We used to have an amazing station cafe in Totnes. Little wooden hut that looked a bit like something a hurricane survivor might knock together as emergency shelter but inside, fantastic older gent who had spent a lifetime perfecting the ancient art of cooking bacon to to an unparallelled state of crispy deliciousness, his skill level was comparable to that of the martial arts of warrior monks who have been studying diligently, all day & night, since the age of four & can easily 'walk across the rice paper without leaving a mark' (grasshopper!). Also brilliant older lady who I will swear was personally tutored in cake making by the Heavenly Angels themselves, plus did the town a great favour by providing a safe place for all the school truants to take refuge. Sadly they are gone from us now & much mourned by the entire town (,or at least those of us who were fortunate enough to catch them before they departed to the great cookout in the sky). I knew the moment I saw my first purchase from the new cafe, a breakfast, complete with soggy bacon, soft sodden fried bread & incompletely cooked egg, sinking in enough rapidly cooling grease to happily float a barge. They don't care about food, or about the customer. They don't understand food. They don't know how to cook & so completely innocent are they of the culinary arts, so utterly bereft of any sense of how to make food that is actually enjoyable, that they do not have the slightest inkling, or the barest intimation that they do not in fact have any cooking skills or natural aptitude or appropriate sensibilities and should be under a court order not to go within a hundred metres of any kitchen & should be wearing tags that set off alarms & automatically call an armed response unit if they do in fact stray anywhere near a kitchen door. These people have not just taken jobs in a cafe but actually bought the lease. I despair. Why? If you cannot be bothered to make food thats enjoyable just stay at home please. Everyone knew, pretty much the moment the taxi drivers stopped eating at the station. Once I was forced to buy a sandwich from there, due to a sudden announcement that the train I was travelling on would not have any refreshments at all. I chose cheese because I thought they couldn't do much wrong to a chedder sandwich. I bought it hurriedly only to repent at my leisure once I was on the train. I should have known, when I saw that the cheese had a funny sweaty look. But I had nothing else to eat & a long journey ahead. I didn't think hard cheese was meant to be too vulnerable to going off. I should have known better. I was so so ill. Never again! Now I only buy items from that cafe that have been produced in a factory hundreds of miles away & tightly sealed long before they have come near the station. I appeal to people. Do not work with food if you do not care about it. It is, as your parents told you, not to be played with!
