I used to work at Gamestop and not only is there a limit of $200 worth of gift cards, but if an employee allows the purchase anyway then the register itself would actually shut down for an hour. the $250 limit is to comply with banking regulations. if any company lets you hold more than $300 at once in an account, the us considers that to be a bank and requires the company to hold a banking license. it’s why that limit is basically on most digital game stores

I'd also hope for him making an emulation site for all this, doubt he will because he's got a good heart... even if it isn't illegal and technically not pirating. By definition pirating is the stealing of products then reselling them or as a consumer buying the stolen products you can be charged with piracy. Emulation sites don't make money outside of ads or donations, you aren't buying games from them, therefore no one is pirating, thus why Emuparadise back in 2015 could only be slapped with a copyright claim and even that is arguable. MIND YOU I AM NO LAWYER, just basic knowledge and... again the literal definition of piracy you look up on google that's what it says.

@SolstaceWinters
@SolstaceWinters Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are referring to. After a few days, whatever context you are referring to is kind of lost. But based on the comments you have, I'm assuming it has something to do with pirating? My brother and I added the Homebrew channel to our 3DSs. I don't like the idea, but I'd rather have it as an option if I need it for patches or DLC I can't obtain now, maybe games that were only digital downloads now. That said, I'm an old-school gamer manchild and I like having the actual games themselves, so I'd still hunt them if I can find them. For me, Homebrew is only there as a last resort. I wish I could do something like this, but maybe just for the games I'm actually interested in, money being no object. And I do agree, his cause is way more "noble" (if that's the right word for it) than my own. I do think there's an awful lot of shovelware on those systems that we could probably not need to save, but then I guess equally "who gets to decide what is shovelware?"
@GIR177
@GIR177 Жыл бұрын
@@meisterwu8922 He already said why - the games were donated to the Video Game History Foundation. It's worth explaining since people seem to be too shortsighted to grasp what the hell that means. The foundation's plan is to publish their archived games, IF the law gets updated so that video game preservation is taken more seriously and old media becomes public domain. Let's say in 10-20 years, a developer wants to play an obscure but unsuccessful indie title that is no longer sold, but had some neat ideas they'd like to study and improve on. The foundation would be able to provide that historian with a legal way to access and play these games (either by remote play, digital copy, or actually visiting the facility), similar to how a library lends out books. They are playing the long game and while it's not a 100% foolproof plan, it's still the best course of action that doesn't involve illegal activity. Even the pirates still appreciate having more legitimate backups around, so that's not even a strong riposte. It's also just silly to see people whining about how Jirard chooses to spend his money. $22K wasn't exactly going to build an orphanage.

@@PhilipMarcYT Absolutely - a public forum with every single one of these games would be ideal, as games are meant to be played, and Nintendo clearly didn't want money off these games anymore. But 1) they can't, as a group not exactly anonymous, distribute these games in an emulation format. They would be open to a lawsuit by Nintendo - a famously litigious company - and 2) given the limited time, isn't it an inherently good thing that they essentially got these games on a lifeboat, so to speak? honestly the ecology cant handle that. the alexandria library was a couple of rooms and contained most of the existing material. soon we will have people going "every a.i. created art piece is unique and needs to be preserved". humanity will need an ever growing trillions of terabytes to "preserve" all sorts of really marginal things, which of course takes tons of hd materials, server power, internet bandwith etc. and then indeed we have people doing it separately for the same things for "backup purposes" so i certainly hope it wont become legally required. i game and collect some but when he said he bought 866 wii u games i was just thinking "over 600 of those are absolute showelware, why would anyone care those" humanity needs to learn to let some things go. museums are supposed to give out the general idea of the said era with a set of objects and some others acknowledged through pictures. if we hoard everything from the past then we will just end up destroying the actual world

That collection in the end represents, countless hours, years even, of effort on the part of passionate developers that love their craft and this artform. +okani Exactly right. Which is why I wanted to do this legally rather than bootleg things. A lot of people put their hearts & souls behind these games in a time where Nintendo was in its biggest crunch period competitively. Nintendo's fighting Apple & Google in the Smartphone Revolution. And Nintendo's fighting Sony & Microsoft in the ongoing Console Wars. Nintendo fought for the 3DS to succeed at all costs & Wii U as great as it was just couldn't carry its weight. So for these indie or 3rd party developers who stood by Nintendo in this time, I wanted to reward them as much as possible for maintaining a presence on the platforms run by the last TRUE gamemaker. I say last TRUE gamemaker because Nintendo has no ulterior motives for why they're in this business. They're simply here to make & sell games for us to play in its purest form. Seal of Quality still matters. If we want that ethos to survive, we must support the company who embodies that ethos. Those who help that company should be rewarded for keeping gaming 'GAMING'. No gacha, no ads, no FMV cinematic movies posing as games...but ACTUAL Gameplay as the focus first. But consoles suck at game preservation so we need The Completionist to aid in keeping this media alive. Jirard & his team did a good thing even though Nintendo's jankiness made it a struggle. Hahaha!

I don’t understand the foundation. What’s the point in them archiving everything if they’re never letting anyone else access it? Imo, hshop has done a much better job at preservation in that they have everything from every country and they let people access it rather than just keeping it themselves, at that point it’s just a personal collection. Nintendo also have a copy of absolutely everything, so if that’s what preservation is, then nintendo are already doing it themselves and it’s pointless.

My biggest question is how they didn't know about any of the Eshops restrictions beforehand. Did they seriously not look into the online stores rules before they decided to buy thousands of eShop cards? Just a very confusing video, you think it'd been planned out a lot less sloppy.

@@dogg-paws Yeah, Square lost nearly everything in the PS2 era. It's why the classic PS1 Final Fantasy games remasters look so blurry. They don't have access to the original assets now, so they can't properly upscale them. It's why Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 had to be completely remade for the HD collections too. It's baffling how Square lost so many of their iconic games, it's still affecting us today. FFX somehow looks so much worse than it originally did. It's sad that they didn't care about saving their games until it was too late

@@cyber_xiii3786 every single one of these games has long since been dumped and is available online, so already this work is nullified. beyond that though, theres no way in hell this creator would dare dump any of the games, let alone make them available to others. so what, every 3ds/wiiu game ever is available on those specific consoles? what if they break? all this is is a big publicity stunt and an excuse to give (read: reward) nintendo with tens of thousands of dollars they do not deserve and they can use to justify closing more digital storefronts in the future.

@@breadone_ I wholeheartedly disagree that Jirard and Co intended to reward Nintendo for (completely unnecessarily) shutting down services. I also doubt that EVERY single piece of software on those storefronts were already dumped somewhere before. But I do agree that Nintendo is a shitass company that's drunk with power and doesn't deserve the fortune it gets. Especially considering how horribly it treats its fanbase/customers and how overpriced they make everything. I really like The Completionist and think they had honorable goals in mind but... yeah. This might've been a wasted effort. Also screw Nintendo.

Jirard had already earned my highest level of respect I can afford giving to a stranger, back when he did the whole new game plus ordeal with the completionist show. The, honestly speaking, unhealthy stubbornness and great morals that drives this man to fight for his passion for videogames, though I would be surprised if it doesn't extend beyond that, is one of the most wholesome things I've ever seen from an influencer. I do wish for him to be able to find some peace of mind for himself someday, because damn, does he often seem stressed with how hard he pushes himself..

This seems like something most people won’t realise quite how huge a deal it is for maybe decades, because it is that astonishing an achievment. The preservation of creative works is important whatever the medium, from film to music to art and of course video games. Thankfully we live in an age where media can be preserved, but even with the technology we have it takes tremendous will and dedication. So congratulations to Jirard and the rest of the team, and I hope you work here will be recognised. And if not? Well it doesn’t matter, because either way this is monumental for the history and preservation of video games. ♥

This is what it means to truly have a passion for something. To say "I don't have the money to afford to make this happen, but i will find a way anyway," that is truly the inspiration here. Having a passion and a love not only for the games themselves, but the incredible people, some of whom are already lost to time.
