To do a landing..... First keep aircraft aligned with runway... Almost 10 km before in a straight line.....also you should be at about 2k feet.... And then use flaps and slow down aircraft at 140knots .... Then land the aircraft.... Note back landing gear should touch first....

Flaps don't affect the speed in much aspects, but they are basically used to provide the direction and the pitch (nose up or down) of the aircraft

Flaps DO AFFECT speed directly. They help decreasing the speed and help aircraft fly at lower speeds safely, they produce drag which helps the aircraft slow down. Direction is controlled by Ailerons and Rudders. Pitch is controlled by Horizontal stabilisers
