The Honda CT70 (or the Dax as it's known in the wider world) has a lot of unique details that have made this little bike so iconic. One of those details is the folding handlebars that allowed the bike to be stowed in the back of a car. Now... with the tall sissy bar and long forks, MY bike isn't fitting in any trunks, but I want to keep as many of these peculiar details as I can. That means, taller stainless steel folding handlebars are in the works!
First, I bend up some 7/8" stainless steel tubing to form the two bars themselves. Then I machine some threaded inserts to be welded inside the bars, so they can bolt to the mount on the forks. Finally, I machine the 'keys' that allow the bars to lock in the up or down position when bolted in place. They get welded to the bars as well.
All in all, not too bad of a project, but these days even the small ones take me a while! Going back to a day job means I can afford lots of cool toys again, but it does cut down on shop time. Don't think I'm complaining, I'm just trying to figure out how it all fits together.
Let me know what you think about the direction my CT70 mini bike chopper is taking!
