Good luck on your journey. Even as a Swede I wouldn’t dare moving all the way up north. Just an advice if regarding the windows. You might be able to just renovate them and put low-emission glas in the inner window, it would save you a lot of money if you do it yourself, money better spent on a good heating system. Regards,

People up north love to help and do understand they are not very talkative. If you ask and are friendly they are going to go thru fire to help you. Just came across this video and saw you talking about the "slimy spiderweb" on the walls. That's actually fungi, so you should definately remove it (WITH CARE, so you don't spread the spores into other areas). Just a heads up from somebody who's worked with this kind of stuff :)
@iamblorbie9 ай бұрын
also adding about the water damage in the living room.. Prepare for it to be a much bigger project than you make it sound like, you're likely gonna have to remove the whole floor and possibly other rooms aswell. The leak can definately spread in the flooring further than you'd expect, so depending on the severity of the leak it's definately possible.

In anyway.. this house.. there seems to be other houses there to.. we call this a "By" = village.. in anycase there seems to be others still living there! Soo a "by"= village close to Kalix, what can go wrong.. well everything or nothing.. its not that different to other european countries/Swiss.. if one have experience of living in the Alps/countryside! You gonna get a job directly.. as a nurse.. my concern is your spouse!

You hit the hammer right on the nail there! I was offered a job one year before we moved up here ( the job offer made it all possible ). And yes entire Norrbotten is short staffed on (xray)nurses, doctors you name it. The hospital actually had me go to Germany Earlier this year to try to recruit nurses and radiologist from there. And some are actually moving up so that’s great :) We do live in a little town 10 mins from kalix and we have neighbors living there year around and others that just have vacation houses here. The house is A LOT. Living in a construction site is quite the struggle sometimes. We cannot wait to have an actual kitchen and a living room again 😅. It took the Migrationsverket 8 months to hand out a Work permit for Derrick and it took about a month or two after that for him to find a job. but he did find something for now. We do intend to open our own business soon so we have a bit more steady income. i’ll reveal more about that soon 👌😊

Hi guys, when isolating the floor, we had to uplift it (due to the thick isolation layer) and we lost a considerable amount of height. There was still plenty of space but the problem was that the positioning of the windows was rather awkward afterwards. We solved this by renovating the outside walls and by installing new (horizontal) windows, but renovating always has some surprises in store. Keep it up, you'll get there.
@Projectsweden5 ай бұрын
Hi Petra Derrick here… we have renovated part of the floor and I lowered it quite a bit to accommodate the insulation and we will be installing floor heating so in total we will lose around 26 mil 2.6cm not a huge loss but I feel your pain..

You must have quite a good lifestyle in Switzerland. The house you bought was not abandoned, it belonged to someone as their Summer House. That is very common and usually we are happy to live a very simple lifestyle in the summer. I have many friends who have houses and fittings just like the house here, it needs a few repairs and a lot of cleaning. Of course it is not built for the winter and if it is a home you would insulate all the walls. The empty house next to where we live has just done this, it took about 3 weeks. Out toilet looks like yours and works quite well.. I cannot believe you bought a house before discovering the huge cost of living in Sweden first! Those repairs will cost a lot unless you do it all yourself. Consider yourself very very fortunate to be offered a job. Several of our friends who are Swedish have 'children' who have university degrees and have been unable to find permanent jobs, just waitress and children's minders after school. Well good luck. We have German, French, Dutch, Danish and Norwegian neighbours in our village of a few hundred people. - except the Norwegians and the Germans have left after struggling a few years to build their dream. The Danish family only come to hunt! The French family work harder than anyone and have built up their own organic farm and import luxury French foods. They are fluent in Swedish, like 'natives'!

@Vinterfrid10 ай бұрын
You are most certainly wrong about the house if you mean it has always been a summer house - I am 99.9 % sure it once was built as a permanent home and not a summer house. Many of those countryside houses were transformed into summer houses since the owners moved to a bigger city for work reasons; cities fairly far away from these houses. No owner would have installed expensive heating systems in a summer house. Those houses were definitely built for harsh winters - with insulated walls etc. I have no idea who gave you the idea they were not.

I think despite cosmetic appearances, you have yourselves a little gem of a house... if you dare, try thinking about renovating kitchen bathroom and one other room to both live and sleep in... to start. Until you have lived all four seasons in Sweden at least once, you won't make sense of why they built their houses the way the did... - and what the little outhouses are for.. they're not just wood sheds with a bedroom for the gardener! Insulation, but maybe you don't have to replace windows... just renovate them during the summer and put a layer of smart glass on them... You're so brave, you deserve all the luck in the world with this place

Hallo Maikes! 🇸🇪❄️😊

Complete renovation you say? Outer panel looks ok from a glance but if you are going to add extra insulation, rip it all out, add say 45mm extra insulation and redo the paneling before you install your new windows.

@Projectsweden3 ай бұрын
Find a house and make a bank transfer.. i an an EU citizen which gives Derrick and I the right to live here. For an American that wants to move to Sweden you would have to go through the motions with the Swedish embassy in the USA . We found the house on a website called Hemnet.

How did you find a 100-year-old house in Sweden? On which river do you drive your boat? It looks very beautiful.
@Projectsweden10 ай бұрын
Hi! It is the Kalix river. It goes all the way from kebnekaise ( the highest mountain in Sweden) to the gulf of bothnia :) You can find Swedish houses on Hemnet

When you are renovating PLEASE watch out if you plan to do the insolation by yourselfs, many of these old houses have a ton of aspestos if they have not done any reno there might be aspestos in the walls and cealing.
@Projectsweden10 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your concern. Derrick owned his own renovation company in Texas before he moved to Europe, so luckily he’s dealt with asbestos many times before. We know how to recognize it and we’ll deal with it professionally :) luckily there’s not much asbestos in our house :)
