I threw caution out the window this year 😂 I bought a Conn 83H Bass Trombone in June 2024. I then bought a 2024 Yamaha YSL-448G Large Bore Tenor Trombone with F attachment. I then added a 2024 Blessing BTB 1488OR in November for myself for Christmas. Next year, I'm buying a 1977 King 4B. Then, in 2026, I'm buying a newer bass trombone. I have my original bass trombone from high school.

I am looking forward to seeing your journey. I started mine 6 months ago, but I'm not a professional.

Fairly recently got back into playing bought a Eastman 828 and I’m looking to get a bass trombone since that’s always what I was doing before i stopped and focused on strings, glad to be back in the brass world.

I have a BBb contrabass trombone, so I can't say that what I go through will also apply to this instrument, but do also have an F Cimbasso, which I assume is similar enough to an F Contrabass trombone. What I would say about the Cimbasso in general is that it feels so enjoyable to play, there's no such thing as getting bored with it (unless there's just no music that I can find). However, there's a lot of things that I don't like about it, mostly relating to the general configuration of the instrument, which I assume isn't that big of a problem for the contrabass trombone. But then again, both have a LOT of tubing, meaning the weight is a universal thing to deal with. The worst part about the Cimbasso is the lack of practical application, and I am very sad to admit that. I got to play contrabass trombone (BBb) for a band one time, and I made next to no difference throughout the band because all tuba parts were covered, didn't need to play that, all the bass trombone parts were covered, also didn't need to cover that. I the read tuba music, but it really didn't matter because I had to try my best to blend with the 3 other tubas, which is a lot easier said than done with a cylindrical instrument. To put it short, there's little use or need for a contrabass trombone, it's non zero, but still very small. On the other hand, when these instruments play and have a role to fill, they do it WELL. I played contrabass trombone for a pep band one time, and it was an absolute beast, there was finally difference to be heard, fun to be had. I can't say the same for Cimbasso because I haven't had a chance to play it in a real setting before, but I can definitely speak for the contrabass trombone, at least the BBb one. Of course, mine is BBb, so it's not by any means the exact same, but then again, who cares about being practical when you have fun instead? Just because there's nothing that calls for it, contrabass trombones will always fill that contrabass trombone shaped hole in my heart, and I will forever stick with that. In the end, amazing instrument, I'd absolutely buy another contrabass trombone (in the key of F this time) if I had money laying around.
