Now you should make the $40 single house out of "trash!"

I purchased the 3D four pack myself, as I'm the reverse from you - I enjoy the painting aspect more than the crafting part (mainly because I'm crap at measuring and cutting), and got really good results from them. I did find the shingle thing to be a bit odd as well, but ignored it in favor of being able to bust out a small village in little time.

I like having interiors with a lot of my terrain...mainly because while I use them with RPG use, I also play a variety of wargames and skirmish games

I use foil on my foam to give it a stucco (ish) texture, but I lean heavily on the paintbrush for the swirls and the trowel marks. Finish it with a light sepia wash and it looks pretty good.

Great video! I do 3D printing, but I always wondered what the 'pre-printed' stuff off amazon was like

Not sure if anybody else mentioned this but I just got a couple of these myself and they came with an instruction sheet suggesting you use Rust-Oleum 2 in 1 Filler and Sandable Primer to get rid of the print lines. Think I'll give that a try.

I have 2 of the ones from the 4 pack, it came as a gift. I recognize some of its flaws but it works for terrain. I'd love to craft some buildings but I'm limited in space currently.

I have two sets of those $10 buildings and only plainted them with my airbrush. For me the time savings was well worth it. They admitedly look pretty mediocre, but they do the trick on the table for my group.

I think those 4 for 40 houses are totally worth it. The amount of time it saves for people on limited time and/or beginners seems good to me. 20 min to fix the roof on that one isn't a big deal. Light stipple of stucco texture work on the four should be as easy as any totally scratch build one. One small wire brush and you've got fast wood texture. This is totally worth it to me, I'm thinking of ordering at least two sets. (Time and limited work space is my demon, this helps with both of those.) Good video, thanks!!!

I've 3D printed some cottages in different pieces like what you bought and have eventually glued them all together as well, lol.

i happened to buy exactly the same 4 pack, and used Blck Magic Mod Podge to base, hoping to cover some of the printing lines, and it worked great! used stacco acryl pant to (with sand in it) and covered th eugly shingles with teddy fur, for the looks of thatch....looks good, not awsome, but good. 😃 yours are great! so i have to raise the bar now 😝

I enjoyed the video. My brain automatically went to texture paste for the stucco, but nothing is going to fix those square shingles.

Id be curious to see you make the 4 house set look “good”. Buy a new set then use a dremel to ding up the shingles, use some glazing putty to hide the layer lines, add some grout to make the stucco better, etc.

I 3d print my own, so never pay those prices. But the difference for me would be the $10 houses are more wargaming terrain, rather than a D&D terrain, you look at them differently when you play. That said, if you wanted a large village, a whole lot of cheaper houses with a few "hero" houses thrown in would be more economical, either in $ paid, or time to print if doing it yourself.

I have seen a roof that looked almost exactly like that square shingled building. It was a mass produced tin roof from, I think, the 1910s or 1920s. Each line of 'shingles' was a five or six foot strip.

Interesting. I'd love to see a comparison done with a resin printed house instead - the textures are world's apart from FDM printing, and it doesn't have the layer lines that you get with that type of printing either. That said I don't know what the cost would be like when bought through a 3rd party, since I print my own.

I believe the simplest of the 4 pack you bought came from a pack of stl that were meant to printed at 6mm scale. That would explain the extreme lack of detail.

The 3d printed stuff on amazon isn't half bad, I would always suggest going to Etsy instead simply because the amazon stores are just mass produced free files, and Etsy is at least supporting something closer to your "local artist" type deal. To put it into context, since some of the costs behind 3d printing are a bit of an enigma - a spool of filament is about 30-40 bucks, and you can likely get 3-4 of those $40 houses out of one spool, or 12-14 of those smaller houses out of one spool. So there is definitely a markup involved when buying online or etsy, but its not a horrible investment by any stretch - especially if the alternative is time you don't have (my curse) to craft yourself, or money to buy your own 3d printing set up.

I actually just got a value box from EnderToys today. It was about $30 for a box of misprints and imperfect prints. I got two of the cottages you showed as well as a bunch of other scatter. Honestly if you ordered one it would probably make a solid unboxing video.

Drew has actually talked with me about that. He bought one of those as well and got one of the cottages from the four pack. He said he honestly couldn’t find any fault with the stuff and got some nice scatter terrain in it. Biggest bummer was there was some kind of watch tower type thing that was incomplete. But that video is def gonna go on the list!

@@StorycraftSociety Nice! Yeah I would say my only "flawed" pieces were these little scatter mushrooms, think underdark shrooms basically. They had excess plastic around the stems that I had to peel off. That was about it.

3d printing has come a long way the results can be amazing. The models you purchased was from an FDM printer and frankly you craft WAY better than that. The $40 dollar house was way better in every way and you could have gone to town on it but for a video showing what the average person could do you still made it shine. You should check out what some of the high end buildings on a resin printer look like.

TIP: When priming your larger 3d printer or foam craft products and models, (like houses and such...) don't prime in black! When you try to put yellow over black primer, it will, even after multiple yellow coats, look green! Prime buildings in a light brown, light gray, or white primer! You'll cover the primer with far less crafting paints. Maybe that's 1 reason why you hate painting so much... you make it far harder on yourself... But do what you want. Nice video!!!

Are there any 3D printers here that recognise these models and can tell us the filament or resin costs for each of the featured examples? I would be very interested to learn what kind of margin these Amazon selling are making?
