Jeff, I just unboxed my Vevor 6-ton manual lever hoist with 13200 lbs loading capacity, and 10 ft of 80g chain, that thing is a beast at 77.5 lbs, can't wait to see how well it's going to do against an ash tree stump that's grown onto an oak next to it, I've dug around 3 sides with my mini excavator and cut part of the connection with my chain saw, wish me luck at 81 years old.

Shorter hose. Larger diameter hose. Or an air tank close to the gun. As a surge tank to supply massive amount of air.

The longer anvil means more material slamming against the socket to try and hammer against the nut or bolt to break it loose. I'm sure the motors are capable of their advertised torque but the purpose of an IMPACT gun is the hammering capability. The air powered guns have larger, heavier components to hammer on the anvil to break bolts free. It's easy to tell the difference just by listening to the hammer noise, the electric is a higher pitch and faster like it's just trying to vibrate the bolt loose. The other way to tell is just by how much each gun weighs, like how the Vevor is 45 lbs but produces a whopping 5,000 lbs/ft.

Several friends are going back to air here...most are tired of laying out big bucks for batteries and the lifetime of some of these cordless tools just isn't there. I've got CP and Ingersoll air tools that are 50 yrs old and still doing the job as well as being economical to use rebuild kits. I've got plenty of cordless shit and it has its place.

Longer anvils will always absorb more of your hammer impacts. A longer shaft is a longer "spring". It is a stiff torsional spring but it is a spring nonetheless. Shorter anvils, short sockets, no extensions, bigger hose, shorter hose, more pressure - they all mean more impact power. I could see that Vevor air motor having a stuck rotor vein(s) as new. More oil helped get it spinning and hammering to break the veins loose.

Over the years every air tool I have purchased is rated at 90 PSI for some reason. nearly every shop I ever worked at including my own air systems shut off at 175 PSI. and the real world get the rusted stuck bolts out is in fact the true measure of a power tool. The computations for areas affected by pressure is not hard. Especially in todays world where you can look it up on a phone. It's not hard folks.

When the fork lift un loaded a pallet of pads and a couple of cases of track bolts ug, wound up using a 185 cfm Joy air compressor ,hook to the back of the truck. Shorted up the air hose trying to get more air flow. Ingersoll also and not much better results. Did good on the dumps lugs thow. Bout time to build a offset spreader bar to mount to the truck boom to hold that impact. Love my job...

Jeff actually 10,000 psi could be construed as 5 tons " per square inch" , by those that think they know. But what the rest of us know. They weren't factoring in the full surface area of the ram. Which is part of the equation. When measuring applied pressure. So maybe have them sit in the corner, with their participation trophy.

Long anvils shafts allow to transfer the impact from the anvil to the socket with a delay,like a spring effect. Torque is delayed in time in the spring to suit big bolts plasticity/elasticity. The bigger the bolts,the longer they absorb, deform ,and restitute energy. I guess the mass of the bolts you work on with that tool require a tuning for the anvil impact rate,anvil shaft length. It's fine tuning between amount of rotationnal speed energy,mass, and elasticity. Just my theory knowing that torque is related to a mass its speed.

I have several brands of cordless electric impacts and ratchets. They all perform well and I'm not disappointed with any of them but when you need power and constant operation air power tools a the way to go. The one real big dislike I have for cordless electric is the cost of replacement batteries and the batteries do not interchange between brands.

Battery powered impacts of this size is pointless to use unless you just need a couple bolts/nuts removed. I had a few IR's and Milwaukee's and they are all sitting on the shelf covered in dust. They have their place I guess just not for what I do.

The long Anvil gun has more weight in the rotating mass than a short one. Part of the reason a straight 6 has more torque than a similar size V8. The long crankshaft that weighs more goes a long way towards that.

An even simpler way to explain it for those that don't get it is this: - we are applying 10,000 psi. That's 10,000 pounds of force in one square inch. - We do the math and find that we have 19.625 of those square inches. So we're applying 10,000 pounds of force 19.625 times at the same time. - So multiplying the numbers gets 196,250 pounds of force - Divide by 2,000 to convert to tons to get the Jeff answer. I think it's the concept of applying 10,000 pounds of pressure 19+ times that's throwing people off

There is pressure and flow (CFM) in the hose size and length and connectors. I have a 3/4 " that will not work on a small hose , I use a 1/2" hose with full bore connectors and that works . Probably those big guns you have should have a 3/4 full flow or larger for a longer hose and probably a bigger pressure tank. If you tee in a pressure gauge at the gun you can see how much pressure drop you have a t the gun when running . The longer the hose the bigger it needs to be to a point . That big gun should break off or remove almost anything with enough air flow and pressure . I remember the old TD 15 track adjustment not would not turn with the wrench and 6 feet of pipe so we put a 4 foot pipe wrench on the nut and used the backhoe bucket to push the pipe wrench that got it to move , some times it takes a come along or a machine to get enough force to do the job .

The great thing about pneumatic tools is their power density and willingness to take a beating. I know they measure air pressure at the tool - probably free speed. I'm sure you have some decent pressure loss for your length of hose, although it looks like you have a decently big hose diameter. Certainly with big air impacts I'd be running full air pressure too. I sometimes work with air hoists for special rigging jobs. They are very air hungry too. We sometimes run more air pressure if our hose diameters are on the small side.

Jeff I'm convinced that it's either the teachers have no real life work experience today like when we were in school. Or the kids can't read and comprehend today. I'm teaching my boy how to rebuild his own truck engine and we're having a ball. One of his friends said what are you doing. We said taking the engine apart. He said you just get a new truck. My boy said do you want to help me. He said I guess, he gives him the wrench and says turn it to the left to take it off. He was struggling with it and I asked. What direction are you trying to go. He pointed right 😂😂. My boy said you don't know left from right? He said I'm doing it right you are the ones doing it wrong. I gave him the manual to look up the torque specs for a few days later. He said what is that part your wanting 😂😂. Between us he is able to change his tire now and service his own car. But he didn't learn anything from school somehow or his parents. I'm actually concerned about the new generation being able to keep things together after we're done working. Great job on the video Jeff and your correct torque is torque no matter the source it's coming from.

The Ingersol may also only put out its rated torque for a very short time. Torque is torque and. a 500 Hp electric motor is as powerful as a 500 Hp diesel engine. A 501 hp Pneumatic motor should be more powerful than them both. Assuming were not taking the power band rpms into consideration. I agree with you jeff. Which is heavier, 500 lbs of feathers or 500 lbs of steel.
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt Ай бұрын
Don't think so Tim😂 to go from a 500 hp electric motor to a diesel you would need 1.3 more power
@boomupengineering
@boomupengineering Ай бұрын
Power is power but obviously an engine making the same HP at a lower RPM has more torque. For the electric motor to make the same torque, you have to gear it down. Gearing eats power and so you loose efficiency. Same if you have to gear up the diesel. Of course an electric motor is harder to rate. They can slow down and pull huge amps to make much more power than rated. HP = Torque x RPM / 5252. My 93 Dodge Cummins at 160HP didn't make much power but it had a good amount of torque and so it could still pull trailers well. You just didn't run it over 2000 rpm. Not enough air or fuel.
@michaelbrown6241
@michaelbrown6241 Ай бұрын
@@Jpaydirtcareful Jeff. HP is HP you are comparing kw to Hp i.e if you replace a 10 HP engine with an electric motor it needs to be 10 ÷ 1.3 = 7.7 Hp to do the same work. Likewise ekw is not equel to kw to generate 10 ekw you only need a 9.7 kw engine.👍
@michaelbrown6241
@michaelbrown6241 Ай бұрын
I think the trouble here is confusing power kw or hp with torque. None of the impact guns state a power rating and I think you will find the pheumatic guns will have much more power then the electric due to a higher power density. The power kw of an air motor is a function of torque and speed at a constant air pressure, the power decreases once RPM increases beyond 50% of idle (motor displacement exceeds available air flow) but can be increased by raising the air pressure.

Maybe it's like when you measure horsepower on a truck you lose 20% to the ground if you check horsepower at the flywheel of a diesel motor it is 20% more than horsepower tested at the wheel maybe torque ratings are based on motor for one and at the socket for the other granted there's not as many gears between one spot and the other but maybe that is the situation where they actually measure the torque

If Jeff knew the air pressure at the impact gun, then he'd know if he could be ahead with a diesel compressor and less hose or not. Otherwise the electric compressor has more pressure. At least that's what I've seen with the big air compressors on my projects. I remember having a huge Aggreko 480V compressor that kept going offline when I pushed it to around 130 psi.

jay wins again - math is correct, its trivial on the gun issue = i think part of the problem with the gun rating is the marketing guys like to dumb down the gun rating to "torque" but an impact gun is just that... its "IMPACTING" the fastner - not "STATIC" torque at all. So really the guns should have an ENERGY rating ( energy is equal to say a mass dropping a distance in gravity - the hammer picks up energy and whamo it hits that Wabco bolt. There is another problem... the system that is transmitting that hit of energy wants to be as close to an "impulse" delivered by non deformable materials as possible. But as Jay has discovered it ain't.... its all elastic from the anvil all the way through the shaft of the bolt right into the threaded section. So there is a difference between a gun/anvil/bolt that is light and flexible vs a gun/anvil/bolt that is heavy and very stiff So now lets think about how an impact actually removes a bolt - it has to put enough energy into all those parts such that the threaded part actually rotates slightly and does not spring back into the resting position - you have to slightly rotate the very bottom of the bolt thread with each blow from the gun. Otherwise it just relaxes and never actually moves. That undo blow has to fully overcome the mass plus the static friction forces - the trick employed is an impulse of energy not a static force applied like a torque. So the take away is this - when it comes to IMPACT GUNS - ENERGY and MASS IS KING - you need to deliver lotsa energy and have enough mass and stiffness to transfer that energy to the bottom of the bolt you want proof that you are not really applying a static torque? Just ask who is supplying the torque? Not the dude holding the gun that is for sure. So lets give up on that. There are super hi torque system that use hydraulics but those require a reaction bar to supply the equal and opposite torque let the games begin....

I believe everything you said, sometimes if another person grabs the anvil or socket and provides a twisting motion as to remove the kick back, they all of a sudden start to move. the rating in torque for reverse is not accurate and no standardized method is used, there's impacts per min/sec. and motor speed. just wish they had a real method of power measurement that was an industry standard

Jeff, DCV doesn't have much to do with charge status. Amperage is all that matters, thats why you load test batteries to test them. There is also no such thing as a 20v system, they are all 18v due to the type/number of batteries used, and the way they are sequenced. Its all marketing, its like saying your car is 14v because it charges at 14v. Those tool batteries should still show roughly 18v even when they are stone dead. If they ever show zero volts they are probably gone forever, and likely to explode due to the nature of lithium batteries. Conversely tjey can show less than 18v and still have enough current to run the tool.

so your saying that lithium can still deliver at lower voltage? I left out some video of why I was checking the batteries, and that was I wanted to see the voltage difference at 50% and 100% unfortunately I didn't have it down that far, I just know it doesn't hit very hard when you get to 50%

@Jpaydirt Just saying voltage doesn't tell you much about current. Putting a multimeter on a DC battery just gives you a rough idea about the state of the battery. But ya, a full battery gives you the most potential. Theoretically, it shouldn't matter with litium, but in practice, you lose about 5% in the first 3/4. Torque test channel also has a ton of battery tests. Happy mothers day to Mrs Paydirt

It doesn't have a high cfm, but has a large tank, it doesn't drop the pressure very fast, but on tough bolts once it's at 150 it's time to stop and wait, the compressor was free, it came from some Air Force application, has a3/4 horse motor is all, I want to put the old compressor off my service truck and a larger motor on it, but I have all this stuff to fix
