That's why I like to play in the dark a lot. It forces me to learn the fretboard by feel at an entirely different level. I have to be able to visualize it in space. And know each fret "by name"

That's something I'll need to try ... play guitar in total darkness! I have a blindfold for sleep during the day. Wear it and you see nothing!! Must try. Good suggestion. 👍

That was intense and beautiful and countless other complimentary adjectives. Loved it! And will watch again for sure. And actually, I do DO this sometimes (not as masterfully) and will more now. Thank you! Playing naked in the dark is my favorite!! Highly recommend. And the song you just wrote as a result is magnificent! I do hope you include it on your next album! REALLY GOOD! I really love your ethereal gritty tones!!!!

When I have a song written I can do this but when I’m creating I always look. Maybe I’ll give it a try for my next song. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ha! Bill, I'm catching up on your last few videos tonight and this one made me smile. I should state that I totally get the message behind your performance. Playing bass in bands for many years I've always tried to look out at the audience and not too often at the neck. I have a tendency to look at my feet when concentrating (I don't play shoegaze!), therefore, it takes a bit of effort to look up. Not helped now that I'm an ambient guitarist looking at a bloody pedalboard all the time! However, what made me smile is your staring into the camera. One of my oldest friends I played in bands with for many years, a guitarist. Would, and still does, stare at me like a rabbit in headlights whenever we jam or write. It was quiet off-putting in the early days, but I had to get used to it because it's his thing to do! He playes like a demon too. It is a valuable skill to develop.

Good Friday afternoon, great musical performance. PS, the Joyo JGE-01 Infinite Sustainer tested by you was delivered to me today with additional effects, I only tested it for +- 2 hours, but I already like it very much. It was tried in PB with effects from EHX, at the beginning of this I saw your Mel9, nice effect, I have it in PB too. Thanks again for the inspiration and I wish you a nice weekend. Greetings Pavel CZ.👍👍👍

You crack me up, Bill. “Crap, I looked.” As if that somehow disqualifies you for a prize. 😊 The intensity of your stare matched the intensity of the music, though. Good suggestion.

Question for you Bill. Not sure exactly how to phrase this, but there’s this idea I learned about long ago, of “looking without grasping.” Or the opposite of that might be “looking with hungry eyes.” Hopefully those expressions make some sort of sense. My question is that evoke you’re playing and looking out, are you like “eyes open but looking inward,” or soft focus on middle space, or perhaps seizing the audience by the lapels with energetic eye beams? Perhaps some, none, or all of these? Curious to see what you have to say. 😉

Your hands will come up with new and interesting things to play if your eyes let them, I think it leads to being able to compose for the guitar inside your head. Bach could improvise two and three part fugues and I suspect he could do it blindfolded.

Interesting take! I wonder, what ways did you build the self confidence to share your art or craft your KZbin persona talking and playing to a camera that is?

My fav thing to do when playing live is to pull out my elbow and then scan the audience for the next 90 seconds. Always several people that ask the person they are with I am doing. The conversations I imagine are inspiration to my playing. I am such a nerd…

I’ve read that Robert Fripp practices in a dark room to ensure he doesn’t depend on watching his fingers. Fripp gonna Fripp, after all. As a harper, my ability to do that is limited.

You're having a laugh! I've done a daily practice of 2100 scales, by playing each scale in 4 different places over 2 octaves, 5 different places all of the same pitch, over 1 octave, then a 3 octave variation. Each in all 15 keys for every major scale, natural minor scale, harmonic minor, melodic minor, jazz melodic minor, augmented, diminished, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, locrian, Pentatonic major, Pentagon minor, and blues scales. Then the same for about 1000 arpeggios. With many cigarette breaks, it took about 2 hours. And on average sightseeing notation for about 6 hours a day. In my spare time once, I read ( played ) a 400 page jazz book. Retired professional musician and examiner for London College of Music.
