You asked excellent questions, listened to the answers, then followed up with more relevant questions and/or discussion. That's what made this so successful. I feel like I understand more about the methodology of development after this interview. The more people who see this, the better the feedback will be in the future. You have done the Destiny community a service AN. You also displayed that people can have passionate opinions and disagreements, yet still have a respectful discourse. Good job all around. Congrats!

Great interview! I think it’s important for Destiny players to understand that developers - particularly lead/head developers at a large studio, like Bungie - have a ton on their plates at work. Taking the time aside to do a 45 minute live interview is not a small sacrifice. It’s also a big risk for someone like Proctor to answer questions like these candidly, on the fly, in a way that’s simultaneously honest and potentially open to misinterpretation by thousands of viewers. If I’m not mistaken, Proctor is the same guy who was harassed/threatened by reddit users in 2022. If so, he deserves a lot of credit for stepping up to this interview. In short, Proctor was not obligated to do this, and probably made his job harder by doing it, but he did it anyway. Hopefully the community appreciates that.

Really good video and cool to see bungie folks explaining their thought process. One thing I'd like to hear more about, something you went in depth on with primary weapons, is special weapons, specifically jump sniping. What their thought process behind that is, what AE build I'd need to hit those if it looks like I'm on target. Another major point would be stompees, ofc not necessarily something a weapons lead could go into detail on, but maybe he has some insight. If there would ever be a way hit a jump snipe with stompees, or why they got hit so unnecessarily hard in the first place, it felt like stompees hunter weren't allowed to participate in this new system at all

I admit, I do get a smidge worried when they say they "listen to the streaming/content creator" community so much. There are plenty of people who are passionate about the game that don't create content or aren't top tier pvp players but really enjoy it. And I feel far too many streamers think those people are unimportant.

These were really good questions. One outstanding question (something you brought up) was about "artificial skill gap." I don't really see that skill gap as "artificial" - it's just *the* skill gap. I understand the want to not get newlights blown out of the water, etc., but skill gap exists like in any god - some people are bad, some are good, some are average. Bungie seems to have taken the position that the "skill gap" is, all things being equal, bad. They compressed the skill gap when there was no SBMM, and now that there is SBMM, they don't have to compress it anymore because there is no real skill gap (or at least a much smaller one) in any given match. What I don't understand is why they are so averse to a skill gap - why is it bad that bad players beat good players? I understand its probably bad for their bottom line, but is it bad for the game? Just seems weird to me. There is a definite skill gap in PvE (if you are not good enough, you don't beat the encounter, period) after all.
@hw811gaming6 Жыл бұрын
Probably woth Destony being Destiny mechanics and all, they might wanna tone down the variabilities of skill gap. Not to mention the coming of guardian commemoration and ranks, which would definitely hurt lower skill layers and over benefit the high skill players which ghen further introduce toxicity in the community moving forward.
@verybadlyburned9766 Жыл бұрын
Google "matchmaking for engagement" GDC presentation, was really insightful. The main thing that makes people drop out of PvP games is the skill gap being too wide and being regularly outclassed. Sure, people can work to improve, but only a certain % will actually get to a high level. If the rest aren't given an option to play balanced games, they'll eventually quit (or be stuck playing a few miserable matches for pinnacles). Worth bearing in mind that if a) everyone improved, or b) all the low skill players dropped out, the end result would be the same as SBMM: high skill players playing sweaty games. The question is how do they make room for everyone else to keep playing PvP too. There's room for hardcore "get good" PvP games in the market, but I don't think Bungie wants D2 to be that. The execution can be wobbly, but can't argue with the goal if they want to appeal to a broad playerbase.
@liquidpaper1349 Жыл бұрын
@@verybadlyburned9766 Yeah, you're not wrong. I know its good for their bottom line, and its good to grow the game, it just feels . . . weird? I'm kind of old, and remember playing WoW back in the Vanilla 2004-2006 days, and if you weren't good enough, that was just too bad. Its been almost 20 years, and I know things have changed drastically. I guess it was just weird this time for Bungie to openly state they are compressing the skill gap (or did compress the skill gap) in order to curb higher skilled players beating the hell out of lower skill players.
@nateeffects3121 Жыл бұрын
This is how every game that I've played works and that's fine. The bad players keep getting stomped till they get good or quit. Why Bungie feels so strongly about stopping this is due to loss of revenue plain and simple.
