Update March 3, 2023: Many Huel customers, us included, recently received word that they will be discontinuing the peanut butter flavor. Very sad news for us since in our opinion that was the best flavor by quite a large margin. There are still plenty of other good flavors, but just be aware you won't be able to buy the peanut butter flavor after June or July I believe. Original Comment: Hope you guys enjoy this video even though it's a bit different from what we normally do! We just thought it would be fun and interesting experiement, but we would never recommend that anyone does a major diet change without easing into it and/or talking to a professional. Before this challenge, Jason was consuming 1-2 meals of Huel per day consistently so as not to shock his system. :) Also, even though it's in the video I'll say it here too: this video was not sponsored by Huel!

This drink saved my life. It helps a lot with my eating disorders. Due to not eating for days at a time, I have no energy to even stand in the shower. I get nausea and start coughing and breathing heavy. Have to take breaks between small tasks. So I can't even stand long enough to cook. This only perpetuates the problem, As because it takes too much effort to cook and too much energy to even stand, I just don't eat. I nibble on things. My eating disorder started shortly after These girls on youtube started bullying me and calling me fat. The process of putting food in my mouth and chewing is not enjoyable. I have plenty of almond milk to make Huel with. It's high in nutrition and low in effort. So I get to keep myself healthy while I'm fighting this eating disorder and trying to get my diet back on track.

Thing is, I ordered the Black version of their powders and started using it for breakfast. Two scoops, add 50% water and 50% oat milk (gluten-free), and that just gets me through my days. Not just a bit, but better. I have more focus, I have more energy, I feel happier, I feel content, and it makes me feel healthy. The difference with me is quite extreme perhaps, because I never ate breakfast (or lunch) at all because I'm a lazy SOB, and if I did eat something it would be a sandwich with cheese or something (I'm Dutch, sue me). The contrast is extreme to say the least. Perhaps I could accomplish the same with a balanced diet and a healthy breakfast and lunch, but: A. that would take a lot of time; B. that would require regular shopping; C. that would require me to keep track of my supplies; D. that would require more dish washing; E. that wouldn't be nearly as complete as what Huel promises;. F. it would cost a lot more money per serving. I still eat a normal dinner every day. Also a freshly made and healthy and pescetarian meal, 4x a week, that I just need to warm up. Full of healthy ingredients, too. And then once a week I eat in a restaurant, once a week I just order in something (usually sushi), and the last day of the week I have my cheat day and anything goes. Huel won't replace my entire diet, but it'll stay for breakfast and lunch for sure. Just 2 scoops and 10 seconds of shaking and I'm good until dinner.

Would you recommend it for weight loss (incorporated with exercise of course?)
@mahadevovnl2 жыл бұрын
@@HotTakeAndy Weight loss is the difference between energy in and energy out. Huel won't help you out in any way if you still consume too many calories. I'd consult a dietician, drink more water, stop drinking alcohol, and avoid sugars. And even then, if you eat too much, you'll gain weight.
@UltraPikmin2 жыл бұрын
@@HotTakeAndy As long as your calorie intake is less than your calories used/burned by living/exercising etc, you'd see results. Huel would come in handy by having all the vitamins, minerals and so on to keep you healthy and feeling good. As Maha said below, lowering alcohol intake and sugars (if applicable) also helps a lot. If you were to combine exercise with just Huel / Huel + Healthy other meals + healthy snacks, you'll definitely see results, as long as your calorie intake isn't higher than what you're using. However, if you were consuming the same amount of calories as you're burning, but still exercising well and having a healthy nutrition going, you'll see bodily changes in performance, more muscle and less fat, it just won't necessarily drop those weight numbers, but still affect you beneficially
@stone_pilot2 жыл бұрын
@@HotTakeAndy A serving of huel is only 400 calories. FDA recommends 2000-2500 calories as general nutritional advice depending on gender. If you go and get fast food, say, a burger, fries, and a soda that's about 1100 calories. So you would have to eat fast food twice to hit that target. In my experience it's actually quite difficult to eat too many calories unless you're trying really hard. An egg only has 90 calories, so the classic eggs + bacon + toast is like 500 cals. Just 1/4 of your RECOMMENDED goal. And most people skip breakfast. Eat homemade lunch and dinner? You probably won't even be at 2000 cals. The easiest way to hit 2000 calories on accident is eating lots of sugary stuff or eating lots of snacks. Even among people who are overweight you would be surprised to find that their calorie intake is not as high on average as you would expect. The issue is the way your metabolism reacts to sugar, which makes your body more likely to hold fat. Once you're overweight the cycle feeds itself. The easiest method I've found to hit your calorie targets is to skip breakfast and if you snack make it something low calorie like baby carrots.

Thank you for this video. I've been using Huel as a meal replacement for things like Breakfast and Lunch, sporadically over the last year or so... for times when I am pushed for time, or so tired at the end of the work day that I can't be bothered to cook. However I've never considered huel as a total replacement, because I have a wife and daughter(teen) who have their own personal thoughts on a liquid only diet. I did try a 1 week trial of "only huel" but the family situation made it very difficult to achieve (normal cooked meals needed preparing anyway), and in fact I only managed 4 days before admitting defeat and joining my family with their routine. I'm in the armed forces, and I have a period away from family/home coming up so I've been looking up case studies regarding huel only diets. One big push factor in this case is the financial implications. My family at home will be spending almost identical amount of money on the weekly grocery shop as if I were there, so sustaining myself whilst away will be an additional cost to our family income. I will have limited cooking facilities, and likely no refrigerator to keep fresh food from spoiling. There will be a food hall with prepared meals for me, but even with that facility available to me, Huel will be able to give me the neccessary nutrition, whilst also maintaining my own fitness, at a fraction of the cost of cooking or eating in the food hall. Average cost for a breakfast is between $5-10, lunch is roughly the same at $7-12 and evening meal is closer to $10-15.... this is PER DAY. I worked out that if I were to limit myself to the absolute cheapest meals available in the food hall, I would be spending $22 a day or as much as $37. Over a 30 day period that's between $660 and $1110 per month, just on food, for MYSELF. Plus there's absolutely no way that the food hall meals will have the neccessary nutrition. On a combination of Huel Powder 3.0 and Hot n Savoury, that financial implication drops massively to under $300, with the added bonus of being much healthier and nutritious than whatever food hall meal I decide to eat. This video has pushed me over the edge in favour of at least trying out Huel for 30 days, then we will see how I get on with balancing food hall meals with Huel as a way forward. Thanks again.

Everyone has different caloric requirements, but the proportion of nutrients is obviously always the same, so basically you *will* be overdosing on some nutrients. In some cases this is completely fine, like water-soluble vitamins that you will just pee out, but fat-soluble vitamins might pose a problem. The powder really should be split up into two components, one that forms the bulk of the calories and whatever vitamins and nutrients that it's okay to receive in excess, and another component that forms the basis of the other nutrients which need to be more closely monitored. This way each person could combine the two components in the proportion that makes sense for them and their caloric needs.

It’s great to see your opinion on Huel. I usually don’t give myself enough time to cook breakfast before work in the mornings so I like to blend a quick smoothie 2 scoops of Huel, a handful of spinach, 1 big chonk of peanut butter, 1 cup frozen blueberries, 1 spoonful of honey, and a nice combination of hemp, flax and chia seeds. The Huel is WAY cheaper than protein powder and gives me the energy I need before climbing. But there’s no way I could see myself going on a full Huel diet.

Hi, I was wondering how much water you drank each day, not counting all the huel drinks? This would help me a lot figuring out how much is healthy to drink aside from my own huel mixes. Also another question, we are now 2 years further, do you still use Huel?
@EmpressKadesh10 ай бұрын
How much water you need depends on your weight and if it is hot and you are sweating a lot. Google says 1 quart per 50lbs of body weight on an inactive day. At 120lbs I try to drink at least 2 quarts a day. It is easy to keep track with a Ball jar. I saw an article saying a woman died from drinking 2 quarts of water all at once so don't try that. In the Army they would have us chug a 1 quart canteen before bed every night and no one died so I don't go past that. Personally I notice that my skin starts breaking out when I'm not hydrated so the state of your skin is a good indicator. If it looks unhealthy you aren't getting enough water.

I started Huel this week to replace my dinner during work hours, I’ve had issues with heartburn and gut health since contracting Covid and Huel seems to be a trigger, after doing a bit of research it seems it’s quite common that Huel is causing acid reflux at a guess it may be that that the liquid is diluting my stomach acid causing my asparagus not to close as most heartburn is actually caused by low stomach acid not high but that’s a total guess. Just something to be weary off if any heartburn sufferers are planning to switch to Huel.

This video reminded me of the company called Soylent when they first launched their experiment video prob like 10 years ago and I remember they were having some health issues and I didn`t think much after. Surprised how far this powder thing got tho. I was a bit worried whether you had enough fiber since I imagine drinking a ton of liquid would make you have watery stool, but it seems like you didn't have problems sooo I'm definitely interested to add this to my diet in the future as supplements!

Huel actually has a ton of fiber in it, 25% the daily amount per serving. It’s also extremely common for people to not eat enough fiber, so you’re almost certainly eating more fiber on Huel than you wer before

you'll poop a lot more and your farts will be worse for a while. after 2-4 weeks your stomach will be used to getting the right amount of fiber. most people don't get enough fiber so you'll be okay.

Question. If your BMR was ~2800 calories a day, how many meals of Huel would you have each day, given that each meal/shake is 400 cal? Is it as simple as saying you had Huel 5-6times a day?

i only ever do one bottle of huel in the morning, and thats it for huel, light lunch and light supper, works a treat, the huel in the morning keeps me fuel almost the entire way through the day, the light lunch tops me up and the light supper is because i get better sleep with food in my stomach, i feel that my way of using it is a much more viable way to go, it makes more sense and doesnt overload the body with nutrients

thank you for this. I've been trying Soylent (to those reading this, AVOID Soylent, their company is just horrible) for about a month and they refuse to get their ordering issues straightened out which is their biggest complaint from customers over years - they refuse to be cooperative - so today after your video I ordered mine Huel. I loved powered food form, works for me and helps me mentally and physically as I'm a jogger want the best nutrient possible while maintaining everything else. Thanks again for your video

I'm going to order some Huel after watching many videos and trying the ready-made shake bottles. I will likely only have it once a day for a meal that I don't have time or energy to make from scratch. Anyone with IBS probably shouldn't have too much Huel in a day due to the high fibre content!

I have been looking at this because I have Crohn’s disease and due to surgery I don’t absorb all of the nutrients I consume. I also like going out for long scenic walks, and photography, there have been many times were I run out of energy on these trips. This usually happens when I’m alone, if my friends are with me they usually spur me on, which is great but I usually pay those consequences days later. I also thought of this because my appetite is poor, usually through fear of needing the toilet, but a lot of the time I’m just not hungry.

Great stuff! Thank you for sharing. Which specific Huel products were you using and which specific products worked best for you? Huel lists quite a few product options on their site, ranging from Huel Daily Greens powder, to Black Edition, to Ready to Drink, Complete Protein, etc…so I’m just curious what your Huel dietary regimen was comprised of. On a side note, I added several Huel products to my daily diet roughly 3 months ago. This was purely by chance as I randomly stumbled across the product while watching Steven Bartlett’s terrific interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson. Steven’s passionate endorsement piqued my interest, so, I did a bit of research and decided to give it a go. I purchased a month supply of “Huel Daily Greens” and Huel Ready-to-Drink (Banana Flavor). The first month went so well that I’ve continued taking both on a daily basis for the past 90 days or so. In the three months since integrating Huel Daily Greens and Ready-to-Drink into my daily routine, I’ve lost 24 lbs of bad weight. I’ve never felt better or more energetic.

Just ordered some on a whim after seeing someone praise the taste/flavors of Huel over Soylent. I really enjoy Soylent (Original) but the con is that the pre-made bottles are expensive and the powder only comes in 2 flavors, amazing (Original) and nasty (Cocoa). The price is pretty crazy at almost 2x Soylent's though...

Something that’s also worth considering is food intolerances you may not even know about and how different huel products feed into that. For example, i get on fine with their powder, but their bars have added inulin (a dietary fibre) which i am intolerant to, so they gave me terrible cramps like you described. 🙃
@Simplyputme2 ай бұрын
The thing about huel powder is that you reach 100% daily recommended value of all your micros at just 2 servings a day with 5 servings to reach a 2000 calorie diet. So I think its great for supplementing for 1 or 2 servings a day, but having regular food for the rest of your calories.
@MetalCooking6662 жыл бұрын
The interesting point about what the dietitian says, as so many dietitians and nutritionists do, is that the “negative” comments on why she prefers whole food don’t really have anything to do with nutritional content. She says she just likes her oats. I’m not saying this as a criticism, but more to highlight that criticisms of Huel seem to be based on the lack of pleasure eating it compared to “real” food, which is subjective. The rest of the video hits the nail on the head for me as Huel makes the tedious parts of sports nutrition way easier.

This was what I needed. I am going to do the same challenge. thanks for your sharing! How many times did you drink Huel per day? I need to loose some fat and build muscle. Any tips?
@yercules Жыл бұрын
My tips would be to drink meal replacements only during the day and have a regular meal in the evening. So there's less chance of going to the bathroom at night because of a high water intake. Besides the obvious benefits of a regular healthy meal it's also mentally satisfying so it's something to look forward to and fall asleep more easily. The amount you to drink and eat can be calculated roughly with an online calorie calculator. The ratio of macronutrients is also important depending on your specific goal. You can also track your food intake with a nutrient tracker (I use Cronometer). But it's not necessary if you're sure you're roughly on target. Good luck!
@AmirNickname3 жыл бұрын
I also 'eat' something similar (jimmy joy), mainly because I'm lazy but it's also nice to know you get all the vitamins and minerals on a daily basis (used to have a deficiency and that was not fun I can tell you!). Also, I used to eat A LOT more than my girlfriend, but now we eat roughly the same amount and I just supplement it with shakes. Works for me, and I think the idea of a healthy and convenient alternative to unhealthy snacks will appeal to more people :)

Love Huel, lost weight, got rid of most of my extra Sugar intake and just feel better a have more energy during sport. The one thing I absolutely hate is the bags and the scoop, send a complaint letter to Huel detailing the mess they cause when preparing the next drink, just change to plastic jars that recycle easily. Recommended to a ton of colleagues already.

I’m no climber but I went on the huel diet because I’m no cook and I’m also lazy to do so. When I wake up and go do my workouts in the morning I would get hungry before work but also tired of eating fast food for lunch so I tried this and with my morning workouts and huel for lunch I lost a lot of weight I would only eat dinner when I get home and real food and made fast food much more pleasant on the weekends since I would stop eating that during lunch on weekdays. I think it’s a great substitute for weight loss if you’re also working out but wanna be lazy to spend your free time playing video games or other things.

I appreciate your work put into this video! I’ve been considering supplementing my diet with a complete nutrition food such as this, mostly for convenience at the crag or after a long day. When you say that you’re continuing to use it, what is your use case? Outside the house or at home? Start or end of the day? Some clarity on this would help greatly!
@HoopersBeta3 жыл бұрын
I have it twice a day (mid morning and early afternoon) and blend it with ice, water, and unsweetened almond milk, so it’s about 900 calories a day worth of Huel. The rest of my calories I get from making regular meals for breakfast and dinner. On climbing days/trips I have about the same amount or more Huel if I’m feeling lazy about making regular food. I believe Jason generally consumes more than me (possibly over 1500 calories) while at work and on climbing days, but I don’t know the exact numbers. My favorite flavors are chocolate mixed with berry, chocolate mixed with peanut butter, and salted caramel. :) - Emile

Huel is not something a person should live off of, alone. I typically eat two scoops of Huel Hot and Savory per day to replace breakfast, on the way to work, and eat normal food for lunch and/or dinner. I used to eat cereal for breakfast, and not even the good kind (cocoa pebbles, cocoa puffs, etc.). But after replacing it with Huel, I've had more energy in my mornings, and the two scoops lasts me until a little bit past lunch. I think it would be a bad idea to completely switch to Huel for all meals, unless you're a vegan. Huel is all plant-based products, so making such a drastic dietary shift, when your body is used to eating meats like chicken and beef, is not good thinking. You'll shock your body, and that's never healthy.
@wills7817 Жыл бұрын
What you have said sounds more based on an idea, rather than something solid. What is wrong with shocking your body? Huel (it seems) is nutritionaly complete. So, if you are missing nothing, what "shock" can cause any issue. Your gut biome will change over time. That I understand, so suddenly 100% Huel may cause havoc initially but beyond that, it seems a total package. * I am not a vegan. I do not work for Huel. 😁
