So cool to see more people in Canada getting aboard the Bongo Friendee train. Yours looks almost exactly like mine, you even seem to camp in similar areas judging by the landscape. Word of advice, get a low coolant alarm and a "Rusty's self bleeding kit" to make sure that beautiful machine never overheats and dies on you. Consider it insurance. We put on all terrain tires, took the rear most seat out, added a kitchen pod with tiny sink + removable single burner. Compressor cooler & solar panel to extend the battery life (separate the battery for the engine & accessories, don't combine them so you can run one down and still start the engine)... but the biggest difference was adding the diesel parking heater because we can camp all year and be toasty warm. Congratulations on the purchase, happy Bongo'ing and hope see you out there one day. VW Westphalia people will love you too. We call mine the Eastfalia :)
@jennalexisko2 ай бұрын
Thankyou for this! Would it be just as effective if I manually check the coolant levels often? I’ve heard of people installing these alarms! Also would love to know what your diesel heater setup is! I’m planning on installing one as well :)
@UserNamedNone2 ай бұрын
@@jennalexisko I think the alarm is worth it yes, but whatever helps you sleep at night. My diesel heater is 2kw and is under the passenger seat. It uses a mount made by Dave Westguard who's available on facebook, but ebay also sells them. I routed my vent to the back of the center console instead of the footwell and I love it there. When you flip the seats back you will find a hatch with 10 or 12 bolts that leads into the engine bay. I made the hose hole in that hatch and routed the heat pipe through. It blows onto the middle row of seats with a nozzle you can adjust. I tapped into the fuel lines just after the fuel filter using a brass T piece. The thermostat is above the seat belt on the passenger side pillar by the door. Just going camping as we speak, maybe I'll send you a video later this weekend showing how I installed it. Happy trails!

Hi Jenna, thank you for sharing this video of your bongo, i came across this via one of the few facebook bongo groups i am with as i have exactly the same bongo, same year, same spec etc and for a 27yo old vehicle the japanese technology was streets ahead of everyone else, electric windows, electric roof, electric blinds etc and even soft close side door, the bongo is a fabulous vehicle. I am from the UK and although we can wild camp in places, nothing like what your video shows just absolutely stunning and a fab pitch, look forward to more bongo adventures :-)

Excellent choice - always good to hear about new Bongonauts! I bought mine (Bertie the Bongo 😊) a few months ago and love it to bits: 2005 petrol, 4WD, automatic gearbox, sink, gas hob and fridge, pop top (unfortunately not the electric one like yours). It's a dream to drive. I'm just about to get a diesel heater fitted so I can sleep comfortably in it in the winter. There are some very friendly and helpful Facebook groups if you need help or have questions about anything Bongo-related. I hope you enjoy many adventures together.

@@jennalexisko mine will be in the boot, boxed in. It's there because I also need a 5l fuel tank, but because your bongo is diesel you have much more flexibility where to put it. Under the passenger seat seems to be very common. I imagine heating is essential with your Canadian winters!

Nice camper van. Only problem is the right hand drive. But in Canada where there aren't a lot of cars, it should be ok. Be careful about storing food inside the van since bears are probably everywhere in Canada. Definitely slope the canopy away from the van in rainy weather. Nice to have 4 wheel drive to reach those more remote campsites. Definitely do not leave the sleeping top exposed to sunlight, especially stronger mid-day sunlight, which will eventually destroy the plastic. Thanks for the outdoor fix to relieve the city life.

When I was in my 20's I too drove an old car. For long trips, I always traveled with a small tool box and did an inspection of the things I thought could go wrong (broken belts, leaks). The second thing I did was find sources of parts like hoses, and belts, relays, alternator diode, radiator, brake pads, seals, shocks, just to get an idea of where I could get parts, if I needed them. I'd order and switch out parts before they failed so as to not get stuck on the road. For a vehicle designed to run in Japan, and rarely seen in shops here, I think would be a good thing to do. You could build a spreadsheet and order on-line if needed.
