I used to work at Nintendo in the GBA days, and did a short stint in refurbishment/repairs. We did them for warranty replacements, never for sale. Typically we disassembled, conduct visual inspection, replace any scratched/damaged parts (always a new screen cover), reassemble and inspect with test cart. Most parts were reused if there was no visible wear or damage, a lot of returns were only due to flat batteries anyway.

"Display Only" might mean it was a Display unit (as in, a shop or even internal Nintendo display of their products).
@gabrias4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. That was my first thought. It would explain why it has no marks of usage. And the refurbishing service in that case, would mean just a mild external cleaning. In that sense I guess it would be worth Nintendo's time to "refurbish" it.
@Charky_Creations4 жыл бұрын
that was my thought. They might send the refurb ones out to shops since they'll end up getting wrecked anyway.

I've bought several refurbished items from NoA, and they have all looked like this, as the only issue is you don't get standard packaging. I believe most of these so called "refurbished" units, or buy backs, or just systems that couldn't be sold for some reason, and they end up as refurbs. I've seen no signs of use, having been opened, or otherwise and that's been for handhelds, as well as consoles.
@TheRetroFuture4 жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear! Did they ever repair anything? Or just replace!
@chrislaustin4 жыл бұрын
@@TheRetroFuture Actually, I just bought from them under their "refurbished" section in their online store, and they always arrived in new condition. I've been buying "N" stuff since the G&W days, and I've never had to send anything in for service or warranty work, so can't comment on that side of their business. But as far as buying refurbished goes, it's always been "new", at least from what I could tell.
@GreatSageSunWukong4 жыл бұрын

Considering a quick glance at Nintendo's site shows they have a surprising amount of refurbished units, I can only assume a good chunk of them are stock that was simply returned for some reason such as packaging damage. Stuff that stores just didn't want to bother trying to sell. Ostensibly returns or exchanges might fall into that category as well. Everyone else I assume sends a unit in for Nintendo to repair, so there wouldn't be as much inventory to go around due to something like that.

4:54 Honestly that wouldn't surprise me at all at least here in the States(possibly only certain companies). Refurbished doesn't necessarily mean repaired when it comes to large companies, sometimes it's simply the fact the product was purchased and in a customers hand and the customer sent it back faulty or not. Sometimes they even slap the "refurbished" sticker on it when the item wasn't even used or opened.

Elliott, this is the perfect occasion for me to ask you : Would you be able to tell me which way is the flat spot on the D-pad facing on this particular unit? Given this is technically brand new I would be really interested in knowing that... I can't really tell from the outside even though it's a clear shell. To be more specific, there's a (slight) flat spot on the circular part of the D-pad (the plastic disc serving as a base for the cross) and it can be facing 4 ways (either one of the 4 corners). I'm trying to refurbish my original childhood GBA and would love to put it back the "factory" way even if it's a small detail. Thanks a million!!!

I had an AGS 001 as a kid and the the screen hinge broke, I don't remember how. My mom called Nintendo and sent it to them. It got refurbished and sent back in a very similar, but obviously smaller box. When I received the unit, it was actually my old AGS001 with a new hinge. I could tell from prominent scratch on the bottom. The best part was that I remember, was that the clear part that carries the light from the LED's to the side of the AGS was missing. I loved that as a kid because nobody else could say that. I also remember the sticker that was on it from the refurb and I kept the box for a while until my mom deemed it trash and threw it away. Years later I can remember removing the refurb sticker from the until, I don't know why. I still have the AGS 001 and play on it regularly.

I got a refurbished galaxy new 3DS XL from GameStop and the thing was literally like brand new. There was nothing on the screens and there were no scratches or scrapes anywhere on the console. I've noticed that the hinges on the ones i had before would get scraped so easily but the hinges on this one were (and still are) untouched (well, there are no black spots on them). I can't remember if the repair was through Nintendo but whoever repaired it did a damn great job. It was like getting a brand new, never before used console right out of the box. Before I got my galaxy 3DS, I got a refurbished red new 3DS XL and when I opened it, there was this glue-like residue on the edges of the screen so I returned that one. Later on, I got a refurbished black new 3DS XL from GameStop and that one was scratched all over and the hinges were scraped but I bought it anyway. About a year later, it started having trouble reading games. Also, it was getting a little difficult to put the games in it like soda or something was spilled on it and the reader was all sticky. I never let any liquid touch that thing and I never let anyone even touch it without my supervision. I've had this galaxy 3DS for over two years and I have not had one problem with it. I've heard bad things about GameStop refurbished consoles so either Nintendo repaired my galaxy 3DS or I got very lucky. Idk but I am very happy with the one I got.

Nintendo, like many other businesses, has a mix of both repair parts and replacement units to facilitate quick turnaround on repairs. On top of this, it isn't uncommon for devices to be sent back to the manufacturer after a single use. So a device like that can be considered "refurbished", even though it never needed repairs. So simply put, it is how it is because it's good for business.

I would say the unit may have been actually fixed by Nintendo. Companies often keep a stock of brand new units that are given as replacement and old ones go back to the service center for fixing. After some time the stocks start to run out and customers are given fixed units looking brand new. As a former Apple authorised service technician I can tell Apple gives replacement units "new or as new". On the exterior they look brand new but inside they often have markings from the remanufacture center technicians like showing what was replaced etc. Concluding, this particular Gameboy may not be the original customer's unit but given the serial number with batcode being hand placed above the main sticker I am 99% certain it was remanufactured or been from the service replacement stock. If you have any questions as far as service centers work then hit me up :) Cheers!

I'm an electronic repair technician, if Nintendo run their repairs anything like I've seen they'll likely have one or a few "refurb kit" full of parts at various levels of "refurb" that get worn, so all the buttons/memebranes, battery, volume slider, screen etc that sees a lot of wear will get replaced. With regard to fixing errors, with the products I repair you end up learning the typical issues and just know where to look/what to replace. Its possible that if there are multiple PCBs within this gameboy that they'd just replace whichever one they know to contain the fault. It's also common for service exchange/refurb products to reuse boxes, especially if they don't go back to whoever sent it in, which will by why the numbers don't match. Don't take what I said as fact though as I haave no insight to Nintendo, this is just how some products I repair are handled.

Your brand new gameboy theory is probably correct. I remember sending my beat up 360 to Microsoft for red ring and they sent me what seemed to be a brand new console, at least brand new casing.

It reminds me of when there was a recall on my Nvidia Shield tablet because there was a risk with the battery. I though they would send me a box that I would use to ship my tablet and they would swap the battery for a new one... nope. A week after I filled the recall info I received a brand new tablet. Nvidia had a kill switch installed in an update that disabled the old tablet once you activated the new one but I was still surprised that they just sent new tablets instead of fixing the old ones.

My sister has that color gameboy. It still works. I've never seen one of those that actually has the battery cover.

I wish I could find a GBA for $5, or even $20. On Ebay they are going for $40-$60 unfortunately.

Yeah It's almost definitely replaced. When I got my Joy-Cons repaired last year for drifting they just outright replaced the whole system.
