Hi Sean. I have been enjoying many of your videos over the last few months. I live near Vancouver Canada. For close to a century The Mickey Finn has been a popular pattern here for both cutthroat trout and coho salmon in the fall months in many local rivers and on Vancouver Island. While tied with bucktail, it's also tied with Calf tail, polar bear or synthetic fur. Usually a few strands of pearl crystal flash are added as a wing topping. Story is the fly originated in Quebec well over 100 years ago and moved into the eastern US quickly where it was called The Langevin after Charles Langevin, who is credited with developing it. When angling writer John Alden Knight went fishing with fellow writer Greg Clark of Ontario, Clark said the fly was such a danger to trout it should be called "The Mickey Finn", a drugged alcoholic drink delivered by crooks to victims they intended to rob. The name stuck I got this story from the Global Flyfisher article on the Mickey Finn.

@@SeánWoodsFishing Out here in New Brunswick, Canada, we use it in the spring for Atlantic salmon kelts. It is also effective on the striped bass that are ravenously overtaking our salmon rivers.

@@SeánWoodsFishing Yes, a striped bass on a fly is fun, especially a twenty pounder, but it's not a salmon! We're allowed to keep three in our possession and some people say they prefer the taste to salmon (which is 100% catch & release here), so there is that. But they are here in such numbers that some days there's not much challenge and you can get one on almost on every cast. Take a look at them spawning on the, once famous for its salmon, Miramichi River. They must devour everything they can get their jaws on! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqqUe3isbLB0Zsk

Best used in dark water after storms , or sparsely tied in shallow waters .. deadly for fall coho on the beach on dry line, long tippet

as a kid I used to make stupid ridiculous flies... and the fish would bite. Lots of yellow orange and red. No idea why they bit my fly but I'm thankful.
