe that's why that color edged out. Personally I associate D&D with a red dragon more. Also I'm skeptical of any big, poseable brick built figure that only exists in renders. The brick-built green dragon looks cool, but who knows how well it functions in the real world or if it could even stay wrapped around the tower. So the LEGO version gets my vote on this.

To point something out, that giant Eggman isn't him, that's the Death Egg Robot. The actual Eggman build is inside of it, which was shown off in the other pictures for it on the ideas page. I hate how people think that "bright color = better" in practically every set. A lot of these original designs, especially the buildings, were beautifully presented with muted, realistic tones that made you feel like it was a cold autumn day or a windy coast. They were dripping with mood and character, feeling like they were models of a real place, even though they weren't. Lego instead took that, shat on it, and spammed a bunch of random vibrant colors to make everything look like fucking Lego City. I hate it so damn much. A lot of BEAUTIFUL desaturated Lego colors are just nonexistent in these sets or are used as accents rather than centerpieces. And before anyone says "it's for kids" no the fuck they aren't. This theme is very much for adults or old teens who like display sets.
@cass74485 ай бұрын
I think it's pretty clear at this point that Lego considers the brighter colour palette to be a part of their brand "identity" so to speak. They want eyes to be immediately drawn to shelves in the store. So when they can reasonably make a set brighter, they do. It's less of a judgment of whether particular colours look better on a given set, and more of a conscious marketing decision.

They could put restrictions on it, too. Only allowing one or two sets per round that are based on an existing license, and tell the fans straight-up once the vote starts if they can’t get the license, and remove them then. Then only allow the top few non-licensed winners to win outside of that.

Most of the ideas from Lego Ideas are based on someone else's intellectual property. Sometimes the IP owners will tell Lego what to include and not include in the sets, like in the case of the Orient Express and the Dungeons & Dragons sets. You can't really blame Lego for changing the designs in those cases. Wizards of the Coast wanted a Red Dragon and the original elongated build did not resemble a canonical D&D dragon.

I didn't wanna just point to the bigger/more detailed set every time and say it was better (like the Sesame Street one for example) cus that'd be kinda boring and would also ignore the practicality of making it into a real set. It probably would've been more accurate to say 'I agree/disagree with the changes' as opposed to 'I prefer this/that design'
@SoundClaw093 ай бұрын
Sesame Street has so much associated with it within itself. While I would have paid the $350, the sheer amount of references we got inside the official set kinda made up for it feeling squished. Plus, the fact that Lego got to make custom molds on an Ideas set for the first time was great. So many classic characters are referenced inside the set. It’s small though. I compare it to Hogwarts Castle 71043 (Crystal Fontan worked on both sets) in the sense that everything is sort where it goes, but not really. I’d probably just design a MOC for more. Now that Sesame has retired, it might be less expensive to create a MOC.

The set is supposed to represent the black seas barracuda from 1989 and if they just made the texture of the ship brown, nobody would think its the barracuda. Though they solved the "The ship was beached on this island for a long time now" part with the extra parts that would turn the ship into a wreck. Pretty much a better execution in my opinion.

I think it's because the technic brick on the right has a hollow stud on the top, whereas the one on the left is a full stud. That's exactly the case. The height difference is not enough to be noticeable from looking, but it is enough to cause parts to break over time. Unless OP was asking why not fully connected parts are illegal connection, in which case it's similar problem of stress being applied to the part in a way it wasn't designed for to handle, as well as connection just not being secure enough for Lego standards.

Sure, they’re both based on Green Hill, but the submission was based on how GHZ appeared in Sonic Mania, while the final set is based on how GHZ appears in the first Sonic game. The “Eggman Build” in the submission is based on the boss of the Mania zone while the final set has Eggman himself, 2 other characters (the hard boiled heavies) got cut entirely, the final set was longer and narrower than the submission, and, in my opinion, the submission has a better Classic Sonic minifigure because it uses the shorter legs and Classic Sonic is shorter than Sonic’s current design. Not only did they remove the big appeal of the set being the Death Egg Robot (first main boss of mania, final boss of sonic 2), but they also completely ruined the eggman minifigure. They need to accept starwars sets. That is literally all they have to do

Where is the bigger ghost busters set

the only ones i personally disagree with are adventure time and sonic, while the builds are better in thr Adventure Time are better, having less important characters like princess bubblegum and fire princess. now the sonic one i completely disagree on because they completely changed the game. changing it from sonic mania to sonic 1, that wouldn't be completely terrible and i actually do like the official set but i vastly prefer the death egg robot, the flickes (the little birds) having heavy magician and heavy gunner was amazing. to see them lost just go get sonic 1 makes me sad, i don't hate sonic 1 or anything its just so different from the original submission that its just not as good, and the one thing thry could of kept between the two sets was the medium legs, since classic sonic is supposed to be short and not tall. other then that, amazing video thst i agreed with mostly, tho imo thr doctor who they could of had both, bigger tardis inside with the nice outside.

28:29 most biased review on Lego ever with the score being LEGO 47, original 11 if you’re looking to watch a video that’s critical on Lego I wouldn’t recommend this video

I went into this expecting it to be closer, too. Maybe not 50/50 but 60/40 max. I went through each set/submission with an open mind and explained my reasoning for each like I geniunely didn't intend to just be bigging LEGO up the whole time. For a few of them I can see why people would disagree with me but even at that, I feel like the score was always gonna be lopsided in LEGOs favour just because improving these submissions is their job lol like something must be really wrong if they were consistently worsening submissions for 10+ years lmao Why were you expecting/wanting it to be more critical? Feels like you wanted a certain tone/answer for the question going into it?

I do lol. Probably some mixture of me being uncomfortable recording myself and also cutting out all my inhales/dead air so the sprites don't linger

Wow this is sad. To say that the ridicoulous Lego version of the table football for an msrp of 250 bucks is anything even worth considering shows clearly that this is not an objective video, sorry. That set is so offensive it's just sad. I mean if you can't do it then just don't!
