I have a similar diary that was my grandmother’s. It’s from later in the decade (mainly 1957-58) and it’s nice and all, but it’s weird to read about her and my grandfather making out and being in love. I liked her entry on when he proposed though. She sounded so happy.

One thing I would note from this also is within 5 months, she owns a radio, has had multiple pairs of glasses, has went into town multiple times, her family has the money for fabric & has made her clothes, plays with dolls, rides horses… during this time she would definitely be considered upper middle class. My grandmother was born in the ‘40’s and made dolls from corn husks! Their house had holes in the floor and they didn’t radio. They were definitely considered “poor”

Man why was I similar to a girl from 1950s in my primary school? I started writing this diary in 3rd grade and when I had exams going on I simply wrote "Today was my _____ exam I hope I'll get good marks" or something similar I don't remember correctly. AND IT WAS THE SAME SENTENCE ON ALL THE DATES.

I noticed that too about going to school on New Year's Eve. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and we never went to school during the time just before Christmas and shortly after the new year began. Maybe this was before there was a standardized schedule or maybe the diary keeper went to a religious school that had its own yearly schedule?

I hope someone out there has found my diaries from the past and kept them. I put so much in there and memories from people who have since died. Unfortunately I had an abusive ex who had my diaries - it breaks my heart that I had to leave them behind. If you come across a diary found in Canada that is either velvet cover with a purple leather flower snap, or a purple diary with a reptile-type texture on it, please buy them. I think they are good reads, and I wrote them assuming that one day other people would read them and it would be published. It breaks my heart that they are probably rotting in a dump somewhere.

In Truman Capote's non-fiction book "In Cold Blood" about the murder of four members of the Clutter family in Kansas in 1959 there was a five-year diary. Nancy Clutter, a high school senior when she and her brother and parents were murdered in their home, kept a diary in a five-year book. What Nancy wrote the very night of her death helped clear her boyfriend as a suspect. She wrote about how her boyfriend had been visiting with the family that evening and what time he left. Had Nancy's boyfriend stayed later perhaps he would have been killed also.---Something I've noticed in all your diary videos, Joanna, is that people don't write their names or the dates in the front of their diaries. In the front of my own diaries I write my name, what number of diary it is and the dates on which I start and finish.---I've heard that fabric softener sheets between the pages helps remove the musty smell but the best thing might be to let the books sit open in the sunlight and fresh air, allowing them to dry out and air out.

In my old diary everytime i wrote na entry I'd write the date, what day of the week it was and the time i was writing it /like 23 nov 2010 tuesday 10:42 or something/ but then in my next diary i thought this was wayy to complicated and all so i left out the date and everything. Now when I read it back i'm disappointed i didnt write the date so in later entries I do write it, but not every time.

I have a diary which is of grandmother 's grandfather. My grandma's grandfather passed that diary to her and she passed it me. It is of 1947. The handwriting is very hard to read. My grandma and grandpa told that they will pass us their diary.
