25:23 I see were he is coming from but I still think Trunks had great moments out side of first appearance: Trunks blasting Vegeta when he tried to let Cell go was a great character moment for him and vegeta. Trunks taking revenge on the androids. Trunks killing first form cell in his future timeline. Trunks first time going super saiyan after seeing Gohan dead. Although the fight wasn’t all that his first time going grade 3 was pretty cool. Sure Trunks lost to the androids but so did everyone else, sure he lost to Cell but he put up a better fight than everyone else besides Goku and Gohan (you probably argue Vegeta but final flash was the only thing that did damage to cell but it could’ve killed Cell). I do think Trunks is slightly overrated and Rage sucks but he still had great moments.

I think I enjoy the design of SSJ3 more that how it’s used in the show. The design of it represents to me of how much of a work in progress it is as a power up, how unfinished looking it is. How goku states how he’s basically cooked up a newer form above SSJ2. But that’s my opinion. I love your vids sage! Keep up the grind

For me what I like about Future Trunks is his role as an observer. Like he was raised in a future where all these people were described as these amazing and flawless heroes. But when he actually meets them, they’re just crashout jocks. for me it’s interesting to see him constantly torn between wanting to prevent this alternate timeline from ending up where he was and falling in line for his childhood idols. It did come to blows with him and Vegeta, but it was a little late… but it was also his father. So it’s complicated. TL;DR he’s like a stand in for the audience. Super Future Trunks didn’t really do much for me though. If anything, I feel like they missed an opportunity to emphasize the difference between him and present trunks. And present trunks could idolize future trunks like future trunks idolized dragon Warriors. Blah blah blah I’m sure a real writer could cook.

Am I the only one that thinks Goku and Piccolo were both good to Gohan's character? Not crashing out, just asking a genuine question. In terms of the father figure, I feel like they both do just fine. Goku is the one who gets Gohan to have that ability to crash out, Piccolo makes him aware of it. Piccolo also enforces the Saiyan-esque parenthood with how harsh he was early on, something that Goku half forgot when hitting his head. I say half because it's pretty clear that even his mind is not the same as an Earthling, but instead just preferring that aspect more. Even though Toriyama may have thought about making him a Saiyan later on, he did a good job of depicting how Son Goku is really nothing like the average Earthling, even as a warrior. He has a strange tenacity that doesn't seem to be explained by anything except that we're viewing a main character. A him.

I actually agree with the first take. Goku doesn't progress past cell saga at all. He goes through a character arc in boo saga for sure but when boo saga is over what do you get? Cell saga Goku, Hell even then I'd say that you could argue his character arc resolves at the end of z when he finds oob and what does he do with oob? He starts training him to be the Earth's next Savior. So he's still obsessed with it's just that he realized that wasn't anyone's goal that he knew of. People who were actually strong enough and had the potential to succeed him as the savior of earth didn't want to, so when he finds oob it's like a god send that he sees this boy with crazy potential who could very well succeed him. But when you get into super (his character actually regresses) he's just him from the cell saga, so there's no change, but there is change his character regressed and now he spends super relearning what he learnt before. I love Goku but Gohan would have been a more interesting mc in my opinion, but i honestly think Db should have just ended at Cell (narratively) it was the perfect ending and left the future up to the fans to speculate what could happen.

Goku’s character arc in buu, is realizing that he has to be the guy saving the earth, not leaving it to someone else. The exact opposite of cell saga goku’s mindset. Clearly you don’t love Goku and gohan if you can’t pay even the smallest bit of attention. He was not training uub to be his successor in the way that gohan was.

i think Super Saiyan 3 mightve worked better in this case: Goku, through his extensive training in Otherworld along with his divine body, gains an immense amount of strength/stamina in SSJ2 alone. Vegeta feels even more incentive to get Babidi's power up because he simply cannot keep up with Goku no matter what. Goku and Vegeta's fight significantly drains them both, leading Vegeta to still try, and fail, to self destruct Buu. Everything then continues, with Goku only contending with Majin Buu due to his unique physiology. Gotenks doesn't get SSJ3 either, only unlocking SSJ2 or even just staying in SSJ. When Gohan gets his potential unlocked, it draws out all the latent power within his Saiyan biology, allowing him to become the true embodiment of a Saiyan, aka SSJ3. Goku eventually either figures out SSJ3 on his own or is able to get his potential unlocked in another way (I prefer him achieving it on his own, so that when BoG rolls around, it's the idea of "The complete, perfected form of the battle spirit of the entire Saiyan race is nowhere near enough to contend with Beerus, and thus, divine power must be sought after." it gives SSJ3 a lot more narrative logic and just reason to exist beyond "well actually i coudlve always beat Buu but just decided not to because i *obviously* have to risk the world and my loved ones for them getting stronger"

Now that I actually think about it, there's aspects that are better. Either way, saying Beast's scene was overall better than Gohan's? Did we forget that Beast was a split second formation that literally skipped half of the actual physical changes??? Gohan's SSJ2 ascension was across the end of an episode and then had a moment where he had to really power up into it. Honestly, that alone just defeats the narrative. That being said, the narrative argument is only going to be similar. Gohan crashing out from 16 was a last straw, something that people really don't take into account. He managed to hold to his values even when seeing his family and friends being tortured in front of him, but seeing someone who values life in the same way as him be stripped so casually was the catalyst. Superhero's narrative has more direct meaning, it's more clear that Gohan's worried about Piccolo, Pan, and the Earth, but they both already have enough clarity. Topping the charts in that account doesn't really mean anything when Gohan's SSJ2 transformation A. inspired the Blanco form that inspired Beast, B. has more impact to the relative series as a form that any living Saiyan could obtain, and C. culminates the aspect of rage in the same way that beast does. Beast is his next step, and it's great and all, but Gohan's power multiplier was literally higher than SSJ2 itself. That's what ties Beast altogether. SSJ2 Gohan is Beast Gohan's daddy, and you have to hold that. It can't surpass itself without the plot involving Gohan in the same way it used to. By now, we all know it's up.

I think there was an interview where toriyama himself said that Gohan was supposed to take over after the cell saga, but toriyama didn’t want to get rid of Goku, with it being his all time favorite character he’s ever created. I think the whole thing with the dragon ball super movie is Toyotaro loves Gohan and wants him to be able to get his time since Toriyama changed the original outcome to its predecessor anime.

Take 1 is W though: Late reply, but I think the first take was solid and best from a creative writing and storytelling perspective. I don't think the counter-argument did anything to debunk what was said. Super feels like fan service with less adventure and more emphasis on insane powerscaling and endless transformations. Gohan having to carry the weight of the world on his shoulder gives the audience a new dynamic and the writers a whole new concept to work with. Have characters like Vegeta, Goku, Picolo and Krillin hang around because they're fan favourites and it draws viewers. But using/ building up characters like Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Uub would've been way more interesting. Uub has an interesting background story, Gohan has the burden of having to be a fighter, Goten can do the comic relief people loved in Goku, Yamcha and Krillin. Kid Trunks has the burden of not being Future Trunks as a viewer. Him being compared to Future by his father, others (and the viewers) could also work. Android 17 is actually a neat and cool inclusion, but also a great addition. In my opinion it's a better alternative to flanderization of characters and ridiculous powerscaling.

I kinda mess with the Cilvanis take or at least parts of it. I've always been an advocate for family man Gohan and think him not being outwardly strong and doing his own thing is fine. I just treat him like police officer Krillin, he is just chillin. I've never liked this back and forth of "you've been slacking, time to do some light training or get really angry to become the strongest again". Yes I know Gohan trained throughout Super but then how does he not know the ki signature of Piccolo when his 3 year old child can on the fly. He's definitely portrayed as rusty and practicing the Special Beam Cannon doesn't change that. I just feel like Gohan's not the right person to protect Earth even if he's the strongest and that's okay. You want a strong successor, Uub's on the way, he's just taking his sweet damn time. Hell with how they're writing Pan we might have 2. In my opinion while I like Super Hero, we didn't need Beast and we don't need Gohan to be strong.

Yeah no. Not only did Carthu point out how the same Goku that figured immediately out the flaws of the SSJ grade forms then would use this form without refining it like he did with Full Power SSJ in the Cell Saga, but it’s gets worse when you remember that Goku learned the Kaioken WHILE ALSO DEAD just like with SSj3, and it’s arguably worse flaws before he was even revived. Also you are telling me in the seven years he was dead he never once tried to refine the form of SSJ3 or master it? Not to to mention somehow never noticing the drain it gives on startup? Just come to life without any pretraining with it? Nope not buying it. Even if the afterlife gives infinite energy he should realize how much ki a move or transformation takes upon the body. You don’t suddenly lose the ability to sense energy or ki when you die. It get worse again when you remember that he learned the Spirit Bomb while also dead and it requires a lot of concentration of gathering positive life energy, (Genki), then merging it to a single point to use. It requires a precise ki control and ki sensing to use too. We even see him use it while training with King Kai. Heck with Kaioken Goku to learned to refine to use it to higher levels of it, then learned to use a transformation & combine it to make a new power up, and to further upon even that with SSBK. Face it SSJ3 is just flashy and for the “moment”. Plus its best move the Dragon Fist is noncanon.

I can get that. I really like SSG and think it was great for the beginning of the Dragon Ball resurgence that was Battle of Gods but it doesn't actually have a legit win (or any screentime) my thing is, the forms that don't get Ws and I think are kinda bad have other factors to that badness. Super Saiyan 3 just feels inefficient along with having horrible presentation with Goku trolling everybody with his search for a successor. Blue has the problem of being the defacto form and almost always feeling lack luster no matter what it does.

Honestly, there should not be a debate on what Migatte IS, because it's BOTH. It's just like Super Saiyan God, which is a shortcut to achieve Godly Ki, Toppo, for instance, can tap into it, but he doesn't need to transform. And truth to be told, it's not even necessary, as it was explained by Toriyama, THAT transformation was no longer needed, after the battle against Beers, because Gokū managed to make that power his own, and Vegeta, as it was explained in the fight against GO-GO-GO-GOOOOOOOOOOLDENNNN FRRRRRRRREEEEZA obtained Godly Ki without that. Which is also why we got the "Kami o koeta Saiya-jin" (or Saiyan Beyond God) which is basically Gokū and Vegeta tapping into God Ki without turning Red (The only reason why God is still around, is because Toyotarō is a DB Simp.) In fact, if you look at the manga, Whis is trying to teach Gokū how to tap into Migatte without transforming, which is the same exact thing as Saiyan Beyond God. And this was also confirmed by Toyotarō when he talked about the concept behind "True" Migatte no Goku'i, which was basically a way of showing that Gokū is getting close to master the technique without transforming, yet, the transformation is still the better choice because it's a shortcut that literally changes him in order to better grasp that power. Now that I think about it, it shouldn't even be considered a technique, if anything it's a mindset, it's nothing but impulsivity: you turn the brain off (to a certain extent) and leave everything to your autonomous reactions (muscle memory and reflexes).

SSJ3 being character regression for Goku is silly. It's not like he can never ever use any high cost form again just because of Grade 4, sometimes that's just the nature of a transformation and as long as he plays around it and understands its limitations, there is no problem with using a high drain transformation. His mistake comes in the form of failing to account for how becoming alive again would affect his body's ability to regulate SSJ3. Otherwise Goku seemed well aware of its drawbacks and was reasonably conservative with it. I don't think I've ever agreed with any of Carthu's SSJ3 takes, they are all too reach-y for me.

His logic completely disregards the fact that he didn't realize that the form had a ton of stamina drain because he was dead, and LITERALLY earlier in the video you even stated that he was looking for a successor, hence him leaving it up to the kids.

Hot take: Vegeta should not have lived in the Saiyan saga. Tell me how he survived a direct X4 Kaioken Kamehameha. He needed Galick Gun just to much Goku’s X3 Kamehameha. Which his power is 24000 (Because his power level was over 8000, not 9000 which would make Vegeta surviving even more plot wise.) And X4 would make Goku’s power level 32000. After this, Vegeta gets his tail cutoff by Yarjirobe (and remember this for later) and then gets hit with a spirit bomb which lost half its power. THEN, he gets crushed by Gohan’s Ozarrou form. Fuck plot, he’s living off of pure Toriyama’s meat.

I agree about Super Saiyan Blue. It was seriously rushed and Mastered too many times. Although. It makes sense with mastering both halves of their ki's to master it twice. The third time was stupid. I don’t understand the Trunks hate. Legit a good character isn’t just about how ooo he killed the main villain or did “something”. He literally came from the future to help and change the course of history. Literally none of these cool moments of characters past the namek saga would’ve happened without him going to the past. So he did “something” in the sense of helping the story to go forward. If you really want me to name some Trunks moments though. If you don’t count him killing Frieza and Cold or SAVING his timeline, he attempted to blast the androids away in Dr, Gero’s lab while everyone else just stood around and watched, he blasted vegeta away in order to stop semi-perfect cell, and overall he was just the sense of reason in the cell arc even though no one listened to him. I won’t go into movie moments since that’s not what the take was about.

He wasn't showing mercy to any Villain and he wanted the new generation to grow stronger and replace him and vegeta which Cell saga goku never did. This super saiyan 3 take is right cause he could use ssj2 on top of kaioken and gain a almost similar power and it would be much faster to transform into, even if it takes a lot of stamina super saiyan 3 does the exact same. At first I thought the 1st take was bad, but then I realized I was being emotional. All the maturing and everything that Goku needed to do was over after the Cell Saga. What lessons did he learn or grow from after it? Especially when you look at the consequences involved (he literally died). Do i think that means "yep! fraud MC" no absolutely not - but if this was another timeline where Gohan somebody else became the MC, we wouldn't be in "GASP! HERETIC" mode- cause be honest, it's cause it's Goku. MC's of other shit dont get this level of benefit of the doubt. Me personally, I liked the Saiyaman arc. DB had constant world-level threats to the point where it didn't really feel threatening anymore. Saiyan A and Saiyan B. Side note, I DON'T think Gohan was supposed to become the MC. I think the story was supposed to end and Gohan was supposed to take up the mantle in a cliffhanger way to keep us guessing after the story ended. EDIT I think Sage's counterpoint was weak cause those problems existed in the Cell saga too. The only difference is that there was only 1 successor to be obsessed with (Gohan) The man threw his entire match - lets not pretend he couldn't have had Gohan keep Cell occupied while he just does a spirit bomb. It's damn near a full proof plan. But no, he commit an even bigger eff up than those 7 you mentioned and straight up gives Cell a senzu. Manga or anime, if we're going off the lines, non-SSJ2 Gohan was supposedly stronger than SSJ Goku - to the point of being disappointed at Goku's power up. This successor plot point may begin in this saga, but let's not act like it just blooms into this big spiral of Goku searching and making mistakes (that '7 out of 8' shit is just not true. Goku fucked up in the Buu saga 5 times MAX). He just continues where he left off - that's why it's not a "development" or a change.

Hot take: GT Gokus character progression is better than Super Goku. Goku through all of Z developed more to not be so merciful, Frieza , he spared and he came back, Cell , the sensu bean fiasco is one thing but his sacrifice fix his mess of leting gohan fight cell and brought him to king kais. and Buu near the begining he pretty much for the first half looked for a successor. Then realized he still had to step up and kill kid buu. GT goku sticks with that development, He is still laid back but he will kill when it matters not giving enemys second chances. Baby dead. Super 17 , say what you want he knows there could have been good in him since 18 is good, but didn't jinx himself and killed him . and the shadow dragons he took out majority of them on his own.
