More bonus points: You can chew on it without damaging it too much As a teenager with diagnosed ADHD, I * Love * to stim by chewing on things. But it sucks if my fidget toys can't hold up to that, because that means I can only fidget them a certain way. And the stims I need? They change from day to day, minute to minute, task to task. This sounds like an advertisement but I swear it's not. Basically please make sure your fidget toys can be used in multiple ways so we don't have to switch toys every five seconds.
@local_weather_dingus4 жыл бұрын
brooklyn foster I agree, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve broken a pen, pencil, or necklace pendent from chewing on them. I can’t have squeeze stim things, because I get way too anxious that they’ll break (Moche squishys are the exception, I don’t know why). I use those paper mate mechanical pencils (the thicker ones, I think it’s called clear point) because it has a twisty eraser, it’s a substitute (at least for me) for a spinner, but I still end up chewing them. Also, chewable things should be teeth friendly! You can buy new stim toys, but you can’t buy new teeth!

For the stuff he's saying "it's not really a fidget toy", there is probably a mix of stim and fidget toys, so there are fidgets, but also stims! A lot of people who need fidget toys also need stim toys, and vice versa. As for the bug-squishy-things, and the multicolored-liquid-drippy-thing are both stim toys. The squishy bug thing is supposed to be for people who like squishy textures as a stim, and the liquid thing is a visual stim. You can really see the difference when Ethan was fidgeting with the "toys", especially the cube. As a person with ADHD I have the same speech problem except a bit worse; my brain moves faster than my mouth can- I stop mid-sentence and move to completely different one, I stumble over my words, I stutter, sometimes I can't even get a word out but that might not be related lol. With the cube Ethan was able to articulate and form each sentence and make each point he wanted to make without it jumbling all together. A big suggestion to people with ADHD or ADD: find a toy or a common item to fidget with. For me it's mechanical pencils (clicking, drawing, twirling) and my pop-socket (open-close, spin). I even wear a rubber band around my wrist- it's for a different reason but it doubles as a fidget. Find something small, hopefully quiet and discreet, that works for you. Find what you do the most when distracted (do you mess with an your clothing, do you play with your fingers, do you tap and make noise) and find a corresponding item that helps with that fidget. My fidget is fiddling with my fingers and clothing- I don't try to make noise. My brother does the noise thing, so he uses a fidget cube and clicks the buttons or a fidget spinner with a louder ball bearing. Anyways, ADHD took over with this comment lol, I hope this helped people!

I would like to point out that a lot of the ones he rated as "not fidgety" were more stim toys vs actual fidget toys, which are more targeted towards people on the autistic spectrum, or people with sensory disorders/problems. There is a lot of overlap between add/adhd and autism, so I can see why the stim ones were advertised as add/adhd things

True, I’m on the autism spectrum and I used to have that rainbow ball. To clarify for anyone confused/curious: The toys that weren't exactly "fidgety" are actually intended for sensory issues! Toys intended for ADHD/ADD normally are made from a singular, generic material and feature a singular specific motion (i.e, fidget spinners, fidget cubes, rubix cubes, etc.). Sensory toys, on the other hand, vary in colour, shape, texture, and activity (i.e, play-doh, stress balls, puzzle cubes, etc.) - Although confusing, this does have excellent reasoning: In mammalian anatomy, the brain is divided into four/five sections--the predominant and most well known one being the prefrontal cortex. This part of the human brain is responsible for problem solving, organization, attention efficiency and decision making. An individual with ADHD/ADD is, in short, lacking the cognitive development that's noted as "average" by most children at a certain age. While certain children may be able to focus easily and comprehend things easily, others lack the proper maturity to do the same, which, is what leads to the diagnosis of attention deficiency. Fidget toys are used to expend some of the excess energy the brain creates as it, basically, "gets bored" of focusing on one thing--this is often why these toys are made from hard plastic, lack in differing textures, and often feature some sort of physical stimulus that requires the prefrontal cortex to expend directly on differing muscle memories. On the other hand, sensory toys are intended for individuals with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and autism spectrum disorder. Neurodivergencies such as the above affect various parts of the brain, such as the amygdala (emotional processing) and cerebellum (coordination of voluntary movements)--and, although ranging in various severities, can often be managed through sensory integration therapy (i.e, sensory toys). Differing textures, sounds, colours and more can ease or calm sensations of anxiety, overload, suicidal depression, and more. For example, the texture of something squishy and soft may appeal to them as a stimulus that eases overwhelming thoughts, sensations, and urges; but for someone else, this sensation could be triggering and/or discomforting. It's all a matter of how the individual brain processes something of the sort. - TL;DR: Even if it's not a fidget toy, it could be a sensory toy! If you're looking to find something to help you cope with whatever you're going through, finding a toy that will function as a proper and healthy distraction/alleviation is incredibly important. Stimming is a 100% valid response to stress of any sort--in fact, it's often encouraged in the neuroscience community! Hopefully this helps someone better understand the difference! Cheers!

Sure, a few may work, but I think it would be better for people with these actual problems to make them, so they know from experience. Of course, everyone is different, and likes different things. Still, someone with the condition would be better at knowing what keeps them occupied. Or, non-adhd/add people could improve their products, by making puzzles, fascinating things, repetitive, or maybe even optical illusion toys. For example, rubix cubes and fidget spinners; they're easy, fast moving, and made for fidgeting. Basically, the ones Ethan liked have good potential to be liked by others. *Alright that's enough of being smart, time to go watch memes*

hey! as someone with ADHD just wanted to let you know that self-diagnosing isn't bad and that ADHD is VERY relatable. With self-diagnosing, as long as you do your research its alright! (especially if you can't get a diagnosis). There are a lot of things that have overlapping symptoms (for example; depression, anxiety, and ADHD all share similar symptoms and can actually cause eachother!) and its just better for you if you have a greater understanding with what you may be dealing with. (my understanding of why there's such a negative connotation with self-diagnosing is the people who claim to have something and claim to know more about it than someone who actually has it) And ADHD is super relatable to neurotypical folks. A lot of normal ppl experience symptoms of ADHD, the only difference is really just how severe it is.

This might be silly but I legitimately love how open Ethan is about stim toys and fidget stuff/ his adhd and dyslexia. I have some stim/fidget stuff for various issues and i can't explain how much comfort I feel knowing Ethan understands that kind of stuff too! It's like for once people recognize that it's... okay to need fidget toys and that kind of expression of something that was/is mildly taboo is heartwarming.

This is actually a component of the adhd spectrum, and why fidget spinners were invented! As ethan also says here, we concentrate better when our attention is split/we're doing something with our hands. Essentially, add/adhd have higher mental arousal levels on average (hardy harr harr) and by reducing that by diverting to a simple source and a focal source, we can focus better on the focal source.

@cirqueradio97154 жыл бұрын
@@OfficiallyChris It's something many autistic or adhd folks do. stimming comes in a whole bunch of forms but is usually movement or noise making (ex one of my stims is me making a specific noise repeatedly and another is flapping my hands). i don't have autism so i don't know if it works in the exact same way as it does for adhd but as i understand it's something to do to ground yourself and to help you focus. These toys could also be called stim or mind toys, most of them being made specifically for us neurodivergent folk in mind (not saying neurotypical people can't use them!!! just that these are designed to help some of our energy and such be directed at something quiet and not distractive)
@MistyGraveyard3034 жыл бұрын

I noticed that most of these toys are more “sensory” toys rather than fidget toys. They are mostly made for people with anxiety or autism ( basically people with sensory issues ). You should do more of these videos though, it’s cool to see new little trinkets we can buy. Edit: This comment was worded poorly, obviously people with ADHD and ADD can have sensory issues, I just focused on Anxiety and Autism as an example as they are the biggest market for stim toys and I personally use them to help with anxiety induced sensory overload. Totally not my intention to offend anyone, just offering ya boi Ethan an explanation as to why most of these objects weren’t “fidgety”

As someone with autism and add, I have two fidget spinners and a fidget cube, and love them SO much. It sucks that people made fidget spinners “cringe”, when the people that they were SUPPOSED to be marketed for really do like them and find them useful. Something else that I do is I fold paper, especially receipts bc they last longer, into strips, and then roll those strips into a little cylinder, and just roll it open and closed and such over and over until the paper disintegrates. I’ve done it since I was little, and it’s fantastic for fidgeting!

Yo Ethan! I'm a fellow "adult" with Asperger's/Autism. Whilst not the same as ADHD, there is however an overlap when it comes to the fidget toys and seeking sensory input. Also attention span can still be an issue. There is a website I use called Stimtastic. It has a wide variety of fidget toys and jewelry for all individuals. Some are also designed to be discreet so you can take them into the workplace or use them around people who may not be open to the whole stimming thing. They do mystery loot boxes too! As for the butterfly knife/balisong trainer, look up the Squiddy. Its not at all threatening looking which means that you can take it out and about without worrying that people will think it looks like a knife from a distance. I personally have the Squiddy C. Happy fidgeting bud!

My favorite classroom in my whole life was in my early childhood education program. I had a teacher that would put out things of fidgets on the tables every class period. It normalized their use. Like yea the first couple of classes they were a bit of a distraction for some but the novelty of it wore off and made me feel not weird to use fidget during class.

I've never been diagnosed with ADHD but I'm working on getting insurance so I can get screened because I have _so many_ of the common symptoms/signs. This is one of them lol. I've had to go back and read the same paragraph in a textbook like 4 times before I actually understand what I'm reading and that's why I usually don't read the textbook, I just go over the notes from the PowerPoint lol. However I can sit down and read fiction novels _a bit_ better, at least enough to maybe only have to go back once or twice to comprehend it. I also don't have dyslexia like Ethan so that helps too.

update: I do have adhd, and my favourite fidget toy are these things called tangles. They're made by a company called zuru and they're really fun. I had a colourful bumpy one, but I accidentally broke it, so now I have a black one but it isn't as good :( I also like the two rings that have the things and spin. Ethan has one 12:06 original comment: I don’t have adhd, or autism (lots of fiddle toys are marketed towards people with adhd or autism), but I’m a very fidgety person In class, I usually end up opening a pair of scissors, and putting a pencil through the finger hole. Then I grab both ends of the pencil, and spin it, which makes the scissors spin. This helps me concentrate, but other people don’t like it much because they worry it’ll hit them. The scissors won’t hit them though, because I’m holding both ends of the pencil

1. I feel like so many toys advertised as adhd toys are just bad because they're made by people without adhd and who don't understand it/ think that people with adhd are just childish 2. with rubiks cube i really recommend a speed cube, especially the go cube (getgocube.com) its so smooth and nice and so speedy and you can also connect it to your phone where it can time you or teach you how to solve it i really enjoy it. 3. I'm quite mad about what happened with fidget spinners and similarly fidget cubes but the spinners were definitely more popular and well known but i really liked them but they became overused and trendy which made me kinda sick of them, then schools banned them which i find quite unfair and they stopped being cool and now i always feel judged for having one and i don't like playing with it anymore because i've had people be like why do you have a spinner no one uses them anymore they're not cool anymore :///
