Ever wondered what would happen if you tried to walk in a completely straight line across an entire country? No? Well i did. I thought about it a lot in fact, and in the winter of 2018/19 I decided i'd give it a go.
The country i chose to traverse was Wales. 33 miles of mountains, farmland, lakes, rivers, and forests, and just the right amount of human activity and natural hazards to ensure regular doses of paranoia and pain.
If i were to succeed, i would surely be the first recorded person to carry out such a feat, acquiring the accolade of having walked the shortest distance across Wales in the process.
Would i make it all the way to the Mawddach estuary at Penmaenpool? and would i actually be able to stay glued to the line at all times? or would i have to sacrifice a few metres in order to avoid being seriously injured, or worse, confronted by an angry welsh farmer?
Hit the like button and subscribe for first dibs on the next episode.

@GandalfGreyhame
@GandalfGreyhame Жыл бұрын
It's honestly insane how special this series is. There's just something about it... Even though it's only 3,5 years ago it feels so nostalgic. His other adventure series are brilliant as well, but nothing really comes close to this (except maybe How not to travel Europe). His later straight-line missions are more calculated and serious efforts, which I think is completely fine and only natural since he becomes better and more determined to actually complete it, but you really can't beat the innocent adventurous feeling of his first attempt

Actually I don't think it is cool to damage the private property (fences for example) of the landowners. Just because he want to cross the country in a straight line not even fully through the video and already saw damaged fences which can be crucial since often they are there to fend off wild life for the animals & owners protection. Also damaging several hedges while at least one broke half of and it takes years to grow them, not cool in my opinion.

Such a great idea to cross a country in a straight line. Lovely to see it done, and on such a scale. 40 Years ago (when I was young :-) I used to do this too, but on shorter stretches. In urban areas I walked to straightest lines, across railways, climbing over fences and through back gardens. Even through an open-air swimming pool. First time was mid winter and all water frozen, so that was easy. Later I tended to do it at night, because there was a lot of private property to cross. The world was/felt like a more relaxed place back then. I cannot imagine doing it nowadays. But in rural areas it can be done, and I'm enjoying Tom's journey very much.

I really want to do that - run across Kentucky in a straight line (though not over crops) and give myself a 1/2 kilometer on each side. I think about what used to be called 'steeple chasing'. It should be revived. Glad you had fun. I run on trails and hope to spend a long weekend running like that.

@Alfie Dixon How is a sense of humor, which undeniably is something that Brits have different than say, Americans, a stereotype? I wasn't even saying that like a bad thing, I think it's the best type of humor that my family and a lot of people here in Poland also use. The dry, often dark, sarcastic humor is called the British humor.

I feel you on point 3. Have helped friends and family on farms before and they have a lot to do. Most of this seems harmless, but it is vexing. But then again, the logistics of doing this the "right" way would make this impossible, and a world where people don't skirt the rules now and then would be terribly boring.
