I Bought a GTX 1070 in 2024. Is it Still Good for 1080p Gaming?

Is Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1070 8GB still capable of 1080p gaming? And more importantly, is it one of the best graphics cards you can buy for less than $100 on sites like eBay?

I’ve been PC gaming for over 2 decades and the GTX 1070 is probably my all time favourite GPU. It was super powerful at the time yet not too expensive although at the time it was more than I usually spent on GPUs. It didn’t use much heat and it lasted a long time before feeling old. I also had no issues with it.

I personally just ordered. 1070 because it should run every game I'm interested in, the most demanding of which is helldivers 2, and they only require a 1050 as minimum spec.

I just upgraded from a evga 1070 I bought for 315€ back in 2016, and never disappointed me. Best card ever. Just like the 1080. After all these years it’s still pushing to 60+ fps in most games.

Nice video, I just retired my GTX 1070 with a RX 6650 GPU (bought at $229 new, cheaper than most second hand RX 6600XT GPU's second hand I could find) for 1080P gaming, the GTX performed well for its age for me and recommend it as a value GPU for new entry gamers for its bang for a buck on a budget.

Bought a gtx 1070 for 100$ about 5 months ago, and i couldn't be happier for the price. Upgraded from a gtx 750 ti, such a massive difference. And being able to play games at higher settings, and just being able to play some at all , is fantastic. Like for example, fh5 on Ultra, i get basically 60+ or 60 fps flat everywhere. Its so good

Wow you're right, the 1070 is about $100 as a median right now on ebay. 1070 ti is about 130-140 dollars. 1080's are about the same as the 1070 ti. And a 1080 ti is like 200-220 dollars. On the lower end of the spectrum the GTX 1060 6gb is also 80-90 dollars. If we're looking at price vs performance the 1070 really is looking pretty good.

yes, I gave it as a hand me down to my sister recently. I used it from 2017 until 2023. Only recently died on my sister. I very rarely overclocked the card and comfortably played games in 2k 60fps on high for long periods of times. Ran VR games smoothly as well when the original vive came out. Rare driver issues, HIGHLY recommend. 7 year life span under daily moderate to high usage. I think it died to due to my sister using it with uncapped FPS in games.

I still have this card. It's been soldiering on in various backup systems the last few years. I also use this card as my "floater" for various new builds just to start the system up until a more powerful card is acquired. Still does that job fairly well considering the age.

I have the exact card and it's very power hungry compared to my other GTX 1070s. It's the only 1070 I've seen with a 8+6 Pin power requirement compared to just 8 Pin for the rest.

I just recently scored a 1070ti for $80usd. Popped it in my secondary/old rig that I use when I want to play on my TV. I've yet to find something I can't get looking sweet on it. 60hz at 1080p is nothing for one of these. If you're looking to game and save some money, just grab one of these. The 1080 and 1080ti is still an excellent card too. All Great cards that have good life left

I'd personally take a 1660s or 1660 ti over a 1070 these days if the price is close. Functional async compute is nice these days.

I agree. The performance of the GTX 1660 Super or Ti is identical to the GTX 1070, and it also supports VP9 video decoding that the 1070 doesn't support. Most KZbin videos use VP9 encoding. If you have a GPU that doesn't support VP9 decoding, your CPU has to decode the video. That means more power wasteed, less efficiency, and choppy playback.

I have both, a 1660Ti and an unused still boxed (new) 1070. I have the 1660TI which I bought, that was a display model in a cabinet, so never used. It's fine for a limited amount of games, however good for a workstation. The 1070 was a spare, tested but never used. I am going to build yet another PC to put this in. The extra V-Ram for the older games will be great. These are not my main rig of course. Any ideas regarding a CPU?, to match the 1070?

Mine came with a prebuilt Dell Omen desktop from BestBuy. It's not nearly as nice looking as that one. For a 7 year old card it still outruns anything coming out right now on current gen consoles, easily. The insane PC exclusive games it would likely struggle with, but games like that are a small market so I'm not missing out on much. Yeah it doesn't have the advanced chip features of the newer nVidia cards but that stuff is either barely used or barely noticeable. Overall 9/10 if it was watercooled 12/10. I bet it will still be a viable choice for most AAA console games five years from now at 1080p.

It depends on what you want to do. If you're going to be streaming/recording gameplay, I'd recommedn the 1660 Ti/Super. If you're playing VRAM intensive games, the 1070 will be a better option

I just sold my GTX 1070 that I bought sep. 2017 for 90€. I am so sad :D I really loved it. After I changed my Ryzen 1700 with a 5600 the GTX 1070 ran faster as well and I heard coil whine. I bought a used RX6800 (+68% speed it said on a benchmark site) for 318€ (I only saw used 6700 for 350€ somehow) which was overclocked to almost be a RX 6800 XT for 3 years at 70 degrees, I hope it doesn't die early. It feels very powerful, I never noticed my 1070 was so old :D Sons of the Forest (released 2024 is my most demanding game I think because it seems unoptimized) GTX 1070 -> 60 fps at full speed and coil whine, all my other games like Elden Ring (2022) were completely fine. RX6800 -> 170+ FPS or something (225 in furmark) and very silent if it doesn't run at 100% Sons let GPUs run the max FPS by default so even the RX 6800 was louder. I now run my games at 60 fps and my RX 6800 is chilling hard, hope to extend the life span with that tactic because I would like to keep it for the next 5+ years. I also tried 1440p gaming now, but I didn't like it, went back to 1080p, I have some very old games that looked terribly streched :D my 1440p monitor is for working and youtube.

I'm using the 1070 still. It started to struggle for me in 2020-games and later. I went from being able to run 1080p ultra to 1080p medium/low settings on the newer games (helldivers 2, cyberpunk, etc). Pre-2020: Ultra 100-140fps 2020-present: 40-70fps on low (or a mix of settings). It's finally time to upgrade my rig and maybe get 4k monitors too. sigh. Not with this economy though. Going to hold off for a bit. I plan on buying a 7900gre or maybe the 4070 super this year or maybe a 4080 or 7900xtx if I wait until 2025. The prices should have dropped with the release of 50 series cards from nvidia.

1070 was launched in may 2016. it was tge first card with 8gb vram. Nvidia again launched 8gb 3070 in 2020 September and 4060/ti 8gb at same 400 to 500 bucks in 2022. 😮

My GF bought me a GTX 1070 about 5 or 6 years ago. I've loved the hell out of it ever since and while the GTX cards are showing their age a bit, that's mostly because modern cards require gimmicks to run games on full quality. You can get a 1070 for around £100 which is mad value. Older games don't need GPU gimmickery, I don't see the point of ray tracing (it makes games pitch dark!) and DLSS may be there to prop up lazy game devs who can't be bothered to optimise. Are they worth paying hundreds more for?

Got 1070TI Gainward phoenix 8gb and it is a beast. Played elden ring, witcher, rdr2, gta with decent fps no drops. And games like valorant/league of legends are Just running up to 400 fps. 1070 is still a great card. If you stream tho keep in mind quality is not as good as rtx on the stream!

why keep cyberpunk at low preset? you can get around 50-55 fps on average on medium settings which is also fine i also tried maxed out settings and it did 35 fps average on 1080p without fsr you can play at any settings and get more than a playable experience at very least

So the GTX 1070 is about the same as the modern RX 6600. I assume the RX 6600 will age similar to the GTX 1070. Basically the RX 6600 is what is an RTX 3050 today but what was in the past the GTX XX70 line. What was in the past the let's say RTX 3070 (GTX 1070) is today the RX X600 line. So the low class X600 line today is as powerfull as the old mid class XX70 line. That is an slight improvement. However the RX 6600 (modern low end) is just about 10% more performing as the old GTX 1070 (old mid range). Now that is an improvement. But this gives a hint how the RX 6600 will age as well. I hope so. In one tower I sport an RX 6600 and in the other one an RX 6750 XT. I guess since the GTX 1070 still has an long service life before it, the RX 6600 will have even an longer lifespan regards usability in games. The modern game Enlisted is playable still with an GT 1030 (as well Pascal) at ultra low specs and that gives me around 45 fps. Playable and the graphics are not unbearable.

I only play in 1080P without ray tracing without upscaling even if I only have an RTX 4070 with 60 FPS log I don't need more than 1080P 60 FPS even a GTX 980 would be enough for me
