I bought a Porsche 912 survivor car (PART 1)

I've wanted a short wheel base car for quite a while. This was a one owner car and has been parked since 1980. The car is almost twice my age, and I'll (hopefully) be the first one to drive it after sitting 42 years. When I saw the car in person I was surprised at how dry it was. Extremely dry, undercoating looked great, and the doors, lids, all operated perfectly. Gaps on the car looked perfect as well. Overall it appeared to be very original, with original paint. It's not a perfect car, but I don't need or want a perfect one. I can enjoy this car and not stress over perfect paint.
Since purchasing the car, I've been going through the all the mechanical systems on the car. The plan is to refresh and restore the mechanical components of the car, while leaving the car as original as possible.
I have some faster cars, so I'm happy to keep this car very original and plan to use it in a little bit of a different way than my other cars. I'm obsessed with these air-cooled Porsches. A couple friends couldn't understand why I'd buy a 4 cylinder porsche when I have a 6 cylinder. They just don't understand.
I hope you enjoyed watching the video. Like, share subscribe if did :)

I stumbled upon one of the later videos of your 912. Peaked my interest and searched your channel. Saw a nice chronicle of your restoration and I'm on the throws of binge watching all of your videos. I liked your style/methodology of your initial video and subscribed to watch the remainder. I'm not a Porsche owner, never been but I started our on euro cars in my youth (69 MG Midget and 74 Fiat X1/9). I went through my JDM phase for a many years and have returned back to euros. I've recently been captured (last 2 years) by late 60's, early 70's VW Beetles hence why your 68 Porsche 912 caught my eye. I've owned a 08 Audi A5 V6 for the last 8 years and a twin turbo'd 08 Audi V8 R8 for the last 5 years. And the binge watch begins .... 😊

Once you get this puppy up to speed, it’ll be super fun. Bought a new 1967-912 in November 1966. It was perfectly balanced and was a joy to drive. Cost new $4985, had a 5 speed (just a choice no extra charge), no seat belts. I paid $50 for a radio upgrade to a Blaupunk ‘Mexican AM/FM/SW.’

@@michaelgideon6422 No. Had that car in some rather shady areas while I had it in the 60s; it was stolen from a Shopping Mall parking lot in ‘71. Insurance gave me $3K. Only items that could be easily adapted to a dune buggy were taken-my extra option radio was spared.

I put seat belts in car a few weeks after purchase. I bought car in 66 believe (not sure) that was swan year for no seat belts. Bought car in Philadelphia which was port of entry for Porsche cars.

One last comment. As I remember the 912 is equally balanced on its four tires for a driver of around 158 pounds. I was perfectly matched then(can’t say that for today sadly).

I also have a '68 and I'd say you did well! Your interior looks a lot better than mine did when I bought mine. It also looks original (to me). You never will lose money on it. Even after you give the paint some love I bet you'll increase the value by $3K!!! She looks really nice - please post more videos and show your progress!! The aircooled cars are going out of sight in value! P.S. It looks like you have a Talbot mirror which was an option and more aerodynamic than the stock Durant mirrors.

Michael, watching you unbox this time capsule was such a treat, especially the baggies with the badging pieces('911' and the P O R S C H E letters). My '67 911 had the same rear view Talbot mirror but mine had two, one on each fender. The outer door skin was never drilled thru but the the inner panel had the access holes pre-stamped. Glad to see its found a new steward that will love and care for it.

There should be NO regrets in the purchase. It looks original and most all the parts are "there". 34,000 odo miles? I doubt it! Perhaps 134k or 234k miles, however these engines are very reliable when overhauled/rebuilt and easy to repair. I understand the apprehension, but this makes better sense than keeping US$ in the bank. Classic cars will always appreciate throughout the years. Sure there is rust in almost all older cars, but no matter what, it can be addressed and body panels are available. Your compensation will be rewarded by the journey in the fix, repair, maintenance and ride with final appreciation/accomplishment of a great build. Duffy, the name as embossed on the glasses case will change to your name. Eventually in your lifetime some lucky person will inherit or purchase your 912. The name on the glasses case will change to the new owner. Enjoy her while you can. Wishing you a happy journey!!! Congratulations!!! A+

@@FunWithAJ Yea, a lot has changed in 35 year. Most cheap motorcycles sell for 5-10k these days. A hand made 54 year old porsche is far more valuable than a civic or a cheap plastic motorcycle. I won't say what I paid, but I'll say it was more than I wanted to pay :)
