It’s because the Apple Pencil that you opened is the 1st generation which only works for iPads with a home button but 2nd generation works for iPad without home button only! And the iPad that you have you the the magnet part on the side under neath the sound buttons that’s how you charge the 2nd generation one but putting it on that part
