I had a DR 650 (the same bike twice actually) about 20 years ago. Fortunately, your bike is exactly the same as mine aside from the color. They have been around a long time and there’s a mountain of aftermarket parts for it. A basic, trouble free, reliable bike. It also has a relatively low seat height compared to more modern adventure bikes. You’ll should enjoy the torque.

Ah great stuff, it’s already putting a smile on my face 😬 From your experience are there any areas I should look to upskill myself for maintenance or repairs etc? I am no mechanic but feel like a few choice skills would be good, especially diagnostic type skills

@@lightweightadv to be honest, a good friend owned the Suzuki dealership so I had them do the maintenance. They are very simple and I’m not aware of any glaring shortcomings. I did replace the stock seat, since it’s a plank, but I think I used the Suzuki “comfort” one that wasn’t really. The Aussies swear by them, so you’ll find lots of material on their forums.

I think you will fall in love with the DR. Old school -- all you need. Massive community and following here in the US. Keep it forever, wherever you go. It will last you a lifetime and they probably won't be around much longer because of tightening regs. I have a DR200S - more appropriate for my age - as in old - and ability. It's the favorite of the 4 motorcycles in my garage (CT90, CRF250L, 650INT).

Hi, I think I might have already fallen in love with it and I’ve only taken it out once 😂 That’s great to know though, if you have any recommendations for online forums and sites I can join/look at that would be great 👍 Yep, I already think this machine will be with me for a loooong time 😎 time to make her mine!

Very good choice! I've had my DR for 3 years now (US import to the UK). All right, it's old school, but built to last (to the apocalypse and beyond) and such a brilliant engine, very torquey and will climb anything. I hope you love yours as much as I do mine. Maybe consider a suspension upgrade before too long though - at least the forks, they're very soft.

Hey Paul, that’s good knowledge, thanks 🙏 feel free to share any tips/advice buddy I really appreciate it. Gotta say, I already really like the bike and have developed a bond with it in some way, I think it could well be the nostalgic feeling that it conjures up 🤔🤷🏻♂️ either way I love it 😎

@@lightweightadv I put plex valves from FFRC in Oz in my forks. Not too pricey and very easy to fit, just drop them into the fork tubes below the springs - massive improvement. The bike doesn't dive when braking with the front and is more stable off road too. There are other cartridge emulators you can get too though. Secondly, the Cross Training Enduro youtube channel has a bunch of really useful content about the DR, the one titled "DR650 project: common mods, issues and solutions" would be very good to start with - required watching for a new DR owner!

I think We all took for granted Bikes that last year's and year's and all We had to do was service them every 6 thousand miles give or take and then the modern 4 strokes came with power to weight ratios that tickled us in the right places BUT the maintenance and short service life of major parts and lack of long term reliability sickened us . This is My theory on the CRF300l being so popular even though it needs thousands spent on suspension out the box it's like a old style trail bike where it can stay on the road all day, do some dirt and then be rode to work Monday morning giving amazing fuel consumption

Ok so, let me just start by saying, in the US, you can find everything that you showed and more under one roof. Secondly, due to your limited selection, you are extremely lucky that they just happened to have one of the greatest dual sports of all time, not only that, it’s in my favorite color! Lastly, I have to say this as well, since you toyed around with the idea, You haven’t ridden dunes, until you have ridden dunes on a race quad with paddle tires! I’ve had every kind of bike you can imagine. As an old man, I tootle around on my dual sport these days. I raced MX, raced crotch rockets in the quarter mile, and I even raced my quad (1986 Honda TRX250R) on MX tracks. But the most fun I’ve ever had on a machine, the one thing that left a permanent smile on my face was when I would get to slap the paddles on the race quad and spend all day in the dunes on the back wheels. There simply isn’t anything like it. Excellent choice of a dual sport though. Absolutely stunning machine!

Ah thanks mate, yeah really pleased with the bike and can’t wait to get out on some adventures. Gotta agree, the colour white suites this bike so well. The Quad idea certainly sounds appealing, maybe that’s a thing I get lined up too, I’m sure there are plenty of places I can hire one to play on 😎

Hey buddy, we’re obviously big advocates of the CRF and before I came out it was certainly up there in my list. It would seem however, it’s not as popular out here and therefore not on the list. They have the motorcross CRFs available but apps not the L. That said, I think I fancied something different for a change anyway and this thing certainly puts a smile on my face 😁
