Hank, Enjoy all your videos. My 7.3 gets 18-20 mpg at 60mph. The gas gauge is aways off and it is an automatic. I made a trip to Alaska in 2015, pulling a 2000lb travel trailer and averaged between 13 and 15 mpg. Before I left on trip, I rebuilt everything I could get apart and somethings I shouldn't have. With 295000 miles, the excursion has been a great car and very reliable. Thanks for your great videos John

For the A/C air only blowing through the defrosting ducts check the vacuum-operated solenoid that sits between the passenger-side hood hinge and the firewall. The rigid vacuum line to that gets brittle and breaks. My 95' F-150 had that exact same issue. At 20:53 in your video you can see it in the upper left corner.

The line is completely missing from the lume to the vacuum canister (whatever it’s called) but the 90* plastic elbow is still on it. Thanks for the comment. I’ll get a new line soon and see if that fixes my problem 👍

There's no manifold vacuum on a diesel, so they run a vacuum pump on the front of the motor to run vacuum stuff, including the brake booster. Scary when it fails. Later on they switched to hydraulic brake booster, run from the power steering pump. The blend door went out on my Son's 351/5.8 gasser. Could get the heat exchanger out, but not the blend door without pulling the whole damned dash.

This truck looks like what you really needed, a tough truck that better fits what you do! As mentioned above, check the tank vent hoses! You might also need to put the nozzle in at a particular angle, due to the need when installing the bed. Heater/ AC blower defaults to defrost. Your problem is probably the blend door actuator, which is pretty cheap, and easy to change. (It is behind the glove box) Diesels don't have manifold vacuum, so you can't use vacuum motors to operate stuff. I owned a 2004 diesel 6.0, and in 100k that blend door motor was the only out of warranty repair. Highway speeds...you should be able to run the legal limit "forever" with no harm. Drive by the tach, not the speedo!! I once drove mine 'way over the limit, towing a 14k trailer. Truck didn't seem to mind. Later models have a 6 speed automatic, with a tow/haul switch on the shift lever, which selects a different program in the transmission. There's also a manual/automatic mode if you wish. I think the rear axle is a Dana 60, but that is a guess! My new F-250 has an electric lock for the rear end, which will lock up like a spool under 20 MPH, otherwise acts like a regular limited slip.

The vent on the filler is probably messed up from flexing it to meet up with the flatbed body. Check for hose kinks and add in an external tank vent if it doesn't improve. Cool old truck Hank! 👍😁

Worth checking the vents on the tanks themselves aren’t blocked too. Not sure if the IDIs have an evap system; I guess not, or if it does it’s fine because it hasn’t thrown a Check Engine light. Good luck! 🙂

Try turning nozzle 90 degrees and then 180 to find the happy place to fill tanks. My flatbed is about 100 degrees from the normal position. Also reach under truck and grab the emergency brake cable about a foot from each brake drum and push and pull it back and forth to fully release brake and then pedal will not sag and turn light on in the dash.

I second the part about turning the nozzle 90/180 (sideways/upside down). Drove a 96 F-350 bucket truck for years, and that was the only way to fill the tanks without having to baby it the whole time.

That is a really nice truck. I have s 96 7.3 dually. Anyhow, your truck does have a vacuum pump. And, it probably has a broken vacuum line under the hood close to the firewall near the ac blower. That will cause the problem with the air coming out the wrong ducts.

Nice rig, I had to move the filler spout to the top of the bed, or you can put a drag up tank on the bed and run a small gravity feed hose to the main tank, with a electric cut off switch. Put a water Separator filter between the tanks. Welcome to the Old Flat Bed Family !!!

The 7.3 don't like aftermarket sensors only factory sensors. And a little trick at least to get you by so you don't have to be there forever at the pump is to stick a funnel in the filler neck and then pump fuel into the funnel.

I was trained (taught) by and old ford mechanic. He worked on those old swamper trucks (derrick trucks), from Texas and Oklahoma. The fuel gauge was often a big problem the ground would get rusted or lose and through them off.( Not very reliable ) I would just run new wire to tanks and frame. The fill necks on the tanks are shortened to make the bed fit and cause the the problem you are having with fill tube, either lift the fill tube or change to a custom tank, it usually was just change to custom tanks for the F350s. The temp gauge won't reset like the others when to key is cycled, (moves, reads when power is put to it). And the windows will probably work when you replace the switch controls.( would replace the door wiring harness, there cheap enough). The blend door is behind the glove compartment and easy to change, it is an electric in that model. Finally i would replace the tank selector solenoid, they often go bad and cause tons of headaches. But in all beautiful truck and great stout engines. Wish you all the luck and God bless you too.😉😉😉

The fuel is spilling back because the filler neck isn't steep enough. It's common on flatbed installations on diesel trucks. Diesel foams easily. I've built several beds. The trick is to make sure the fill pipe dips down as close to the filler as possible.

Howboutcha and Bam-ba-lam! I have my 3rd Ford-Navistar diesel. A 6.9, a 7.3 and 6.0 PowerStrokes. Never use the truck fuel hose to fuel a Ford diesel. The inlets are notoriously small and you'll have to put them in half way, and run them by hand to get them filled. Flatbeds are even worse. There's so little space between the bed and the frame rails, that the fuel inlets are smashed nearly flat. I kept a 4x4 or 6x6 behind my seat that I'd drive up on at the fuel pump and it really helped. The oil pressure and temperature gauges aren't really analog gauges. If the corresponding idiot light would be out, gauges will read right in the middle of normal. Your're lucky to have the 5-speed (you said 4 at one point) rather than the E4OD automatic, which was not up to the PowerStroke, was possibly Ford's worst automatic, and which really should have a shift kit installed to keep it cool. If it's never run a diet of bio-diesel -- DON'T. Until you replace all of the rubber hoses in the engine with new. 95s and earlier weren't compatible. 96 and newer were OK. The water fuel-separator lever (yellow) is on the front of the fuel filter, under the dog house. Run it every so often until all the water's drained, and you get fuel -- Until you are sure that your fuel dealer isn't cutting your diesel with water. I switched stations and that problem went away. Extending that hose will help with the mess. Be careful when you have anybody replace your fuel filter. If it's not set on right it'll leak tons of fuel on top of the engine. Your mileage is pretty good, around 14-16. When my 96 was faiirly new I towed a horse trailer with two 1900 lb horses from Portland to Fresno, and got 16 in the mountains. Glow plugs are built in to the valve cover gaskets. Once you need a couple, you've got to replace the gasket, and all 4 glow plugs. That's a good looking truck. Bam-ba-lam!

I had a '92 Dodge diesel with a JM flatbed. When they installed the flatbed, they didn't shorten the hose in the filler neck which made the diesel run uphill when filling causing that same problem. I shortened the hose and fixed that problem.

I have a '96 with the 7.3 PSD. There isn't an adjustment for the E-brake. I made one and used a turnbuckle to allow the cable to be tightened up. Also there is a connector that goes into the VC gasket that sometimes goes bad. After replacing 2 out of the 4 connectors the glow plugs and injectors work much better.

The vacuum motors control the direction of the forced air from the blower. There’s always a vacuum leak that causes it. Check under the hood right above the blower motor. There is a vacuum line that gets brittle and breaks causing the issue. The default air flow is defrost and floor. Check that first. I have owned 15 or 20 of the OBS Fords and have 4 now. Good luck!

So i remember from the mid 90's my uncle ran a ranch in central Kansas. He used to order a 6 door f350 4x4 every two years. I'm not sure if the six dior came from Ford or not but every two years in September he would have a new one. I use to have to drive them a lot during summers for a summer job. I hated putting fuel in it. The rear tank would always be all foamy and the only way to fill it would be to let it sit for hours. I don't know what was different with diesel then vs. now. I have numerous for trucks for my business now I have 7.3's and 6.7's and I have never noticed fuel issues like that. I would love to have this old truck. I miss them a lot.

Just let that 7.3 aka T444E run and drive the mess out of it. The air regulator is vacuum actuated. Probably have a vacuum leak so it won't change from the defrost. Fueling, try turning the nozzle sideways. Might work. GPR= Glow Plug Relay. Those are some really good engines. I have dealt with both from the Power stroke and the International side. Should serve you well. Stay safe my friend.

HANK! That fuel hiccup you had is the throttle pedal. They are electronic not mechanical. When they start to go bad they do exactly what it did to you, it loses connection and goes to idle. The reason it started working again isn’t bc you shifted gear it’s bc when you shifted you took your foot off the throttle and put it back on which made it connect again. You can buy the whole throttle pedal for fairly cheap and you literally just unplug the old one, un bolt it and bolt/plug in the new and your good to go! Hope you read this and hope this eases your mind a little buddy! It’s a common prob with age on these trucks. Good looking rig and great video!

Air only coming out of the defrost vents at the top of the dash usually indicates the heater/ac unit under the dash is not receiving an adequate amount of engine vacuum to the vacuum motors that control the direction of air flow, rather it be defrost vents, dash vents, or floor vents. If the unit is not getting enough vacuum signal, the system defaults to the defrost vents. Since the engine has had some major repairs and disassembly, it may be as simple as the HVAC vacuum line being broken, came off the vacuum port on the engine, or simply was not reinstalled on the port after repairs were completed. Hopefully the vacuum diagram sticker is still under the hood somewhere so you can check the routing. Very nice truck there Hank, and looking forward to seeing you work out the bugs. Keep the vids coming, and God bless.

Temp sensor and fuel gauge are resister style gauges. They don’t use voltage like the charge and oil pressure gauge do. Problems with the tanks are probably sending units as they see a lot of water over the years and they rot out. Selector valve could be bad as well. It’s under the driver side passenger on the frame. Best of luck

Most likely it is the heater air door actuator for just blowing out of the defrost. A simple fix. As for the fuel, could be the vent. I think there is a video on YT about this. Some problems could be the loose nut behind the wheel. lol

I've had my '96 since 2000. The temp gauge doesn't set like the others. It generally stays close to where it was when you turn the key off then moves to cold or where it is when you start it. The gauge is correct for that engine when running at temp.

ABS light coming on and off is most likely due to too much slop in one of the wheel bearings and the cruise control not functioning is actually a recall you can have done at a dealership no charge

The abs light and no cruise control combination usually means that the brake light switch is bad. When you replace it, use the ford part, the aftermarket switch doesn't have the correct contacts. Good luck.

Nice truck. I don't know about the '95 but my '93 had a bad brake light switch (mine was on the proportioning valve on the frame, yours looks like it's on the master cylinder), leaking internally and that made the cruise control not work, mine also had deteriorated tabs on the back of the hvac controls that would not allow it to switch functions. On mine, someone had removed the filler tube inside the filler neck so it could not vent properly while filling with fuel and cause a back pressure issue, I had to replace both window motors but from what you discovered it's probably a wiring issue. I love those old trucks, even with a few issues to deal with.

I had someting go bad with the speed sensor circuit (replacing the sensor on the rear-end didn't fix it) the result was the speedo bounced around, and the cruise control couldn't make sense of it, and didn't work.

I bought that same truck new. Put over four hundred thousand trouble free miles on it. Only real issue was cam sensors, learned to keep the old one and just put it back on when one would quit. Never did think twice about after that cause it would give a stutter and then quit. I got pretty good at swapping them out as just one screw holding them. Might want to do when its a cold engine tho. Vacuum pump hose is probably problem with air and vents. The windows are a weak point as rodents seem to like those very well. If it was me, and you are friends with Wes, go there for all info to that rig as he has one too. Your in dirt dobber country and those vent pipes for the fuel tanks are most likely plugged or badly routed. I put my vent hoses on a longer run going up so the fuel did not spit out on the rig. They make a vent valve so it doesn't grab water from the outsides. Mine with a five speed and four wheel drive F350 was about thirteen miles local but on trips, I have hit a high of almost twenty miles to gallon. fourteen to sixteen is a good number for mileage. Just a guess here Hank, noticing the man stick vibrations, may be a indication of a u-joint starting to talk to you. I do not like anything that covers the wheel hubs so just ditch them. I never seen anything that indicated it was four wheel drive but kinda hope for it to be so. I have been in the hospital now for some time. In and out, my kidneys are shot! Thanks to vietnam. I also am battling pneumonia and at seventy three is kinda alarming. Doctors said maybe a year but not to hold him to it

My 7.3 always ran cold. In the summer here in Southern California is the only time my temp gage would ever get to normal operating temps. And do not quote me on this but I do not think they started putting those beauty covers on the engines until 1997 so you might have a new-er motor in there.

I had the same problem with my 97 I checked that it vented and all the likely problems and what i ended up doing was a hose that was made to extend a funnel I pushed it in the tank so there was some drop in it the filler neck and hose are too low there is not enough drop i just got in the habit of using the extension and it worked like a charm

@@HamiltonvilleFarm Appreciate your Content. Honestly that truck only thing i think it needs is wiring repairs. and Change some of the Top end seals for the high pressure oil system. probably a weekend or two worth of labor in preventative maintence repairs. but it'll serve you well. change glow plugs and the Injector harness / Valve cover seal too they're problematic and while you're in there make sure your glow plugs aren't seized and put new ones in it.

That truck is a fire recovery. All the signs of it are present. The hood, the fender, new parts, paint not matching, and the engine far to clean for the year, etc... I would be pulling the dash out to find the remaining damage or actually the entire cab. I wouldn't personally trust it till I knew the extent of the main wiring harness condition. What band aids are hiding?
