Up to 30% off raised beds & seed starting gear: shop.epicgarde...
Subscribe to Epic Urban Homestead: / epicurbanhomestead The day is FINALLY here...I will be moving from my small front yard urban garden to 13,0000 square feet of empty space...a completely blank canvas to build the future of Epic Gardening.
I'm calling it the Epic Urban Homestead and will STILL be showcasing small space urban gardening techniques, so don't worry. I'll also be getting chickens, working with more fruit trees and shrubs, and doing in-ground beds, amongst other things.
I have all of you to thank for helping this dream of mine become possible - without you all following along my gardening journey and learning along with me, this WOULD NOT be possible. Thank you so much and I can only hope to pay it forward with some truly epic content.
Keep growing,
Kevin

How concerned are you about cross pollination when growing many varieties of the same thing in a small space? For example, I am growing jalapeños and I have some heirloom Peruvian sweet pepper seeds...the instructions on the seeds say not to plant within 500 ft of another pepper variety, what could possibly happen???

Since you have a blank canvas of awesome, I think starting out with the basics(planning in ground beds, raised beds, pots, fruit trees/bushes etc... then move into the irrigation. That could be its own full length garden planning section, with those finished then continue with your normal videos! And for sure tear down that tiny shed lol.

Back when I was a kid we would always do that before planting season with my grandpa. He had a huge garden. Ah, sweet times. Anyway, to do that, given the size of the property , Kevin would need a machine I'm not sure the English term it has like teeth that's rotating and it digs into the earth and mixes it.

The chickens would appreciate that shade in the back, the shed would be a perfect coop. You could still use them in a mobile one but I think during summer they really need the shade, we have to shade ours in East Texas.
@zia_kat
@zia_kat 4 жыл бұрын
agreed. that shed is in a perfect place to be turned into a coop. i wouldn't bother with a chicken tractor especially if more fruit trees are going in. i'd just do an attached deep litter run fenced off north of the shed/coop, let the chickens create compost in the shade and use the sunny areas for planting.

Don't need a greenhouse in San Diego.
@trishdavi7049
@trishdavi7049 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you don't need a greenhouse in San Diego because of mild winters but for starting seedlings it could be better than the great outdoors during the rainy season and more economical than using indoor lights. If doing a greenhouse be sure to build it ventilated with cool air intake near the bottom and exhaust fans near the top. Because of the heat of your climate zone is why it would be better on the partially shaded side of the yard. Seedlings and cuttings like cooler tops and warmer roots. Even in winter when you might start them early. Geothermal heat from compost can be more cost efficient than running electric heat pads for starting seedlings that you currently might use. Definitely check with zoning bylaws first before constructing anything near a property line.

A couple of suggestions: nix ALL grass. You can find good ground cover, or even simple wood chips, to fill any voids for areas you don't use right now. Don't level the airflow shed yet. Ponder and give it time, because you might find the perfect use for it. Given your eternal great weather, you could allocate certain parts of the property to the fruits and vegetables of different countries or regions--tropic, sub tropic, fruits, legumes, exotic options, or European, South American, African, Australasian, Asian, etc.

Drag it back into the deepest corner of the shade and make it a cool oasis retreat to relax and think about your next move, entertain, write, cruise the net for ideas etc. Add power, wifi, maybe a mister zone for instant cool downs, pavers, of course shade plants. So exciting!! I would like to see landscaping a new land with a practical mindset. Like everything you plant has a specific purpose and all works together, edible, etc.

How exciting! Yes I would put an orchard over there by your neighbor's property line. They'll kind of double as privacy trees. I would get rid of that mystery shed, if it was against the wall that'd be one thing but it's in a prime spot in the garden with the limited shade. I'd put a chicken coup back there in the shade and maybe a small Japanese style pond (as well as shade friendly plants of course). I'd be really tempted to knock out that fence leading into the back yard area and make my own with an arbor/trellis entryway (something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2Grqp6mocaBgrM ) supporting either climbing roses or a trellis based vegetable. Also a veggie tunnel trellis like Mark from Self Sufficient Me has is a must imo. Good luck and congrats! This is going to be fun to watch!!

I agree with knocking down that shed, it is impractical in every way for what you need. I would build a larger shed in the corner with shade, to be your indoor seeding area and so on. Great buy ,and I look forward to the future content. Onward and upward!

I am amazed that he is allowed to convert his entire front yard into a garden, here in Quebec you are not allowed ! And chicken coops are not allowed everywhere. I guess that is why USA is the best ? :-P

@@melodiepoulin207 In Edmonton here we can have both front yard gardens and chickens, though it is pretty recent that bylaws changed. Citizens brought it to city council, they did some studies, did some trial runs, and now we have both! There's hope you can do this too in Quebec if we can do it here!

Awesome... congrats on the new place! Can’t wait to watch it evolve! Shed: perfect little greenhouse! Just replace the walls/roof with plastic! That would leave room for a shade garden behind it... but it wouldn’t look out of place anymore. But chickens would be cool too... then you could use the shady space for their run. As for what would be cool to see: a food forrest of sorts with fruit trees and bushes, perennial edibles etc!

Move the shed to the shade spot if possible. Use it for seedlings, microgreens or chickens. Alternatively put a glass roof on and make it higher also add more windows to make an inprov greenhouse.

I think that using the shadier area of your property to house chickens is a wise use of it. Chickens don't tolerate really high heat too well (100 and over) - especially the larger ones. Ours hide out in the deep shade on really hot days and we put out misters on hoses to keep them cooler.
