Simon I'm not saying spend a fortune but you need a decent bat the one you've got sounds awful and cheap, there are plenty of custom made bats you can buy from multiple companies like thorntons or butterfly £100 would get you a decent one get an allround blade and medium hard rubbers with 1.7-1.9mm
