I found the exact same bike in 1987. Kids had been riding around a gravel pit and dumped it. I took it home, basic service and it ran like a dream. I could never get it registered here in the UK as the VIN plate was gone. But I rode it on the trails around the Ridgeway where you could ride without registration for many years. It never missed a beat. Parts were not easy to get back then.

I learned to ride on a '72 Benelli just like that one when I was a kid. My Dad raced motorcycles in NH (he raced for BSA and Triumph) so we always had exotic bikes to ride around through the woods and fields. We had a few Bultacos (Spain) and a '73 CZ 250 enduro (Czechoslovakia). When I was 12 Dad got me a '78 Honda CR125 Elsinore with a racing engine in it. That bike became the neighborhood legend. Good luck with the Benelli.

Should never use raw starting fluid in a new 2 stroke engine, at least add some oil to the cylinder before attempting to get it to light off. Did you check to see if the points were clean and gapped correctly? New spark plug, all the wire connectors were pushed together? Mustie always does his first 2 cycle starts with a can of premix 40:1 this being an iron bore cylinder I'd mix up a 25:1 mix for it's first rides. Riding it home on a weak premix oil mix will kill this bike.

I love this kind of stuff. Old motorcycles are so fun if they're not too far gone. I knew a guy who bought an old 3cylendar Kawasaki. It wouldn't start for the longest time, ground issue. He got it going and the front axle broke on a curve, it was a road bike, it just snapped and sent him and a passenger off a 20 foot drop onto boulders. They were okay a month later. If you rebuild any old street bikes try to replace the parts that will kill you if they break first😎

My father and I started riding dirt bikes in late 1970, and his first bike was a Benelli 175 exactly like this one. Yours may have been titled as a 1972, but I'll bet it was manufactured in 1970-71. The Benelli's major weakness was that weird dual-sprocket rear hub. Dad hardly ever rode it on the street but, in the woods, the chain would pop off regularly -- pretty much any time significant torque was required while hopping over a big tree root, or a rock, or anything giving the rear suspension a sharp jolt. One way or another, that rear sprocket set was twisting out of alignment with the engine sprocket, causing the chain to pop off. No amount of fiddling with chain length or adjustment made any difference. He rode it for one season (1971), learned how to pop a chain back on with fantastic speed and efficiency, then replaced it with a Kawasaki 'Big Horn', which was a two-stroke (with rotary-valve induction), 350cc street legal dirt bike. Meanwhile I was riding and racing an Indian 50cc 'Super Scrambler', which was a mini motocross bike. After becoming weary of wrestling the heavy, ill-handling (but dead-reliable) Big Horn, he bought the first of three Bultaco Alpinas -- two 250cc, one 175cc. He loved those Alpinas, except that the brakes were absolutely useless after passing through water. By then, I was riding a 100cc Steen. It had a Hodaka engine and gearbox (later used in the Hodaka 'Dirt Squirt') in a Steen chassis, which incorporated a 'leading-link' front suspension. That one was very difficult to shift after passing through water -- and we passed though a LOT of water in the Missouri woods. After that, I rode a tricked-out 1974 Honda 'Elsinore' 125cc motocross bike, sometimes on track but mostly on tight, gnarly trails where I mastered the art of throttle and clutch control necessary to keep it from stalling, with its nonexistent flywheel and peaky, high-RPM powerband. I think gathering this group of bikes today would probably be a minor miracle: 1971 Benelli 175cc 'Enduro' 1971 Indian 50cc 'Super Scrambler' 1970~ Kawasaki 350cc 'Big Horn' 1972~ Steen 100cc 1972~ Bultaco 250cc 'Alpina' 1973 Bultaco 175cc 'Alpina' 1974 Honda 125cc 'Elsinore' 1977 Bultaco 250cc 'Alpina' (which I wrecked rather badly, fracturing some bones) And, for good measure, any 100cc Hodaka of the period -- 'Dirt Squirt' or its predecessors

I love you guys. I'm just an old retired Engineer who's been riding for around 50 years. My last bike was a BMW R1200C. She was a beauty in black with White pin stripes. She was strong and handled like a dream with a sound that a rider could listen to all day. I really loved that bike. But we were retired and still had one kiddo still in college. So, I sold the bike to finish the job. All three kids are through college. All the Kids and grandkids are doing great. It was sure worth it. So, I guess I'm still looking for my last bike. Who knows, maybe I'll find a cheap Grom somewhere, nice and slow just like me. Or do you think the TW200 might be better? Or what about that Kawasaki ? Or, what about that little Benelli ?...So many choices. I'll probably just be doing short runs through our beautiful wine country or a run to the coffee shop to work on my latest design obsession. According to my Bride of 53 years, apparently, I have the attention span of a Tsetse fly...I really hope they never make a shiny Squirrel or I'm screwed. I always look forward to the words for the day on your videos. Very cool. God Bless you and yours. Thank you for a great channel...kunk

That Benelli brings back memories! The minibike I learned to ride on was a Benelli Dynamo, which was one of the bikes in the promo stuff and a pics they showed. That thing was all of 65cc and a top speed of 40ish, and all of about 3" of travel (still more than my Harley), but it could just about climb a verticle surface, it got outrageous gas mileage, and the magneto screwed up every's TV picture as I rode by. lol

I have a 66' 250 Benelli, the bottom end of my engine looks identical. interesting they used the same crankcase on all these engines for years. my frame also looks the same. Mine sat for years and back in the late 80's we attempted to push start it the same way after cleaning everything up and we could not keep it running unless we were pushing it. it turned out the rings had broke apart in sections and was not holding good compression anymore

I've seen Benelli mopeds, hard to find parts for them there was guy in Atlanta or NOLA that you could get some stuff from otherwise you have to find them in Italy and have it shipped. Good luck with the bike.

You guys should have your own discovery channel show or something, I would love to watch that. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Fascinating bike stuff but even more fascinating was the weird brick work on the house. Looks like the brickie had not learned to take the excess cement off.

If you wanted to push start it, you use a higher gear, it gives you more leverage on the motor when pushing the power backwards into it using the rear tire to turn it over. You pick the gear based on which one doesn't cause the tire to slide when you let out the clutch. Also, a 12 point metric socket would have let you shift it without a shifter.

I owned a mid 70s Benelli 125 Cross, I enjoyed it but it was a little temperamental in both starting and running consistently. Weak brakes, short action throttle, hard suspension, great fun! Swapped it for a Triumph 3TA!
