🇲🇽 GUAYMAS, SONORA - Welcome to Part 16 of my 2022 Mexico Travel series! Last time, we were in the spectacular San Carlos, a beautiful, lesser-known Mexican beach location in the state of Sonora (although becoming increasingly popular with expats in Mexico or those thinking about moving to Mexico).
Guaymas is located just 25-30 minutes from San Carlos on the local bus. You can reach Guaymas from either Hermosillo or Ciudad Obregón with the bus company, Tufesa (around 2 hours either way).
Sonora is the home to seafood (mariscos) in Mexico and is well known for its CAHUAMANTA (a broth-like caldo dish with manta ray). Yes, I ate manta ray! It's definitely an acquired taste! Comida Mexicana (Mexican food) is truly top tier. Is this Mexico's best seafood? There's also some interesting architecture throughout, from the historic centre, downtown and elsewhere. Unfortunately due to knocking myself unconscious that morning (!), I couldn't cover as much ground as I wanted to, but I hope this video gives you at least a brief insight into Guaymas!
Yes there are great beach locations in Mexico - Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and so on, but you have to consider and Guaymas and San Carlos as alternative places to visit in Mexico for a beach vacation!

🇺🇸 I hope you liked Guaymas! Please listen to what I said in the video LOL. I almost broke my pelvis and knocked myself unconscious 2 hours before starting filming so clearly I was not in a good physical condition (10 days later and I am still having trouble walking). I have already filmed 2 videos in Hermosillo which are coming soon! Note that I did not 'miss out' Alamos - I just didn't want to go - I've already filmed many videos in magic towns and I would rather focus on places which interest me. I hope you understand!

Poor Guaymas. I lived there for 8 years in the 80's and 90's. Back then, shrimping was the engine of the local economy, but they overfished and everything started going downhill from there. After I left, the town got hit badly by 2 or 3 hurricanes and that caused a lot of devastation that they hardly recovered from. Add to that the fact that there's little to no investments to improve the local economy, and that many people leave town for lack of good-paying job opportunities, and Guaymas (one of the oldest ports in north México) has fallen into a cycle of dispair. It used to be a great place to visit in decades past. The locals need to do something about it and stop waiting for U.S. investors to rescue the economy by building more maquiladoras.

The fishermen monument is a Julian Martinez work. He was inspired on a local fisherman Celso Grajeda, who came from Colima state. In 1972 this monument was at Plaza Centenario's waterfront. Guaymas has a lot of interesting stories to tell. A great video !!! 👌👌👌🌺☺...

Nasty fall, l hope healing is taking place day by day David. You were disciplined keeping your video schedule but you managed to show the city in all its aspects from low income neighborhoods to the downtown area.. The setting is as impressive as San Carlos but it is more the the fishing, working city of the area though l think they still get some tourism. You did as good work as always showing what a place is all about while becoming an expert in walking under the hot Sonoran sun, l hope you are almost healed.

I am so sorry you got jacked up. I really enjoyed this video as well as your past ones through Mexico showcasing the not so glamorous sides of places. I agree the architecture of those buildings was very Eastern European. I like listening to your observations. Glad you didn't have a melt down but I might have eating the manta. I can't do the jiggle.

Good video man! I was born in Guaymas, grew up in Obregon, study in Hermosillo. I have family living there. You know some interesting facts. "Heroica de Zaragoza" was added for defending against filibusters and in honor to a general who defeated them. Also, before that, Americans temporarily invaded the port in the Mexican-American war. I don't like manta too much neither, although it should be good for paleo diet, so I can eat it. Once retired, I would like to move to San Carlos, although my wife wants riviera Maya. As a kid living in those places was very safe, now news make people scared. And you know, many news are partially true, since there are all types of agendas.... Keep making videos and stay safe, good traveling you are doing and knowing the world!

Sonora for life! Personally I would much prefer San Carlos to the Riviera Maya. I'm planning to have a break from Mexico for a year or so but San Carlos and Guaymas are top of my list to return to. I think I'd prefer to stay in Guaymas because I'm more of a city person but if I wanted to go to San Carlos now and again at least there's that regular and really convenient bus. Plus when I was there I found out El Pescadito originated in Sonora. How did I not know this all these years jaja

haha I was just mocking the American pronunciation. It annoys me how they pronounce 'Puerto' as 'Porta'. I'd ask a native Spanish speaker rather than mimicking an American or me. It's very difficult for me to do a Spanish R sound before a T or a D because of the close tongue placement. Like with Cordoba, I try to separate the word like 'Cor' and 'Doba' then put them together, seems to work well and can also help when trying to master rolled R sounds!

I am new on your channel and I havent read the comments to be honest, but at 17:24, that jelly thingy is not manta ray, its tuna's fin its well common to add it to the dish, but not everyone likes it due to the strong flavour, its more like to resemble the old dish that used to be prepared made out of loggerheads, anyways, thanks for visiting my country!

Well that's not wrong is it, that's what I described. THEY REPLACED IT WITH MANTA. I don't have to explain every minute detail about spellings of names. I don't just make things up, I know the different names because I researched this. Yet a typical Mexican can only see what is spelt out to their face and only focuses on criticizing...

Hi from the Edomex, I watched one of your videos and I wanted to ask something(I lost the video, Don't remember which one is) because you said that people from the north of Mexico, they don't identify themselves as mexicans but as Americans(from the USA) and I got socked, so would u like to make it more clear? I mean with more details about their point of view because I'm pretty sure that even the center of Mexico has even more similarities with the US, I don't think places like Sonora or Nuevo León have the same amount of American(USA) brands as CDMX or pretty much the entire center states and the majority of the Northern states are more like "Ranchero" "Cowboy" plus they love Banda "mexican genre" and that type of way of living started in Mexico first, I mean they look and sound more like the typical stereotype about mexicans than me lol. PS: Ur videos are very cool and entertaining.

Hey Ricardo! That was in the Obregon video and I was referring to a few comments I'd had on specifically Los Mochis and Culiacan videos, so maybe it's a Sinaloa thing! (also a few Instagram messages). Unfortunately there wasn't much more detail than what I said, in that Sonorans and Sinaloans identify as that rather than Mexican, or even more American overall. Perhaps it's because of how Sonora and Sinaloa are seen in terms of reputation? I find that some southern Mexicans can look down on those from the north. Many northerners state that just because they have less in the way of Aztec/Mayan or colonial culture, that doesn't make them any less Mexican. That's interesting about US brands, I have always felt that northern cities like Torreon or Chihuahua are far more Americanised in that sense! Particularly with the commercial corridors! Hopefully I can touch on this subject in the future. Also, thanks for this type of insightful comment. It's exactly what I love and is what the comments section should be for, to learn more from each other! Gracias amigo!

@@davidostrowski679 thanks for the answer and I get your point, I agree that some northern cities in MX, don't have many colonial arquitechture or aztec/mayan influence, they have their own indigenous groups as the rest of the country and since they are so far from the capital, their growth as important cities is more a recent thing so, some of that cities have this feeling of industrial places I don't know how to explain properly(my english is so bad lol) and there's too, the fact that southern states of the USA, used to be part of "La Nueva España" and then of Mexico, so some wood constructed buildings or different style of catholic churchs where built by canadian, german or another european migrants that used to work in the mining in Mexico but there's some little hints of that in all of Mexico, so that is more european(nordic) arquitechture than "American" but people tend to think that was first invented by the USA(U've been in a lot of places in Europe so u migh know what I mean)..I recommend u to visit places like "Thalpujahua" in Michoacán or "El Oro" in Edomex and u will see what I'm talking about.. there's the mennonit migration in the North of Mexico aswell, so there's some cities influenced by mennonites and their way to build their towns, is more "minimalistic" instead of the "typical mexican" style, but as u said, that doesn't make them less mexican, that is the beauty of this country(the variety) and I agree with the commercial corridors, I think they would be similar to places like San Diego but yeah, It migh only be ur perception about the brands of it might be real in a sense but my point is, Querétaro is full US fast food chains, even the HEB has presence there and international brands tend to open first in places like CMDX or Toluca than in Northern cities like Monterrey or Juárez, brands like Saks fifth Avenue(which is very american) or clothing names like Tommy Hilfiger, the access to Stella McCartney or Tory Burch products are pretty much less easy in the north and in my personal opinion(but obviously sine they are neighbours of the US, there's american brands with no presence in the center or south parts of MX), I don't think the "not that mexican" sentiment could be due to the fact that they are very far from the CDMX, so if they want to make a more "wide shopping time", it's easier for them to go to the US for doing that plus nlt a lot of them travel inside their their own country(MX) so they don't know the reality, because I'm pretty sure that they are waaaay more similar to the the rest of mexicans than to "estadounidenses" so I got shock when u said what they told u and refering the perception of central and south mexicans about the North, is that in the last couple decades, that region used to have the reputation of being "very dangerous" but that changed a lot since nowadays, all of Mexico is supossed to be "dangerous" haha but yeah it's an insteresting topic and it would be very interesting to watch a video with some interviews to nomal people in the streets and to know what they think about it, because I think those that told u that they feel "more american" just want to seem "interesting and unique" Lol, besides all of that, I recently discovered ur channel and I find it very cool and informative, keep the good work.
