I don't think he realized that. I think if he did he would have finished it anyway. This man has literally never given up on anything, as long as he knows it's possible. And to be fair it's hard to know that it is possible. I would've given up too. I did see that part of his body flew over and landed in the finish the first time he got there, but I don't think he did. Maybe he was looking at something else IRL while restarting the level, idk.
